Splatinum “Vadonna’s Magina”

Seattle duo Splatinum consists of a couple of goofballs (Andrew Luck and Adam Houghton) who love 8-bit sounds, big bass, and crunked-up vibes. As such, it’s entirely fitting that the latest Splatinum EP is entitled Love for Those Hustlers. The six-track release is not only stuffed with bouncing blap, stinging synths, and loads of classic party raps, it’s also available for free download. Despite its not-so-clever title, “Vadonna’s Magina” won us over with its fuzzy low-end, sharp percussion, acid tweaks, and liberal use of Lil Jon vocal samples.

Video: Blockhead “The Music Scene”

The folks at Ninja Tune dropped us a line to share the new video for “The Music Scene,” the title track from NYC hip-hop producer Blockhead‘s album from late last year. The clip features some really excellent psychedelic animation—think Dr. Seuss—courtesy of Anthony Schepperd, but we must admit that it does bring to mind a video from our younger days. Although the Blockhead video is undeniably sunnier, does anyone else remember Pearl Jam‘s Todd McFarlane-inked video for “Do the Evolution” from 1998? It was the band’s first video since “Jeremy.” (We swear this was a big deal at the time.)

See? Both videos are animated and have lots of animals! We’re not that off base, are we? Anyways, latent teenage fanboy grunge nerdery aside, Ninja Tune has made the Blockhead video available for download here along with a snippet of “Ugly Brown,” a new Blockhead track slated to appear later this year on the forthcoming Ninja Tune XX box set. But act fast, as the download is only available for the next five days.

matthewdavid “Trusss”

Leaving Records boss and Southern California beat-scene impresario matthewdavid is a man of many talents, many of which revolve around discovering and promoting other like-minded artists. But he also makes his own tunes, like this unreleased gem, “Trusss,” that surfaced online earlier in the week. Has anyone coined the term “beach funk” yet? This might be it. Imagine if Aphex Twin’s famous “Windowlicker” didn’t scare the living shit out of everyone… that’s kind of what “Trusss” sounds like. Regardless, we approve. (via Pitchfork via Friendship Bracelet)

TC James & The Fist O’Funk “Get Up on Your Feet (Walter Gibbons Mix)”

This classic disco edit is the first taste from the epic Walter Gibbons retrospective compilation, Jungle Music: Essential & Unreleased Remixes 1976-1986 (read more on that here), coming July 20 via Strut. For his version of the classic TC James & The Fist O’Funk number “Get Up on Your Feet,” Gibbons more than doubled its length, pumped up the percussion and horn elements, and tossed in his own bunch of analog synth sounds—effectively taking the art of edits well into the future. Listening to this track, it’s easy see why Gibbons is often referred to as a pioneer; many of the ideas displayed here are still production mainstays of contemporary disco-minded artists such as DFA, Lindstrøm, and Todd Terje.

Preview the Debut Album from Wolf + Lamb

Brooklyn duo Wolf + Lamb has been throwing amazing underground parties and releasing a steady stream of disco-influenced music for years now, but until today, the pair never had an official artist album. Love Someone is the first full-length offering from Gadi Mizrahi & Zev Einsenberg, and they’ve passed along the album’s first three tracks to preview here on XLR8R.com. The record is available today on wax, with digital copies to follow in the next few weeks.

The XLR8R Music Player requires Adobe Flash Player version 9 or later. Click here to install.

Nic Sarno “Mana Wasa”

This bouncing piece of Afro-tinged techno comes to us courtesy of the Hard Ass Sessions – Volume II compilation, and Italian producer Nic Sarno. Chosen by the Enchufada label, Sarno is one of four hotly tipped producers—alongside Bok Bok, Douster, and Zombies for Money—who were asked to contribute a track to the series that featured their personal interpretation of the kuduro sound somewhere between 135 and 142 BPM. Sarno crafted “Mana Wasa” with a group of crackling vinyl samples of African singing and flute playing, which he intertwined with a thumping four-on-the-floor beat, hypnotic synth melodies, and a ton of percussion elements. It’s a great extension of the kuduro style we’re familiar with, and piques our already budding interest in the other three tracks Volume II has to offer.
