Los Rakas “Abrazame (Uproot Andy Mix)”

Once Gyptian‘s “Hold Yuh” became the biggest crossover dancehall tune of 2010, it was only a matter of time before people started flipping the track and throwing new vocals over the song’s distinctive piano riff. The folks at Dutty Artz first tipped us to “Abrazame,” the Los Rakas version which finds the Oakland-based Panamanian dancehall prodigies wistfully singing and rapping en español. That was all well and good, but than Brooklyn beatmaker Uproot Andy sent us his remix of “Abrazame,” which punches up the beat, nicely layers in some additional synths and percussion, and basically seizes a spot in the “Summer Jams 2010” playlist. If this lovelorn tune isn’t on blast at your local Latin dance party, find yourself a new spot, because the DJs are seriously slipping.

Pantha du Prince Heads Out on European, North American Tour

One of XLR8R‘s favorite albums to see release this year so far is Black Noise by German techno minimalist Pantha du Prince. Something about producer Hendrik Weber’s deft combination of field recordings, bell sounds, and churning drum-machine rhythms struck a chord both in and out of the electronic music scene, and now the talented music maker is taking his excellent tunes to the wide open road. For the rest of May and the beginning of June, Weber will be playing select dates around Europe before taking the show stateside for his first performances on US soil in three years. The whole of his long-stretching trip is detailed below. (via Pitchfork)

Supra1 “Still Believe (L-Vis 1990 Remix)”

EESH! Somebody please get Nelly on the line, because it just got really hot in here. Funky bass music champion L-Vis 1990 deconstructed the lead track from Polish production duo Supra1‘s debut EP, Still Believe, ditching Amy Douglas’ vocal altogether and reformatting the whole tune from wobbly banger status to supreme future-house heat. We can’t say for sure whose influence on the track is more responsible for the stellar outcome, so we’ll opt to say that we’d like to hear more collaborations from L-Vis and the Supra1 duo in the future. Underworld Shares First New Material in Nearly Three Years

Remember that term “electronica”? Sure you do. Remember that group Underworld? Of course! Well, the duo of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith is back in action. And maybe they didn’t quite get the memo about that whole not-so-cool-anymore dealy, as their first bit of new music since 2007’s Oblivion With Bells harkens back to electronica’s last gasp. The super-feel-good vibes of “Scribble” (from a forthcoming, as-yet-untitled album) come replete with this shiny new music video. Also, to show how much they love you, Underworld is making the song available as a free MP3 download from their official website. Now if only we could download some free E, we’d be set.

M83 Composes New Tunes For French Film

Flick-following blog The Playlist got the scoop on this interesting piece of music news. Anthony Gonzales (known to most as the man behind electronic prog-pop outfit M83) has finally been commissioned to do something he’s probably been doing in his mind since his first self-titled album: score a feature film. French director Gilles Marchand asked the ambitious artist to compose new music for his upcoming film L’autre Monde, or Black Heaven in English. From the looks of the trailer, included below, the movie appears to be a thrilling piece of sexy European sci-fi, complete with loads of CGI, young flesh, and next-level camera work, accompanied by bits of Gonzales’ work interspersed throughout. Even a snippet of the badly repped “Car Chase Terror!,” from 2005’s Before the Dawn Heals Us, makes a quick and appropriate appearance. Black Heaven will hit this year’s Cannes, and hopefully our own art-house theaters not long after.

Hardhouse Banton “Reign (Roska’s ‘Ard Food Remix)”

The original version of Hardhouse Banton‘s “Reign” surfaced in 2008, back when most of us were still saying, “UK funky? They’re really calling this genre just ‘funky’?” Nonetheless, the track’s tropical percussion, garage-like shuffle, and flirtation with house music helped set the blueprint for what has become a global movement. The song obviously has staying power, as earlier today UK funky heavyweight Roska gave away his own remix of “Reign” for free via Twitter. Roska’s version features his patented kicks and snares, and also inserts a little more space into the track, giving it a sexier, less manic vibe. At this rate, we all might be hearing “Reign” for another two years, and that’s just fine with us.

Watch New Video From Fresh Planet Mu Signee Solar Bears

Along with Chicago’s juke prince DJ Nate and Cambridge-based beat maker Oriol, Planet Mu recently signed the Irish duo Solar Bears. Producers John Kowalski and Rian Trench craft expansive motorik dance tunes that are as equally influenced by late-’70s horror-flick soundtracks as they are hazy, Boards of Canada-esque soundscapes—the latter of which is most apparent in the video for “Inner Sunshine.” Their music video features warm, pulsing footage from what could be an educational video hijacked from a school library’s archives, accompanied by a subdued bit of warped piano, guitar, and drum work that belies the rest of Solar Bears’ output. It’s a brief introduction to the duo’s forthcoming EP for Planet Mu, a six-song release called Inner Sunshine, which also features remixes from Lone and Leatherette. Check the tracklist below.

2. Photo Negative Living

4. Kill On
5. Crystalline (Letherette Remix)

Maurice Fulton and Mim Suleiman Collaborate

Mim Suleiman may not be as much of an XLR8R household name as producer extraordinaire Maurice Fulton, but that’s all to change soon with the East African singer’s collaborative effort, Tungi, set for release on producer Gerd’s Running Back label. Our friends at FACT have got the details in full. In the meanwhile, check out “Nyuli” below.

Arms & Suites “Brainwash”

We’re not complaining, but every day our inboxes are filled with pleas from artists, managers, labels, and PR jockeys pleading with us to write something about their or, more often, their client’s music. So sometimes it’s nice when an artist we know simply passes something along without any sort of self-promoting agenda. That happened yesterday when Dubbel Dutch sent us a link to fellow Austin producer Arms & Suites. There was no sales pitch and no back story, just a link and a note that said “deep spacey bass weirdness.” As it turns out, his brief description pretty much nailed it. Arms & Suites’ music takes all the shuffle, offbeat rhythms, and chopped vocal samples of UK funky and London bass music and places them in a freezer, putting a whole new spin on what is often a high-octane genre. Even better, the producer’s self-titled EP is available for free download via Bandcamp. All the songs are quality, but “Brainwash” particularly won us over with its use of a mellowed-out tribal guarachero beat.
