Preview the New Night Slugs EP from Girl Unit

Next week, Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990‘s Night Slugs label will be releasing its third record, the I.R.L. EP from fellow London upstart Girl Unit, who, incidentally, is neither a girl nor a multi-person unit. In the meantime, the guys have been kind enough to offer an exclusive stream of three tracks from the EP, right here on XLR8R.com. The vinyl won’t be available until the EP drops on April 27, although Londoners might be able to finagle themselves a copy at the official release party this Thursday, where Girl Unit, Bok Bok, and L-Vis 1990 will be joined by Ikonika and R1 Ryders.

The XLR8R Music Player requires Adobe Flash Player version 9 or later. Click here to install.

UPDATE: As if the hype surrounding this record hadn’t already reached a fever pitch, Night Slugs has announced a contest offering the chance for some lucky vinyl enthusiast to score a 100% exclusive acetate dubplate of “IRL” backed with “Shade On.” Especially nerdy readers might enjoy this video of the dubplate being cut. To enter, just answer the question, “what does GIRL UNIT stand for?” Entries should be submitted to [email protected].

Munchi “Metele Ballaco”

So maybe this whole moombahton thing has some legs after all. What started as Dave Nada slowing down some Dutch house tunes to appease his Latin-music-loving little cousins is beginning to blossom into a full-fledged movement. Enter Munchi, a producer from the Netherlands who has previously dabbled in dubstep, B-more, bubbling, baile funk, and a number of other genres. But now he’s unveiled the Moombahton Promo EP—which can be downloaded for free from his blog—and dude has seriously upped the ante on this nascent style. The entire EP is loaded with infectiously blaring synths and rumbling reggaeton beats, but “Metele Ballaco” is especially potent with its “Planet Rock” samples and fired-up raps en español.

Tobacco “Fresh Hex (feat. Beck)”

Black Moth Super Rainbow frontman—if you can call a guy who sits on the floor during their shows a frontman—Tobacco‘s sophomore solo effort, Maniac Meat is rapidly approaching its May 25 release date. “Fresh Hex” is the latest album taster to be released into the wild, and it features an all-star guest appearance from LA troubadour Beck, whose trademark quaver pairs quite nicely with Tobacco’s usual assortment of blown-out hoover beats, psychedelic synths, and hip-hop beats.

Mi Ami Steal Your Face

If the age-old adage is applicable here, Steal Your Face is the storm following the calm of Mi Ami‘s debut, Watersports. “Harmonics (Genius of Love)” opens the SF band’s sophomore effort using all of their sonic elements at once: reverb-addled vocals, dubby basslines, distorted guitar work, and propulsive drumming. The energetic, noisy dance-punk trend continues throughout Steal Your Face, particularly well on the no-wave-inspired “Latin Lover” and “Secrets,” so much that you may catch yourself thinking you’ve stumbled upon a new Black Eyes record. Mi Ami continues to explore its loose-groove, jam-band tendencies on the epic “Dreamers” and album closer “Slow,” but in far more reserved quantities than Watersports, making for a much more exciting and immediately lovable listen.

Video: LCD Soundsystem “Drunk Girls”

We don’t care what Pitchfork says—”Drunk Girls” is a really annoying song and didn’t exactly get us excited for the forthcoming LCD Soundsystem album, This Is Happening, slated for release on May 18. The “Drunk Girls” video, on the other hand, is borderline genius. (Also, we’ve heard the rest of the album and it’s much better.) Basically, a bunch of dudes in panda suits take turns assaulting James Murphy and his band mates as they attempt to make it through the song. Mayhem ensues. Also, Nancy Whang: still adorable and totally has permission to call us for a date any time.

Blondes Head to the West Coast

This week, Brooklyn lo-fi acid-house revivalists and organic techno enthusiasts Blondes will be gracing the Golden State with a number of shows and DJ sets. Given that our San Francisco office has been drooling over these guys for months while our NY office repeatedly lords it over us just how great they (and apparently every other band in Brooklyn) is, we’re pretty excited to check out Blondes in person. Their itinerary is below.

4/20 San Francisco – High Fantasy at Aunt Charlies with Alexis Penney, Myles Cooper
4/21 Los Angeles – Mountain Bar (DJ Set)
4/22 Los Angeles – Synchronicity Space with Lucky Dragons, VoicesVoices
4/23 San Francisco – LiPo Lounge with Party Effects, Bookworms, Roche, and DJ sets from Disco Shawn, Damon P, DJ Pickpocket
4/25 San Francisco – Modern Dance at Beauty Bar (DJ Set)

HEALTH “USA Boys”

Although LA art-noise merchants HEALTH spent much of the past year melting faces with selections from their excellent Get Color album, it’s clear that the boys never lost their affinity for the dancefloor. Their forthcoming DISCO2 is packed with remixes from Javelin, Salem, Blondes, Pictureplane, and more, but it also features “USA Boys,” the only new original track to appear on the album. Yet the song doesn’t seem out of place; devoid of the band’s usual ear-splitting aesthetic, the track rolls along on a hip-hop beat flanked by synths that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Rihanna cut (this is a good thing), yet still features the band’s spooky vocal stylings and just a touch of their signature squall.

Hickup “Hakazou!”

A short while back we gave you the heads up on Dirtybird’s five-year spanning, three-disc compilation, and now its release date has finally arrived. A bonus track that didn’t make it on Five Years of Dirtybird, “Hakazou!,” by Berlin’s sub-loving duo Hickup, is a bouncing slice of heavily percussive club music that boasts one of the thickest grooves we’ve heard in a while. Quick vocal stabs and reverberated bird noises are peppered throughout the track’s six minutes, which are also complimented by a rolling cowbell and some sinister synth sounds. “Hakazou!” is stellar counterpart to the fresh-faced pair’s track that did make it on Five Years, “Hickup Theme.”

Various Artists Soma Compilation 2010

The bad news: No Soma compilation for 2009. The good news: The 2010 comp is coming out considerably sooner—and it’s as good as you’d expect from the highly regarded Glaswegian label. The album features standouts from Soma’s roster of the past year or so, from artists like Slam (represented here with the spare, light D’Julz remix of “Positive Education” and the richly layered Joris Voorn remix of “Ghost Song”) and Silicone Soul (the Ripperton remix of “Dust Ballad II,” with its great elastic bassline). 2009 might be gone, but at least some of the year’s best releases haven’t been forgotten.
