Bubblin’: Juju & Jordash

Who:Juju & Jordash
Where: Amsterdam, NL

Jazz heads and house fiends rarely run in the same circles, but Juju & Jordash (a.k.a. Gal Aner and Jordan Czamanski) just might allow the two groups to see eye to eye. The duo met while both men were living in Haifa, Israel and playing in a variety of post-rock, jazz, and experimental music groups, but eventually relocated to Amsterdam, where they began producing house music in earnest. 2009’s self-titled album is their most recent offering, and with its spaced-out, vaguely psychedelic sound and predilection toward improvisation and live instrumentation, Juju & Jordash proved that straight-up house music doesn’t have to be retro or a total snore.

Dubbel Dutch Shares Free Mix, Tours West Coast

DJ/producer Dubbel Dutch is just like any self-respecting southerner: he likes his beats interesting and his bass big. Austin resident Marc Glasser is currently taking his proclivities on the road for a string of dates on the West Coast—including some already completed stops in LA, a show tonight in Costa Mesa, and a special performance this Saturday at San Francisco’s premiere future-house-flexing club, Icee Hot. As a special treat, Glasser crafted a stellar mix of the kind of tunes you’re likely to hear in his set: global riddims, UK funky, and all sorts of other party-appropriate genres from likes of L-Vis 1990, Nguzunguzu, and LOL Boys. Stream and download the mix here, and peep the tracklist and Icee Hot flier below.

Stream Ras G’s New EP

The summer wildfire season is still a few months away, but Los Angeles is on fire right now. Seriously, the Southern California beat scene is absolutely bursting with talent and it seems like a new mindblowing record appears every few days. On April 27, Matthewdavid‘s Leaving Records will be adding El-Aylien Part 1, the latest EP from abstract beatmaker and Flying Lotus cohort Ras G, to the canon. Set for release on cassette and digital formats, El-Aylien Part 1 is the first half of a two-part “cosmic exhibit in sonic explorations of collage and rhythm.” We’re still figuring out exactly what that means, but in the meantime you can preview the entire EP below.

Bakey Ustl “First Class”

XLR8R favorites Teengirl Fantasy met native Estonian Bakey Ustl while studying in Amsterdam, and have been slowly spreading word of Ustl’s astounding productions ever since. “First Class” is a track with sonics existing somewhere between contemporary UK funky sounds and the deep, jazzy house found on Stuttgart’s Philpot label. With delirious, lush synths and intense polyrhythms running throughout, the high-frequency flourishes, squelchy bits, and rumbling bass play off of an exemplary sonic core. Though he doesn’t have a record deal yet, be assured that a label will snatch up Ustl sometime very, very soon, especially given his eclectic palette and range of influences.

Gadi Mizrahi & Soul Clap “Beautiful Thang”

As one part of the Wolf + Lamb DJ/production team, Gadi Mizrahi has certainly seen his star rise to unforeseen heights in the past year, and with his new vinyl-only imprint releasing tracks like “Beautiful Thang,” he can only rise higher. A funky track obviously inspired by Miami’s musical history, “Beautiful Thang” features a killer bass, nicely-padded kicks, and cut-up samples forming a melodic backbone. Combined with breezy, sexy vocals from Cnyce of Soul Clap and a backing synth drone that mirrors a prominent Kraftwerk line, the piece is certainly attuned to a club vibe, placing it in solidly in the the summer hits category.

Yellow Swans Going Places

As the last testament from the format-catholic PDX noise duo, the fittingly titled Going Places crystallizes the tension that made for Yellow Swans‘ sporadic genius and, one assumes, their unraveling. Like Gowns, another foiled and convincing noise band, Yellow Swans’ music is political in the most bummed and personal way. “Opt Out,” “Limited Space,” and “New Life” are titles of some of the dark-hued, percolating dust clouds contained on the record. As the names suggest, they ache with an awareness of being zipped into a historical moment where even micro-spaces of freedom from capitalism are compromised. Going Places has the feel of a ghost bearing down on you, and the only comfort it offers lies in the fact that it feels a lot like being alive right now.

GangStarr MC Guru Dead at 43

After a year-long battle with cancer that also included a much-publicized heart attack, MC Guru passed away last night. Founder of the pioneering hip-hop group GangStarr, Guru was not only known for his uncompromising flows, but an approach to hip-hop production that paid homage to (and included collaborations with) jazz legends such as Donald Byrd and Branford Marsalis. Though recent years had seen conflicts emerge between Guru and former partner DJ Premier, Guru’s close friendship and collaborations with MC Solar flourished, though the duo’s productions did not garner as much critical praise as hoped. Nonetheless, as Solar wrote late last night, “the world has lost a great man and a true genius,” and with his back catalog continuing to represent a golden era of hip-hop production, it is hard to disagree with that sentiment.
