Dave P and Adam Sparkles “Hoovers Apprentice (Radio Edit)”

Dave P and Adam Sparkles are perhaps best known for hosting parties like New York institution FIXED (with JDH) and Philadelphia’s Making Time, but the two can also bring the party vibes on their own work, as evidenced by their debut release, “Sunday Night in Glasgow.” Hard-hitting yet melodic, the single features three tracks that borrow from techno and rock, and this track’s slow-but-steady build that eventually peaks in all its synth-ridden glory makes it aptly suited to any rave-style fiesta occurring in the neighborhood. Dave P and Adam Sparkles – Hoovers Apprentice (Radio Edit)

Friends of Friends of Friends

Dykeritz
Weirdo pomp-and-circumstance pop with the airy, ’60s edge of Ariel Pink and the prog-disco leanings of MGMT. Rearrangerologyistics is out now on Lucky Madison.

Dirty Mittens
Driven by Chelsea Morrissey’s unmistakable trill and her lyrics about awkward times, this band manages a summery, light sound despite a rather prominent horn section. Their new EP, Pinky Swear, was produced by Double Dutch’s Dhani Rosa.

Boy Gorilla Records
Boy Gorilla Records was started in April 2006 by Devin Gallagher to release music from assorted BFFs he went to high school with in Salem. It releases home tapes, CD-Rs, and other collaborative small-batch audio experiments, mostly made by bands whose members can’t drink legally.

Ghosties
Creepy party jams, acoustic experiments, and the seedlings of some very gripping confessional folk-pop characterize Ghosties, Devin from Boy Gorilla’s solo project.

Typhoon
Many layers of guitar, bass, and trumpet over tight rhythms and odd, off-key vocals are the signatures of this young, yet musically mature, jam squad.

Eskimo & Sons
A quirky, multi-layered, rhythmic indie-folk hullabaloo complete with tuba and violin, and led by the sweet yodeling of Danielle Sullivan (who dates Kyle Morton of Typhoon). As of September 6, the band has stopped playing shows, so too bad for you.

Double Dutch
Dhani Rosa and Jordan Bagnall of Eskimo & Sons play in Double Dutch, a clever amalgamation of electronics, shuffling drums, campfire sing-alongs, and Bagnall’s girlish voice and violin playing. Their debut, Gungle Dungn, is out now on Bang Back.

Breakfast Mountain
As Breakfast Mountain, Dhani Doubledutch and Devin Ghosties make psychedelic 8-bit crunk that alternates between freaky dance jams and kooky hip-hop, as on the Kriss Kross-sampling “Kewl Got Any N00DS.”

Southern Belle
Funny, honest, keyboard-driven pop from four under-21s with a cool sense of rhythm. Hurry Up and Thrill Me, their debut, is out soon.

Guidance Counselor
If I Am the World Trade Center was one person, and had a creepier (well… guidance counselor-esque) vibe, then it might add up to the synth-and-pedal-driven electro-pop of this dude.

Starfucker
Self-conscious and catchy synth-driven pop from a trio that look like Klaxons’ West Coast cousins. Their self-titled debut was just released on Badman Recordings.

Copy
As Copy, Marius Libman makes riveting, computerized disco dance that’s been favorably compared to Ratatat, Timbaland, and Delia Gonzalez, but also contains a heavy dose of 8-bit trickery and influence from melodic electro outfits (think Clone and Gigolo Records).

Strength
Three guys make strutting vocal disco that drips with sex in the style of Rod Stewart’s “D’ya Think I’m Sexy” and Rolling Stones’ ”Miss You.”

