The Aikiu “Just Can’t Sleep (Azari & III Remix)”

A couple months ago, we shared an Egyptrixx remix of “Just Can’t Sleep,” by disco-loving Parisian outfit The Aikiu (which includes Pilooski as a member), and now we’ve got another tasty, housey rework for you, courtesy of Toronto’s Azari & III (pictured above). This soulful and deep revision of the tune precedes The Aikiu’s US debut at Abracadabra’s (record label) and Social Club’s (Paris party spot) joint CMJ showcase on Thursday, October 21, in New York. The Aikiu are joined by The Krays (a new project from Yuksek and Brodinski), Mustang, Mikix the Cat, and a solo set from Pilooski. You can check out all the details on the flier for the showcase, here.

Apparat “Sayulita”

Berlin’s Apparat is the latest producer/DJ to contribute a mix to the renowned DJ-Kicks series and “Sayulita” one of only three new tracks to make it on said mix. It’s perfectly fitting for “Sayulita” to have been named after the Mexican town where he’s recently been creating new material, as the track’s lush pads and deep bass evoke images of a warm Caribbean afternoon, a beaming sun engulfing the sands of a coastal beach. Underneath the layers of bliss, Apparat delicately places small clicky percussion and driving guitar chops to take the song through its simultaneously danceable and ambient course. We can’t wait to hear how Apparat lines up the song alongside selections from Joy Orbison, Oval, Pantha du Prince, Cosmin TRG, Thom Yorke, and others when his installment of DJ-Kicks is released on October 26. Aaron-Carl Remembered in Metro Times

Last week we sadly reported the passing of Detroit producer/DJ Aaron-Carl on our site. Today we’d like to share with you some nice words our own Walter Wasacz wrote about Aaron’s history and impact on electronic music in Detroit and beyond. You can read Walter’s piece in Detroit’s Metro Times about the man who “brought authentic humanity to a scene often overwhelmed, to its detriment, by cold-hearted technology” here.

Holy Fuck “Stay Lit (Bishop Morocco Remix)”

Tell us if we’ve lost control, but this remix of Holy Fuck‘s Latin cut “Stay Lit”—from fellow Canadian’s Bishop Morocco (pictured above)—speaks to our heart and soul. It’s obvious the duo loved Holy Fuck’s original version of the song, but sometimes love will make you tear things apart, which is exactly what they did to “Stay Lit.” Stripping down the bulk the live electronics and distorted crunch (in some sort of studio ceremony, no doubt), Bishop Morocco effectively brings the song closer to a Factory Records-esque post-punk sound. It kind of reminds us of that one band from Manchester. You know, the one with the depressed guy that killed himself decades ago? There were a couple of movies about it. They had that one song about love doing something or other. Hmm… Well, this song is cool, too.

Video: Roska and Untold Talk ‘Myth’ EP, Bass Music, Labels, and More

XLR8R Couldn't find the embed function for type: "ooyala" and source: "".

Roska and Untold are two DJs/producers that have long been points of interest for XLR8R, so news of their collaborative EP for the Numbers label was doubly exciting for us. Now that the Myth EP is out, the two bass-music icons were corralled by the Intruders online TV show for a quick interview. The two artists talked a bit about their new release, what exactly the music they make is called, running a record label, and plenty more. Watch the whole thing in the player above.

Caribou “Leave House (Motor City Drum Ensemble Remix)”

Motor City Drum Ensemble‘s remix of Caribou‘s “Leave House” hit the internet today to get us all ready for the upcoming digital release of Swim Remixes. Employing only a few obvious elements from the original, the German producer turns “Leave House” into a dark, eight-and-a-half minute house track. A constant percussive element pulses underneath the slow, arching progression of the song, occasionally graced by sparse appearances of Caribou’s original vocal. Swim Remixes also features re-works from Gold Panda, DJ Koze, and Nite Jewel, to name a few, and will be available October 26 in the UK and November 2 in the US. (via Pitchfork)

Podcast 164: Poirier

There’s not a lot more we can say about Montreal’s Poirier. Over the years, we’ve picked his brain for studio tips, let him show us around his hometown, documented his role in the lazer bass scene (side note: whatever happened to that?), and posted approximately 87 of his tracks in our downloads section. Plainly said, we like the guy, so now that we’re spending the month of October helping the Ninja Tune label celebrate its 20th anniversary, Poirier was an easy choice to kick off our series of special Ninja Tune podcasts. Pulling solely from the Ninja Tune and Big Dada vaults, he’s put together this Dubs for Ninjas mix that’s heavy on the bass and the dutty vibes. Give it a listen, and check back every Thursday in October for new Ninja Tune podcasts. Also, make sure to take a look at XLR8R’s Ninja Tune XX microsite for more exclusive content, Ninja Tune XX event info, and plenty of other celebratory goodies.
