Check Out a New “MPC DJ Mix” From Clark

Though the Berlin-based producer has lately traversed the realms of club-friendly production on albums like Turning Dragon and Totem’s Flare, Clark recently surprised his fans with a DJ set of relatively straightforward dance tunes, which premiered on Tom Ravenscroft’s show on BBC 6 Music just last week. And now, the mixmaster has uploaded the excellent mix on to Soundcloud for us to stream and download for free. Clark calls his Phrenic Mix an “MPC DJ mix,” as most of the material is made up of edited and remixed versions crafted by the artist (some original and unheard Clark productions are in there, too). On his selections, Clark says, “A lot of [this] material is so deliciously stripped that it proved ripe to be embellished with the analogue machine-funk I was riffing out in the studio at the time.” You can check out the mix and its tracklist below, along with some upcoming tour dates.

Buck 65 Announces New Album

The avant hip-hopper Buck 65 has been honing his craft for quite a long time now, the better part of the last 20 years in fact, hence the title of his newest LP, 20 Odd Years. Buck 65’s first LP since 2007 finds the rapper/producer exploring territory more similar to his 2003 album, Talkin’ Honky Blues, where he began crafting songs that somehow combined the disparate worlds of hip-hop, blues, country, folk, and indie rock. The new LP includes tracks from three digital mini-albums Buck 65 had released throughout 2010 under the names 20 Odd Years: Vol. 1 – Avant, Vol. 2 – Distance, and Vol. 3 – Albuquerque, and adds four unreleased tracks to the mix. 20 Odd Years, which features a host of diverse collaborators from New York’s multi-instrumentalist Emily Wells to singer/songwriter/poet Gord Downie (of The Tragically Hip), is set to be released on February 1. You can check the album artwork, tracklist, and a stream of “Sore” from Talkin’ Honky Blues below.

Carl Craig “The Climax Bootleg”

As if the legendary Detroit techno producer didn’t have enough on his plate between releasing a 20-year retrospective and planning a world tour for his Planet E label (which you can read all about here), Carl Craig recently got hipped to the fact that his track “The Climax,” which he had released under his Paperclip People moniker back in 1995, had been used in a mash-up for an anonymous bootleg vinyl pressing. Well, Craig decided to respond to the bootleg by taking the available audio and making his own re-edit of the track, which is what we’ve got available for you here. And re-edit he did, cutting, looping, and manipulating the audio into a seven-plus minute excursion into the cold, intricate Detroit techno Craig’s been masterfully producing for years. (via Juno)

Watch an Exclusive Interview With Switch

The good people over at Scion A/V passed along this interview with producer and frequent MIA and Diplo collaborator Switch, in which you’ll find him discussing his musical roots, how he got hooked up with MIA, and a decent amount of bleeped-out cursing. Enjoy.

Labtekwon “Faraway Land”

From the latest album by Baltimore producer/MC Labtekwon, Next: Baltimore Basquiat and the Future Shock, comes this sample-based bit of clattering beat work. “Faraway Land” boasts some of the grimiest rhythms from the dustiest source material heard this side of a FlyLo production; the distorted booms of vinyl-ripped kicks bounce in tandem with click-clacking percussion sounds while the lyricist delivers calm and collected flows about… Well, we can’t say for sure what Labtekwon is rapping about (we could guess it has something to do with foreign countries), but it’s no matter—it all sounds quite good to us. And you can check a video for “Elevation,” a much smoother track from the same Labtekwon album, after the jump.

