diskJokke Shares Free Summer Mix, Remixes Coldplay Side-Project

Producer Joakim Dyrdahl (a.k.a. diskJokke) is hard at work getting people excited for the release of his second full-length, En Fin Tid. He’s been remixing all over the place, including “Ev Vill Hest” from fellow Norse musicians Casiokids and now a new jam from Coldplay side-project Apparatjik. The busy music maker also just shared a mix of acid-tinged Bealeric beachfront tunes for utilization at your next summery extravaganza, as well as a remix of his own tune, En Fin Tid‘s “1987,” by Banjo or Freakout. In an effort to save you from a lot of link clicking and window opening, we’ve put all those tunes down below. Go nuts!

Scuba, Mount Kimbie, Monolake, MJ Cole, and More Celebrate Two Years of Sub:Stance

Hotflush label head and XLR8R person of interestScuba has brought together some exciting names from the UK’s vast electronic music scene to ring in two years of his forward-thinking house/techno/bass music party, Sub:Stance. The party will take over both Berghain and the upstairs Panorama Bar in Berlin, with DJ/producers Mount Kimbie, Monolake, recent XLR8Rpodcast contributor MJ Cole, Mala, Appleblim, Skratch, Idjut Boys, John Osborn, Paul Spymania, and Scuba’s more techno-minded alter ego, SCB. Sub:Stance’s second birthday celebration will go down July 9 from midnight ’til god knows when. Check out the flier for the epic event below.

The Sight Below It All Falls Apart

Despite lulls in popularity, dub-techno has never really left us; after all, Fluxion, Echospace, Andy Stott, and Bvdub continue to release records full of the atmospheric, crackling beatscapes pioneered by Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus. But while Fluxion and Wolfgang Voigt are still drowning listeners in oceans of loop-based ambience, finding a producer who can combine the emotional resonance of Stars of the Lid with the techno prowess of a Kompakt record is a more difficult task, and one which illuminates what can be considered a gap in current electronic music. Fortunately, the low-profile Rafael Anton Irisarri (a.k.a. The Sight Below) fills this gap in a dazzlingly melancholy manner on his second full-length. With the help of percussionist Simon Scott, formerly of shoegaze stars Slowdive, Irisarri has crafted seven tracks that cover an astounding range of visceral sonic possibilities, from the bright guitar lines and comforting drones of “Fervent” to the steely techno chill of “Burn Me Out From the Inside.” Perhaps the track most exemplary of The Sight Below’s range, though, is the cover of Joy Division’s “New Dawn Fades”—slow-motion percussion falls low in the mix behind faraway storms of guitar, watery cracklings, droning synth harmonies, and the thin, plaintive vocalizations of Jesy Fortino (a.k.a. Tiny Vipers). The effect is of a hurricane passing over an ocean, gathering heat and force while simultaneously cooling the waters below.

Kingdom “Pathfinder”

Lifted off Rob Wonder‘s Scion Radio 17 Host EP, No Static at All, “Pathfinder” by Brooklyn’s Kingdom sounds completely sure of which route to take, especially in regards to moving dancefloors with its futuristic slant on the classic house sound. The track has about three essential parts guiding listeners through its five-and-a-half minutes. Each section boasts its own infectious, rave-friendly melodies and deep bass grooves, and never wear out their welcome. In fact, it seems the more times we listen to this jam, the more rhythmic layers of percussion and sound effects we uncover and immediately fall for. You can snag the rest of this EP, which includes tracks from Bok Bok, Kastle, and Rob Wonder himself, here. (via Pitchfork)

Another New Autechre Album is Available for Download Now

Earlier in the year, Sean Booth and Rob Brown released their first full-length since 2008’s Quaristice, Oversteps, and now only months after that album, another 10 tracks have been culled from Autechre’s hard drives and released. The new record, which is more like a mini-album compared to the duo’s recent track-list lengths, is called Move of Ten, and is available now for digital download before it is physically released July 12. You can find more info on the release and purchase the download here.

Dark Sky “Night Light”

“Night Light” by London’s Dark Sky—a group of three producers, two-thirds of which comes from the Boogaloo Crew—starts off completely unassuming. Quiet melodies and spacey textures percolate in the distance for a while until a smash of distorted bass synth, bouncing drum sounds, and clambering synth melodies introduce you to what “Light” is really about: hard-hitting bass music tastefully mixed with delicately constructed atmosphere and texture. Check out the rest of Dark Sky’s Frames EP when it drops July 12 on Pictures.

Yale Fox Maximizes DJ Profits, Nightclub Douchery

Most people are aware of the famous Frank Zappa quote, “Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.” And while, obviously, we still give it our best shot, we like to keep the sentiment in mind when describing the various intangibles of our favorite tunes. However, upon discovering this article on the New York Times’ Freakonomics blog, we’d like to add to Zappa’s point “Histographing about DJing is like being a douche.” Toronto-based DJ and Queen’s University undergrad Yale Fox has tried to break down the finer points of nightclubbing (dancing, drinking, listening to music, and spending money) and DJing into a “scientific” study for his thesis, which he calls “Inside the DJ Booth: How A Disc Jockey’s Strategic Track Selection Can Enhance Experience, Foster Loyalty, and Boost Profits.”

Aside from the study being completely necessary and totally not demeaning or counteractive to the true essence of inspired artists and DJs everywhere, Yale Fox is undoubtedly the go-to man for such information, as he has performed alongside the likes of ground-breaking artists Dave Matthews Band, Weezer, and Def Leppard and “genuinely love[s] music more than you can imagine.” Really though, if you are a DJ, producer, musician, or any such creative talent, you probably should refrain from completely discrediting your art by turning it into a fucking ‘self-starter’s guide to pandering to the lowest common denominator and getting paid while doing it,’ unless you want a snarky article posted about you on the internet. And just in case you readers don’t want to sift through the banal club jargon and ludicrous stats that litter Fox’s piece, we put a couple of our favorite graphs below. And no, they are not a joke—at least not intentionally.

New DJ Mix Available From Amon Tobin for Free Download

Bay Area sound designer and tune maker Amon Tobin has been hard at work crafting his upcoming solo album and the next collaborative record from his Two Fingers project with Doubleclick, not to mention the “Fine Objects” single he just finished up with Eskmo and the short-film score he composed for The Gift. The guy has an epic list of production credits building, and now there’s something else to add to the mix. Back in 2009, Tobin rocked four turntables at Neumo’s up in Seattle, and in an uncharacteristic turn, recorded the set. Now, fans can trade in their email address to download the mix for free. There is no track list available, but apparently a preview of a new Two Fingers song is in the mix, along with “various selections ranging from the classic to the obscure, where ‘D&B, halfstep, dubstep, flip hop, and nextflap are all rendered meaningless in the pursuit of heavy, bass-driven music.'” Download the DJ set here.