The One Superpsychosexy

Bay Area vocalist The One (with his beatmaking collaborator Geoffrey) is among a slate of artists in recent years that have helped to put back the neo in neo-soul. “Beautifulwonderful” meshes future funk and slo-mo hip-hop beats, with The One’s sensual voice enveloping the beats like liquid candy: it may not always be good for you, but you’ll want more after your first taste. And taking your “Milkshake Thick” may help quench that appetite for sensual cooing. Superpsychosexy doesn’t break much ground, but its unadulterated funkiness earns its neo stripes. If you’re down for an intense, mirror-fogging time with your significant other, grab this and put it on. You’re welcome.

lone “Interview at Honolulu”

In the rightfully named “Interview at Honolulu,” listeners are swept away to a soothing island paradise with lone‘s dreamy music. The soaring, atmospheric tones and deliberately placed, synths are evocative of acts likes of Boards of Canada, while the hazy, syncopated beats and forward-thinking analog feel suggests the sounds of Flying Lotus. On his recent Dealmaker Records release, Lumurian, lone causes your mind to wander off to a pleasurable place while dropping dense, hip-hop beats, appealing to both spacey idealists and head-nodders.

Podcast 56: Nick Catchdubs: The In Sound From Way Out!

“I didn’t set out to make a rave valentine to the Beastie Boys-it just turned out that way,” testifies Nick Catchdubs as he graces XLR8R Podcast listeners with a sweat-drenched, bass-ridden exclusive mix. The Brooklyn-based DJ, who co-founded Fool’s Gold Records with A-Trak, drops heaps of tracks here that employ techno samples and drum sounds in the same anything-goes, hodgepodge fashion the Beasties raided old-school soul breaks and Moog records. Staying faithful to his love of new music and original remixes, Catchdubs assembles a diverse collection of tracks (including some fresh exclusives) that delivers an apt gauge of the present dance music scene. Top 10: Michna, Born Ruffians, Lemonade

Michna
Magic Monday
Ghostly
Release Date: October 7

Michna (born Adrian Michna), a production partner of Bonde do Role and Diplo, has released his own sparkling instrumental debut album, Magic Monday. Here, ambient synths and twinkling accents dance whimsically through melodies grounded in sturdy-but-complicated rhythms. A skilled trombonist, Michna includes a horn that appears happy and buoyant in one minute, and in another instance, bluesy and sedated. LM

Lemonade
Lemonade
True Panther
Release Date: October 7

While this is undoubtedly a suite of electronic music made for the club, Lemonade’s debut album feels as though members Callan Clendenin, Alex Pasternak, and Ben Steidel have gone out of their way to make sure it won’t get shelved as “just another dance record.” Attention to detail is pretty remarkable here–the shades of grime, dancehall, dubstep, and acid house feel perfectly placed amid the synths and echoing vocals. Pasternak’s training in Arab music adds another layer of musical depth, particularly on the hypnotic “Nasifon.” JM

Broker/Dealer
Soft Sell
Spectral Sound
Release Date: October 21

This is the first release Broker/Dealer has dropped on Spectral Sound since 2004, and the duo is making quite a grand re-entrance with the Soft Sell EP. The title track is a slow-building techno number of laptop-generated melodies that sweep over sharp snares and handclaps, while “Save it for Later” follows a similar trajectory, just with more minor chords. Kompakt’s Thomas Fehlmann remixes two versions of the title track, stripping it down to a more minimal style and upping the static count considerably. JM

Jimmy Edgar
“Nothing is Better”
Moodgadget
Download

This is one of those tracks you either love or hate, given its extremely minimal, subtle nature. But it’s precisely those elements–which mostly play out in the form of a brooding synth line–that give “Nothing is Better” the sinister feel of impending doom that’s so compelling. It’s work to get through, but rewarding at the end. Ditto for the more abstract remix, courtesy of Hefty Records founder John Hughes III. JM

Johnny Osbourne
Truths and Rights Deluxe Edition
Heartbeat
Release Date: Out Now

A definite foundation of the proto-dancehall era, this album was produced by the influential reggae producer Sir Coxsone Dodd and features Studio One artists like Roland Alphonso, Ernest Ranglin, and Jackie Mittoo. I wasn’t actually alive in 1979 to hear the album, but the word amongst the older and wiser is that this re-issue, which includes six new tracks in addition to the original material–sounds as good now as it did then. JM