Detroit Legend Rick Wilhite to Release Debut LP

Although that headline above may seem hard to believe , it’s now been confirmed that Detroit deep-house veteran Rick Wilhite (who also operates under the aliases The Godson, DOC, Tech-12, and Working Mixx) will be releasing his debut LP, Analog Aquarium, on Chicago’s Still Music imprint March 21. Not to say that Wilhite hasn’t been putting out music for the last 20 years; he has a host of singles, remixes, and collaborations (including working with Theo Parrish, Kenny Dixon Jr., and Malik Pittman on the 3 Chairs project) to his name and well over a decade of experience DJing around the world. Throw on top of that his time spent at Detroit’s legendary Buy-Rite Records shop and his current role as the owner and operator of the Vibes New and Rare Music record store, and his dance music resume surely stands up to the best. Now, Wilhite has decided to spread his work to a wider audience and has put together an LP of 10 original tracks (featuring collaborations with Theo Parrish, Osunlade, Billy Love, and Malik Pittman) which are said to see the producer exploring “all sides of his musical abilities with the assistance of some of his most trusted allies.” You can check the artwork, tracklist, and a stream for one of Wilhite’s more classic tracks from his 1997 Godson EP.

Stones Throw’s Anika to Play Select DJ Dates and Tour US

One of Stones Throw’s newest artists, the UK-based Anika, has been making waves recently since releasing her Geoff Barrow-produced self-titled debut LP last December (which you can read a bit about in our Iconic Soundfeature with Portishead/Beak>’s Barrow) but has yet to make an appearance state-side, until now. News has come down our way that Anika will be making a handful of DJ appearances with dates in New York and LA throughout the month of February, spinning alongside the likes of Peanut Butter Wolf, Cubic Zirconia, Machinedrum, and Veronica Vasicka (who’s responsible for curating Stones Throw’s excellent Minimal Wave Tapes). We’ve also found out that Anika has plans to bring her full band (featuring members of Beak>) to the US later this spring, but no dates have come our way yet. Below, you can check out Anika’s planned DJ sets and watch a hectic video of her band’s rehearsal before a show in Paris.

Video: Tim Hecker “The Piano Drop”

This video was put together by some loving fans of producer Tim Hecker‘s particularly brutal aural assaults, but was apparently sanctioned by the artist and his people, since that’s who alerted us to its existence. Fittingly, the people responsible for the post paired a number from Hecker’s forthcoming Ravedeath 1972 album, “The Piano Drop,” with vintage, black-and-white footage of “The First MIT Baker House Piano Drop (1972).” As far as we can tell, that’s about all they did aside from a few slow fades, but seeing as how a simple photo from those same proceedings was used in the album art for Ravedeath 1972, we see no reason they should’ve embellished any further. And don’t forget to catch the release of Tim Hecker’s new full-length when it drops on Valentine’s Day.

Check Out a New Mix From XLR8R’s Shawn Reynaldo

Sound the conflict-of-interest alarm! Yes, our very own Managing Editor, Shawn Reynaldo, has crafted and delivered to us a brand-new mix of fresh, next-level club tunes. The recording was made not only to spread the word of the first anniversary celebration of the excellent Icee Hot party, which will feature the illustrious Kode9 as its headliner, but also to mark the death of Reynaldo’s 11-plus year-old DJ alias, Disco Shawn. In the 40-minute mix, the mixmaster (now known simply by his given name) delivers solid tunes from the likes of Royal T, Ghosts on Tape, Brenmar, Ciara, Nguzunguzu, S-X, fellow XLR8R staffer Contakt, and a whole lot of other club-friendly favorites. You can stream or download the whole mix, as well as check the full tracklist, below.

Stateless “Assassinations (FaltyDL Remix)”

UK-based avant-pop outfit Stateless (pictured above) is about to unveil its second album, Matilda, on March 1. As bands tend to do, a single is being circulated prior to the album release, and Stateless has settled on “Assassinations.” The group claims that the song sounds like “Timbaland producing Pink Floyd” (is that a good thing?), and producers Om Unit and FaltyDL have been commissioned to remix the track. We’ve got our hands on the latter effort, which finds NYC beatsmith Drew Lustman chopping, slicing, and looping frontman Chris James’ vocals and marrying those bits with swirling psychedelics, moody keys, and a melange of fractured beats. It’s not exactly dancefloor material, but FaltyDL has never been one to shy away from sonic experimentation.

The “Assassinations” single comes out on February 15.
