Yura Yura Teikoku Hollow Me/Beautiful

This 20-year-old Japanese trio’s greatest liability is the psych baggage they’re saddled with. On a major label in their own country, the band’s previous releases were put out Stateside by Mesh-Key, a label run by Invisible Conga People’s Justin Simon; Hollow Me/Beautiful finds the band on DFA for one of the label’s most uncharacteristic releases. Their tenth album blasts off with smooth jazz saxophone rather than mega-fuzz guitar, and “Dekinai”‘s two-note tremolo riff only sounds familiar in comparison—like someone dropped The Fall into an episode of H.R. Pufnstuf. The rest of the album finds Yura Yura Teikoku working out a language that’s similarly accessible, but puts the stress on parts of the rock vocabulary usually taken for granted.

Mike Ladd Returns With New Infesticons Slice

Jack of all trades Mike Ladd returns in April with the third installment of his Infesticons project, a musical vehicle aimed at combating “indifference and apathy.” Combining hip-hop swagger with funk’s intensity and punk’s attitude, the Infesticons’ Bedford Park features appearances from slam king Saul Williams, among others. Check out “Kick Anthem,” the first single from the album, available here for free download.

Bedford Park drops April 12 on Big Dada.

Ikonika and Cooly G Are Running the Game

It seems that the ladies of UK funky are truly bringing it in 2010, as April will see the Hyperdub release of Ikonika‘s first artist album, Contact, Love, Want, Have, and on top of that, Cooly G is now the subject of a television spot which you can view below. It’s certainly refreshing to see some ladies riding the top of an explosive production wave that doesn’t look like it’s crashing anytime soon!

Kuniyuki Takahashi Collaborates with Henrik Schwarz on New Album

Kuniyuki Takahashi, better known as simply Kuniyuki, will release his third full-length this spring on the ever-dependable Mule Musiq label. Perhaps best known for the many remixes of 2005’s “Earth Beats” and his jazzy deep house style, Kuniyuki’s explorations of jazz forms on Walking in the Naked City land somewhere between the deep house of the Moodmusic label and the West Coast jazz swing of Dave Brubeck. Featuring a vocal contribution from Henrik Schwarz and a collaboration with legendary pianist Fumio Itabashi, it is no wonder that Soulphiction and Kalabrese are already in line to remix some of the album’s tracks.

Walking in the Naked City comes out March 29 on Mule Musiq.

Jacaszek “Lament”

Polish electro-acoustic composer Jacaszek is riding a wave of interest in his work, what with his recent Resident Advisor podcast and numerous soundtrack projects under way. “Lament” is exemplary of Jacaszek’s work, which shares Henryk Górecki’s ponderous movements, Arvo Pärt’s neo-classical melodic sensibilities, and dark atmospheric flourishes that wouldn’t be out of place on a Burial record. Tonight, Jacaszek will be playing with members of the ACME orchestra at Le Poisson Rouge as part of a showcase of Polish composition, which has been given a special spotlight as part of this year’s Unsound Festival, wrappin up this Sunday in New York.

Podcast 123: Hot City

As with many underground UK producers, Hot City‘s true identity remains shrouded in mystery. Yet this shadowy figure’s tunes, often powered by bouncing beats, chopped vocal snippets, and dirty piano melodies while sounding something like the bastard child of Todd Edwards and the early days of MTV’s The Grind, continue to light up DJ sets on both sides of the pond, which is why we lured the elusive producer out of his rave cave to assemble this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Tomorrow night, intrepid London fans can also find Hot City coming out of hiding and performing as part of the How’s My Raving? VIP Crew alongside the legendary Egyptian Lover. Check this video for more details, or just dig into this party-starting mix of infectious house and garage selections.

Femme En Fourrure “Plump Bisquit”

What starts as a provocative non sequitur reiterated over handclaps and heavy percussion turns into something of a mantra for Femme En Fourrure as their track, “Plump Bisquit,” gains momentum and intensity. Classic disco elements give way to a particularly bass-heavy style of minimalistic house that eventually reaches higher and higher with stabbing horns and tense, ascending vocal samples.

sole Ends His Time at anticon

Tim Holland (a.k.a. sole) has released a statement via anticon regarding his recent decision to leave the label that he helped build:

Today, with a heavy heart I end 11+ years of working with anticon. In the early days of the label, anticon was a pet project of mine, a life-long dream. We fulfilled the dream of a collectively run record label and put out many great records and stood as an image of defiance against the music industry. Those memories, I will always have and be proud of. Sadly, those times are gone, and I need to live in the present as I prepare for the future.

Though it seems that differences over business strategy were the cause of the split, Holland goes on to note that “there are no ill feelings between myself and members of anticon.” Of course, he will continue to work and produce records, the details of which can always be found at his eminently popular site.

Edu K “Flutesnoot”

Brazil’s Edu K gets down on this four-to-the-floor, jackin’ slice of house, created exclusively for Bacardi B-LIVE. Though many producers have been incorporating marimbula samples into their tracks in recent years, “Flutesnoot” uses the thumb piano in a most effective way, bringing it in only when it is needed to maintain forward momentum. By coupling the sounds with Indian-seeming flute trills, vocals snippets, and some wonky synths bookending the piece, Edu K is proving to be one of the more exciting young producers from South America.
