Watch Tricky’s New Video for “Murder Weapon”

While we wait for the latest album from iconic DJ/producer Tricky, we can whet our appetites with this first video to come from Mixed Race, a boxing piece based around lead single “Murder Weapon.” Through some dark, Guy Ritchie-esque cinematography, we watch as Tricky dons the garb of a real contender, working his hardest to make it to the top. After a short dramatic break where Tricky gets in a bit of a tiff with some chap, a quick montage takes us through the last minute of “Weapon.” It seems more like a movie trailer than anything else. But hey, it’s Tricky, right?

Wira “Vloeitjes”

So apparently, a few dudes from Glasgow—who happen to be buds with the LuckyMe gang—got together to start a music blog, which, they say, “[is] built on a shared love for strange electronic music, new technologies, gadgets and Chris Morris.” A large number of well-regarded posts later, and the burgeoning music hub, called Phuturelabs, has decided to start a record label. For the first release, Phuturelabs is dropping a two-song offering from elusive UK producer Wira, one track of which we’ve got here. A-side tune “Vloeitjes” is a shuffling number full of undulating low-frequency, hollow percussion sounds, and a bounce uncharacteristic of such a moody piece of dance music. You can snag this production and its companion piece, “Playground,” in 320kpbs MP3 format from the Phuturelabs website on September 13.

Stream an Awesome Acid-House Mix From Optimo

Well, JD Twitch’s and JG Wilkes’ highly regarded and sorely missed Optimo party might be long gone, but that doesn’t mean their stellar mixes need to die, too. Just a couple of days ago, the fellas threw together a great collection of acid house for their Radio Magnetic podcast, and we just had to spread the good word. Over on Mixcloud, you can stream the 70-minute DJ set featuring 20 tracks born in dance-music hotbeds across the globe, all produced between 1987 and 2010. On the construction of the mix, the Optimo DJs say, “The mix was recorded using two turntables and a laptop in one take, with some minor editing after the fact.” You can listen to the Acid Eyeful mix below. Balam Acab “Regret Making Mistakes”

The first official record for both NY witch-house producer Balam Acab and the Tri Angle label, the See Birds EP is turning out to be quite the proverbial ‘feather in the cap’ for all parties involved—not to mention the burgeoning genre itself. We’ve already heard a few of 18-year-old Alec Koone’s tunes, and now we’re treated to another before his EP drops on August 16. “Regret Making Mistakes” shows Koone working diligently with a delayed Banjo loop, buzzing basslines, slow-stuttering beats, and a number of twinkling, atmospheric melodies, all wrapped around a haunting, operatic vocal sample. And despite the meticulous labor spent tweaking each found element, Acab’s production isn’t overwrought with flashy effects pleading for your attention—as a whole, the song sublimely commands it. Gonjasufi Remix Album to Feature Oneohtrix Point Never, Shlohmo, Mark Pritchard, and More

Though we haven’t exactly been championing the psychedelic vignettes and guttural vocal work featured on A Sufi and A Killer, we’d certainly say there’s much worthwhile listening on the mostly Gaslamp Killer-produced debut album by LA’s Gonjasufi. Now, about six months after that record’s release, a new album of remixes from respectable producers and musicians across the board is set to drop on October 5. Contributions come from fellow Warp artists Bibio, Broadcast & The Focus Group, and Mark Pritchard (a.k.a. Harmonic 313), as well as XLR8R favorites Oneohtrix Point Never, Shlohmo, and Jeremiah Jae. Check out the artwork and full tracklist for The Caliph’s Tea Party, and listen to Mark Pritchard’s remix of “Ancestors,” below. (via Resident Advisor)

Last Chance to Help Send Our Friends to the Gathering of the Juggalos!

Folks, our friend Brandon Ivers, the esteemed writer of so many awesome XLR8R cover stories, and his juggalo-snapping cohort, photographer Kelly O (of Seattle’s esteemed weekly, The Stranger), are self-funding a trip to the Gathering of the Juggalos this weekend—the 11th edition of the infamous Insane Clown Posse party weekend held in Cave In Rock, Illinois.

If you have absolutely no idea what we’re talking about, please refer to the following items:

1. 11th Annual Gathering of the Juggalos Infomercial

2. Kelly O’s “I’m Just a Juggalo” Photo Spread for The Stranger

3. Carnival of Our Lives Documentary Trailer

It’s all pretty INSANE, right? We can only imagine what kind of unbelievable happenings, Faygo consumption, oversized t-shirts, and wrestling-induced injuries are waiting to be documented out in the middle of nowhere by Ivers and O. The thing is, the event starts really soon, so we need your help, like, STAT! We’re trying to help them raise $1000 to defray their costs of sending themselves to Cave In Rock from Seattle. Here’s what we’re hoping to help them cover:

Two tickets to Chicago: $600
Car rental plus gas: $250
Food for three days: $150

For any donations of $25 or more, you’ll receive a free subscription to XLR8R (which is $20 alone, anyway!). So please donate via PayPal to [email protected], and rest easy knowing you’ve done your part to support music journalism brilliance. Thanks!

**update: The Stranger is footing the bill for Kelly O’s way, so we’re just trying to help Brandon realize his juggalo dream now.

Mad Decent Hooks Up Free Mixtape From Maluca

Lately, the Mad Decent website has been giving away a free mixtape every week from friends and label collaborators, like Mumdance, Nguzunguzu, Diplo, and now, the NYC-born-and-bred Maluca. The mixtape, entitled China Food, was mixed by DJ/producer Paul Devro and features 20 tracks of remixes, originals, and other mixed-and-matched goodness all covered in the subtly sassy, sultry voice of the 28-year-old chanteuse. And seeing as how similar mixtapes featuring other burgeoning starlets, like Santigold and M.I.A., have become sought-after relics of each artist’s career, this could very well be another launching pad for a Mad Decent diva. You can stream or download Maluca’s China Food mixtape here.

Gilles Peterson to Release ‘Worldwide’ Retrospective

BBC tastemaker Gilles Peterson is an institution. His Worldwide program is still going 10 years strong, and he continues to reveal fresh and interesting sounds with each broadcast, podcast, event, and compilation he touches. Pale Sketcher “Can I Go Now (Gone Version)”

We recently posted a track from Jesu-frontman-turned-solo-artist Justin K. Broadrick (a.k.a. Pale Sketcher), and now Ghostly has offered us all another taste. “Can I Go Now (Gone Version)” is the first official single from Jesu: Pale Sketches Demixed, and is certainly the closest thing to an uplifting song that we’ve yet to hear from Broadrick. Angelic synth tones cut through harmonious ambience, floating next to his simple, crunchy rhythms and the subtle vocal melodies the singer vocoded into unintelligible statements. From what we’ve heard thus far, Pale Sketcher has created a style not unlike the soundscapes from past M83 albums, but while leaning heavier on the dark, industrial nature of his lengthy background in droning metal bands.

DrumAttic Twins “Crazy Love (Peo de Pitte 2010 Disco Edit)”

This ain’t necessarily our usual steez, but we just couldn’t resist the old-school Basement Jaxx sound Peo de Pitte has bestowed upon DrumAttic Twins‘ “Crazy Love” tune. Actually, this track is an edit of Pitte’s original remix of “Crazy Love” (incidentally, we’ve never heard the original, nor can we locate it), bolstered by a few snippets from “Disco’s Revenge” by Gusto and some cut-and-paste modifications from the remixer himself. What emerges on the other side is a stuttering, hyperactive club track we’d most likely rewind at our next subterranean massive—you just can’t deny the power of that hook’s descending melody.
