Petrona Martinez “Aroro (Nate Mars Remix)”

NY’s dub-minded bass DJ/producer Nate Mars worked out the South-of-the-Equator sonics heard on this of remix of “Aroro,” originally done by oft-sampled Colombian vocalist Petrona Martinez. Amazingly, the singer didn’t really start her music career until 2002 at the age of 63 (she made her money collecting sand for brick making prior to then), but continues to sing and perform now moving into her seventies. Mars’ track places Martinez’s vocals in the middle of spacey synths, tropical percussion sounds complimenting the 3/3 beat, and a rolling bassline that comes and goes—leaving the aging singer’s words and melody relatively untouched. Watch the New Rainbow Arabia Video, It’s Bonkers

XLR8R Couldn't find the embed function for type: "vimeo" and source: "<embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=11812199&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="530" height="298">".

The musical love child of husband and wife Daniel and Tiffany Preston, Rainbow Arabia recently bestowed a new, totally rad music video on the world for the song “Holiday in Congo.” If you’re like us, you may have half-expected some genetically mutated gorillas sipping on Mai Tais in the jungle to be accompanying the upbeat tropical dance number, but no, the duo’s video might more accurately be called something like “Moonwalk Through Brazil.” Yep, Michael Jackson impersonators donning all sorts of wardrobe hilarities run wild in São Paulo as director Cadu Cavalcanti captures the wackiness. You may be asking yourself, “Too soon?” But remember, the globally minded Rainbow Arabia has always been a bit ahead of the curve.

Aeroplane Set to Drop Debut Album in September

Following the Belgian duo’s seemingly endless string of remixes (for the likes of Grace Jones, Lindstrøm, and MGMT) and sparse grouping of singles, Aeroplane has finally announced the release of its debut full-length, entitled, ironically enough, We Can’t Fly. The LP will reach retailers September 6 in the UK via Wall of Sound, without a label set for the US release. To mark the announcement, Aeroplane and Wall of Sound have offered the duo’s “Essential Mix” for BBC Radio 1—which was recorded live back at the end of April, and features the title track from their forthcoming debut album—for free download here. Check out a Aeroplane’s massive European and US tour schedule after the jump.

Get Brackles’ Take on the New Track From Trouble & Bass’ Supra1

Just earlier this morning, we posted the latest heat from L-Vis 1990: a remix of Polish duo Supra1‘s track for Trouble & Bass, “Still Believe.” Now, we just caught wind of FACT posting another remix of the single, this time from Blunted Robots co-owner Brackles. Producer Rob Kemp opted to keep diva Amy Douglas’ wailing vocal performance in his version, and heaped loads of bouncing low end, smooth synths, and percussion elements atop it. The track will be available to download for seven days, right here.

Stream Carl Craig’s Hot Chip Remix

It’s no secret that Hot Chip loves techno. The UK geek-pop outfit’s latest album is absolutely soaked in the genre’s kind of churning dance grooves, so they must be totally ecstatic that the Don of Detroit, Carl Craig, snagged the elements of “One Life Stand” and transformed the song into an epic techno number. Craig’s remix is a 10-minute affair that relies almost completely on one rumbling bass line, a hi-hat-heavy beat, and sparse bits of synth tones scattered throughout. Singer Alexis Taylor’s inimitable voice doesn’t make an appearance until six minutes in, and only does a quick lap before letting Craig’s instrumental retake the spotlight. You can listen to Craig’s remix wizardry after the jump. (via Discobelle)

Sebastien Grainger and Josh Reichmann Get ‘Bad’

Canadians Sebastien Grainger (of Death From Above 1979) and Josh Reichmann (of Tangiers) have left their respective duos to explore new sonic territories in the realm of musical partnerships. As Bad Tits (we’ll excuse the moniker if you will), Grainger and Reichmann delve deeper into the garage-y post-punk inclinations of their former projects, and experiment a bit more with electronics. A 7″ entitled Garbage Night is seeing release at the end of June from Hand Drawn Dracula, and a strange little video for the band’s first single, “Bankok Hilton,” is online now.

Download Free Mix From The Sight Below

Ghostly’s mild-mannered and introspective ambient artist The Sight Below dropped this mix for FACT just last Friday, and we’re still flying high on its somber sounds. His selections aren’t exactly identical to the lush textures and subtle electronics that color his original music, but they aren’t quite dancefloor friendly either. Instead, Rafael Anton Irisarri put together a potpourri of classic shoegaze, post-punk, and less esoteric sounds, explaining, “everything here is from vinyl, some tracks sound shittier than others, ‘specially if they were on a 7”.” Get the mix here, and check the tracks below.

New Mad Decent Column Travels Africa, Looks For Music

Some pretty interesting and most definitely funny things tend to surface on the Mad Decent blog, but one item in particular just caught our eye. The collective for furthering African music and culture Akwaaba has been given its own column on the Mad Decent website, called ZEMIJAMS (the name is a play on the regional term for motorcycle taxis, zemijans). Up now is a quick introduction to the new column, along with a link to a post about Ghanian hip-hop and Afro-pop, and a promise for more emerging music from Africa’s underground. We’re interested to see what develops.

Bubblin’: Iron Curtis

Who:Iron Curtis
Where: Berlin, Germany

Like many house acts, Johannes Paluka’s primary influences can be traced back to classic sounds of Detroit, but as Iron Curtis, this German producer puts his own stamp on the genre, stirring a real sense of soul into his subtle—but never minimal—brew of deep house and techno. Maybe it’s because he grew up listening to his father’s Motown records, although Paluka claims that his tastes have always been rather eclectic. Over the past year he’s released a series of EPs on a number of labels, including high-quality outposts Mirau, Morris Audio, and Mule Electronic.
