Podcast 65: XLR8R Presents Speedy J

Jochem Paap, a.k.a. Speedy J, delivers the next installment of the XLR8R Podcast, an hour-long ride through pure, unadulterated techno territory in which Paap’s skills on the mixing board put just about every other DJ on the planet to shame. It’s hardly surprising, since he’s been honing his craft for over 15 years, dabbling in all forms of the genre, from hardcore to minimal. On this mix, he brings together cuts from Radioslave, Loco Dice, The Mod Wheel (a.k.a. Tom Middleton), Marco Carola, and a few of his own tracks. If you’re not dancing the living room carpet to shreds by the end of this mix, something is truly wrong.

Diplo Nominated for Grammy Award

Diplo‘s resume includes producer, DJ, Mad Decent label boss, and extreme globetrotter. Now we can add Grammy Nominee to the list too, as the man born Wes Pentz has just been nominated for a Record of the Year Award. The nomination comes for his work producing M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes,” off her 2008 album Kala.

The Grammys air February 9, 2009 on CBS.

Hudson Mohawke “Polkadot Blues”

Hudson Mohawke will soon join the esteemed Warp family when his Polyfolk Dance EP is released in 2009. The label’s given us a sneak peek of what’s to come on the Glasgow, Scotland-based producer’s forthcoming release with this track, which sits somewhere at the intersections of hip-hop, glitch, and avant-garde, contains plenty of electronic noise, and most definitely has a few shades of Dilla in the beat-making. HudMo, as we sometimes refer to him, was the youngest-ever U.K.DMC finalist, at the age of 15, and besides producing his own music, works alongside Mike Slot as Heralds of Change and is a member of the upstart Lucky Me crew. Fans of dirty beats, take note!

Best of 2008: eLZhi

The Slum Village lyricist, eLHzi, reveals a penchant for the Coen Brothers and radio-friendly alt rock.

What was the best album of 2008?

Radiohead, In Rainbows. This album was able to make people like Radiohead if they didn’t already. It was groundbreaking all the way around. Each Radiohead album is diverse, musical, and the lyrics are always on point and poetic.

What was the worst album of 2008?

I can’t really say. There is stuff I don’t like, but just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean it was the worst.

Who was the best artist of 2008?

Coldplay. On their latest album, Viva La Vida, they took it to a new level by making a concept album with more story songs.

Who was the worst artist of 2008?

Amy Winehouse was always in trouble with the drug thing going on. She should clean up her act because she is really talented.

What was the media item of 2008?

No Country for Old Men. I like a lot of movies that the Coen Brothers do. This is just as good as their other movies, if not better.

Dub Specialist Dub

One of Studio One founder Coxsone Dodd’s aliases was the “dub specialist,” and this 18-track jaunt through classic riddims shows why. Though Dodd’s mixing style wasn’t nearly as upsetting as Lee “Scratch” Perry’s, nor as majestic as King Tubby’s, it’s impossible to argue with these rinsed-out versions of stellar tracks by Cornell Campbell, Alton Ellis, The Heptones, Jackie Mittoo, The Soul Vendors, and The Lyrics–they’re all strictly foundational. Studio One is still the cornerstone of reggae to this day, and for authentic, old-school echo-chamber business, you can’t beat Dub Specialist.

Group Inerane Guitars from Agadez

Sublime Frequencies co-founder Hisham Mayet travels like a tramp, carrying his bag of recording equipment on hitched rides and charter buses across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Out of the Saharan Desert, he‘s brought back Guitars From Agadez, 10 tracks of mind-bending guitar rock by Group Inerane. Bibi Ahmed‘s cyclical, psychedelic riffs are mesmerizing enough, but the group female vocals work like a prism refocusing a spectrum of sonic colors. These shrill howls and modulated chants float around the steady rhythms of surf rock and psych-blues. Above all, though, this record begs the question–when and how do we get to hear Group Inerane again?

O Soundtrack My Heart

On the official video for “O Soundtrack My Heart,” the PIVOT boys have given us some live footage of a performance at La Route Du Rock in St. Malo, France, and it’s not some crappy cellphone camera taping the show either. Lots of nice, professional close-ups of Dave Miller and Laurence and Richard Pikeper playing their instruments against the backdrop of a rather intense light show. “We played at 1 a.m. after Sigur Rós in front of 500 people and behind an amazing spaceship,” said a recent post on the band’s MySpace blog. “Needless to say, it was big.”

MSTRKRFT Album Gets Release Date

Nearly three years after the release of MSTRKRFT‘s debut album, The Looks, Toronto’s Jesse F. Keeler and Al-P are ready to unveil their follow-up on March 17, via Dim Mak/Downtown Records.

Keeler has said in the past that the new album, which the duo’s dubbed Fist of God, would be a record of “darker, underground disco and house, with elements of American rock music.” He and Al-P have also put their taste for Bay Area hip-hop to good use, with E-40, Freeway, and Lil’ Mo all making contributions to the album. Elsewhere, Ghostface Killah, John Legend, and N.O.R.E. make cameos.

In the meantime, the two are spending the month of December playing several shows in the U.S. and Canada, undoubtedly showcasing material from Fist of God.

Friendly Foes “My Body (Is A Strange Place To Live)”

They’ve gotten their shit together, and here’s another new one from Detroit’s Friendly Foes. The self-proclaimed “power trio,” who formed just a little over a year ago, seems to be one of the new breed of indie rock bands reviving the sound of the ’90s (have you noticed the sudden increase in flannel shirts on the bus lately?), as evidenced with the simple-but-driving song structures where guitar plays front-and-center, no questions asked. The band’s debut full-length, Born Radical, will drop January 13 via Gangplank, though you can pick it up now digitally if that’s too long of a wait.
