The second release came from Luke Slater’s L.B. Dub Corp project in August.

The three-track release delivers a “journey that is unequivocally enduring and flexible for journeys on-and-off the dancefloor,” the label explains.

Mark Evemport “Woxy”

Later this month, Opilec Music will release Drone, the latest EP from Italian producer and Sticky Music label boss Mark Evemport.

The eight-track Drone EP precedes a 22-track album—set to drop via Sticky Music later this year—with both releases featuring a selection of music curated by Opilec label head I-Robots from Evemport’s unreleased vault. Drone wears Evemports disco, afro, and techno influences on its sleeves with a set of deep and dubby cuts built around tribal rhythms and intoxicating atmospheres. The EP flows through three chapters of varying intensity, as Evemport explains:

“The EP, in my opinion, can be divided into three distinct parts: the first one explores the deepest African sounds, the second part is built around two tracks with hypnotic grooves but at the same time aggressive moods, and finally three tracks that were born from my desire to get outside what I’ve produced so far.”

To give our readers a taste, Evemport has offered up the EP’s otherworldly closing track, “Woxy,” as today’s XLR8R download. Built around an alluring low-slung groove and floating atmospheres, it’s the type of track that will provide perfect introspective dancefloor moments.

You can pick up “Woxy” below, with the EP available for pre-order here

How To Dress Well Shares New Video From Forthcoming Album

Tom Krell (a.k.a. How To Dress Well) has shared a new video single from his forthcoming album, The Anteroom.

The Anteroom, which drops via Domino on Friday, is the fifth LP under Krell’s How to Dress Well moniker, presenting “blizzardous electronic noise, fragile melodies, and poignant poetry,” while reclaiming “the experimental core of the HTDW project.” Recorded after Krell relocated to LA, the album was co-produced by Oneohtrix Point Never-collaborator Joel Ford.

The new video for single “Body Fat” was written by Krell and co-directed Justin Daashuur Hopkins and Krell. The single looks to the transmission of trauma, as Krell explains:

“The song is about the intergenerational transmission of trauma – about the way rage persists in the flesh from way before you as an individual. This is why life is painful, why love is difficult… When I first started writing it, I felt like ‘damn THIS is the song I’ve been trying to write for the last 5 years.”

You can find the video below, along with a new mix from Krell titled • If We Do Feel Empty Inside, What Are We Supposed To Do About It? •.

Podcast 564: Niagara

Sara Eckerson and brothers Antonio and Alberto Arruda are Niagara, a Portuguese trio who first appeared in 2011 with a six-track CDr via Dromos Records. Since then, they’ve affiliated themselves closely with Príncipe, the leading Lisbon-based label with a focus on artists based in the capital, including DJ Marfox, DJ Nigga Fox, and DJ Lycox—though Niagara’s new slowed-down house-oriented/post-punk aesthetic is a stark contrast to the fast-paced Kuduro and Batida rhythms of the aforementioned. Having debuted on Príncipe in 2013 with Ouro Oeste, they’ve returned with two EPs—2015’s Ímpar and 2016’s São João Baptista—and, most recently, a debut album, Apologia, a “patchwork of today’s moods of exotica” with some “sparse synth work reminiscent of Blade Runner’s skyline,” the label explains. Elsewhere, they’ve shared material via Videogamemusic [Canas; 2015], FTD, a London-based label run by Charles Drakeford, and their own Ascender, founded in 2015.

Their XLR8R podcast is a collection of ambient cuts, perfect for listening in the car or, even better, through headphones on a cold and rainy afternoon. It has a psychedelic feel to it, especially to begin with; abstract vocals and warped melodies reign early on but are soon joined by distorted beats, before these fade away as the mix reaches a close. It’s a mix that must be listened to closely for full effect, so put the headphones on and drift away.

What have you been up to recently?

We’ve been recording some new music and finishing up some new songs we want to put out next year.

You’ve just released your debut album via Príncipe. How do you feel it compares to your earlier work?

We feel it is the natural continuation of everything else we’ve done before.

When and where was the album recorded?

The album was recorded during last year. Although one of the songs is a little bit older. All the tracks were recorded and produced in our studio outside of Lisbon.

The album’s style is described as “Fourth World PLUS.” What do you mean by this?

Our friends at Príncipe came up with that term to describe the record. We believe they wanted to capture the general atmosphere of the record, that we believe is very varied.

When and where was this particular mix recorded?

This mix was recorded on October 6 in our studio, the same place where we recorded the album.

How did you select the records you included?

We picked tracks that are nice to listen to at home.

What was the process behind it—was it recorded in one take?

It was recorded all in one take, by mixing records into each other on two turntables and a mixer.

Was there a particular idea you were looking to convey?

We wanted the mix to generate a cool vibe, without a lot of peaks, but also without getting too monotonous.

What equipment did you record it on?

One old Behringer mixer and two Technics Sl 1210 mkii.

What else do you have coming up this year?

We don’t have any plans until the end of this year. But, beginning next year there will be some new music out on Ascender.

Due to temporary issues regarding the GDPR, EU readers can download the podcast here.

Rose launched SUB:STANCE at Berghain in 2008 with Paul Fowler (a.k.a. Paul Spymania), before retiring the party in 2013 and kicking off its label arm. Following that, on November 2, Rose will release SUB:STANCE in Retrograde, a previously unheard collection of tracks produced during the sessions for the first two Scuba albums (2008’s A Mutual Antipathy, and 2010’s Triangulation), before dropping the Sounds of SUB:STANCE compilation on November 23, featuring unreleased or previously vinyl-only material from artists such as Shackleton, Vex’d, Untold, TRG (a.k.a. Cosmin TRG), Mala, Skream, Peverelist, Instra:mental, Matty G and, of course, Scuba.

They kick things off with a night with tINI and the gang, featuring tINI, Molly, Makcim, and Pelle & Roon at popular venue Bret. The second event is, arguably, the biggest of ADE and finds VBX teaming up with FRCC, Ricardo Villalobos’ Frequency Resonance Remote Control, for a lineup that oozes talent with Ricardo Villalobos, Seth Troxler, Zip, Sonja Moonear, Steve Rachmad, Nicolas Lutz, and Spokenn (Ferro & Reiss) in the industrial setting of Warehouse Elementenstraat. Following that, on October 20, VBX will host an afterhours with Dyed Soundorom, Voigtmann, Max Vaahs, Makcim, and Reiss. To round off the marathon of musical talent on offer, VBX has invited Praslesh (Raresh & Praslea), Fumiya Tanaka, Francesco Del Garda, Ferro, and Kristina to throw down at Shelter. Even picking just one of these would be a difficult choice so a quadruple header might just be the only way to do it.

Artists Empowering Their Community to Create Change

16:45—17:30

DeLaMar Theater (D5 Panel Room) | Marnixstraat 402, Amsterdam

“Dance music and politics are intrinsically intertwined and have been since its origins.” A question we regularly ask within our society: does being in a position of artistic influence mean that you take on the role of helping you or a specific community to create change? Being an artist in the public eye automatically puts you in a position where you can implement change, so should it be necessary to do so? These are questions and themes that are more relevant now than ever, so to hear about examples of artists really making a difference in their communities may inspire you and others to do the same. This talk is hosted by Blond:ish (CA), Dave Clarke (GB), Dominic Peters (Goldfish, SA), Sam Feldt (Artist, NL), and Tala Mortada (LB), with Alison Tickell (Julie’s Bicycle, UK) leading the conversation.