People Under the Stairs
Fun DMC
Gold Dust Media
Release Date: September 30

Double K and Thes One love fun hip-hop and they craft their own version of it very well. “Let go of hostility, my people, all we really need is fun,” say the People Under the Stairs on their new album, Fun DMC. Soulful, uplifting, and completely danceable, with a horn section reminiscent of Earth, Wind & Fire, this album’s funky rhymes and rhythm have an infectious flow. JM

eLZhi
“Talking in my Sleep”
Fat Beats
Download

Somnambulists, insomniacs, and all those who can’t drop into normal sleep patterns, take note: Detroit hip-hop veteran eLZhi has crafted this spooky, reverb-drenched track, off his debut solo album, The Preface, and it’s the sort of number to be listened to while staring at a bleak urban landscape around three in the morning. The lyrics follow suit, and seem to be mostly concerned with the confusion one experiences when waking from a nightmare.

Born Ruffians
Little Garcon EP
Warp
Release Date: September 30

Toronto’s Born Ruffians dropped an impressive debut album earlier in the year, and this new EP finds remixes of two of its tracks, along with three unreleased cuts. As was the case with Red, Yellow, and Blue (whose title track shows up here in radio-edit form), the trio keeps its musical structure simple on the new songs, proving that one doesn’t need much more than guitars, bass, drums, and the occasional keyboard to make enjoyable indie-pop. Remixes come courtesy of White Williams and Four Tet. JM

Creepy Autograph
Murder Sex
Valentine Connexion
Release Date:

Maybe we’re overdoing it on the Jimmy Edgar tip this week, but we can’t not put an EP entitled Murder Sex in here. Particularly when it’s techno and electro that’s both sinister and soothing, and rumored to be made by the aforementioned producer and some other anonymous people. According to the disc’s press release, Creepy Autograph is “so torn by love that they will continue this project as a result of their sexual frustration.” Hence track names like “I Wanna Fuck You.” JM

Arctic Hospital
Neon Veils
Lantern
Release Date: Out Now

The first release off Plop offshoot label Lantern, Neon Veils is an eight-track trip through precisely made techno. Faceless, soulless music this is not. Working in a similar style to that of Luomo or Minilogue, producer Eric Bray delivers a collection that’s deceptively melodic and ethereal, given his chosen moniker. The album calls to mind sunny green fields, rather than dark, icy landscapes. JM

Text by Jennifer Marston and Lulu McAllister.

Stay the Same

An English duo making electro-house with heavily distorted guitars, driving beats, and a whole lot of sass? Get outta town! But, autoKratz conveys a complex sense of inventiveness with “Stay the Same,” off their recent Down & Out in Paris & London release on Kitsuné. In the cleverly animated video, various life cycles are followed, from conception to termination, reminding us that change is the only constant and “we can’t always stay the same, but we keep hanging on.” autoKratz just may have crafted a fist-pumping electro dancefloor anthem while reminding us of a life lesson we must keep relearning.

Lindstrøm “The Long Way Home (Prins Thomas Edit)”

Two of Balearic disco’s undisputed greats have united (again) for this song. With his meandering musical travelogue, Where You Go I Go Too, now released, Lindstrøm handed off “The Long Way Home” to fellow Norwegian and frequent collaborator Prins Thomas, who edited the 15-plus-minute number down to about six. This remix is pretty, and there’s not really a better word to describe it. It left stars in the eyes and a smile on the face of our melancholy-hampered in-house contributor.

Pets On Prozac “Aso Bosa”

Pets on Prozac may hail from the bleak and freezing Scandinavia (from Finland, to be exact), but they aren’t doling out melancholy downers via abstract compositions or dark techno. Rather, the duo works with upbeat, house-influenced dance tracks that would suit the Discobelle crowd–and they sound as though they’ve had a blast making them. Much laptop-generated mayhem occurs on this number, which Pets describe as “tropical-house-meets-gypsy-tech.” Fans of this track should also check the Ruff Ruffian EP, just released today.
