The Week In Tours, July 5

This week, the UK can look forward to avant-house performances from duo Radioclit, while those wealthy few who can stand being in an arena have the chance to dance to Kavinsky as he opens for the almighty Daft Punk. Brooklyn’s near-hessian outfit Panthers will brave a strenuous month of back-to-back dates, while Lex records’ artsy hip-hop group Subtle treks through the East Coast and adds few stops down South.

E-40 Releases Pre-Hyphy Era DVD

With the godfather of the hyphy movement E-40 in superstar mode, it’s about time someone paid respect to the hero’s past. Thankfully, prior to the launch of his new album, The Ball Street Journal, his very own Sick Wid’ It label, along with Jive, is releasing The Best of E-40: Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow–The Videos.
Featuring singles from 40’s Jive days, this collection cycles through 1993-2003’s pre-hyphy videos. There’s really nothing more refreshing than Timberland boots, Too $hort cameos, and a little Suga T. And while it’s easy to fall for 40’s new party slang rapped over Rick Rock’s futuristic beats, tracks like “Sprinkle Me” and “Rapper’s Ball” serve as a reminder for the godfather’s innovative lyrical visions.
Sure, it’s all on Youtube, but why worry about annoying buffering and resolution when you can watch “Captain Save A Hoe,” any time, any day. Could your friends be any more psyched?
The Best of E-40: Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow–The Videos is out July 17, 2007 on Sick Wid’ It/Jive/Legacy.
Daily Download: Ghislain Poirier “La Ronde”

Our man Ghislain Poirier just pounded out another bass-heavy treat. Incorporating the energy of dancehall with the heaviness of dubstep, Poirier looks to be mapping out a new blueprint instrumental hip-hop. This French-Canadian is, without a doubt, a subsonic architect.

Dubblestandart Immigration Dub
While singers usually get all the credit, there’s often far more pressure on the backing band to come through, and Vienna-based Dubblestandart has backed some of reggae’s finest, including Lee Perry and Dillinger. Immigration Dub marks their tenth full-length recording, and their opening sentiment–”We’re stoned!” proclaimed over and over in the horn-laden, deep drum mix–is a quick indicator as to who king is (Namely, bass). The low-end is the band’s seductive, not-so-shy trademark. And when the likes of Ken Boothe, Prince Far I, and Ari Up find their way inside, it’s a party you can’t miss. The decibels emanating from this soundsystem are simply unavoidable.
Jordan Isip Curates Scab On My Brain

Philadelphia’s Space 1026 gallery gets a taste of the strange world of New York-based artist Jordan Isip this month, as Isip gathers his work and 11 other artists together for Scab On My Brian.
Jordan Awan, Gregory Benton, Kiersten Essenpreis, Aya Kakeda, Liz Lee, Carl Dunn, Evah Fan, Mariano Ching, Louie Cordero, James Kirkpatrick, Nate Williams, and Isip himself use drawings, paintings, silkscreens, and sculptures to “create figurative narratives that are both allegorical and psychological.” That’s a rather broad statement, since most art is (or should be) allegorical or psychological. But interpretations aside, Scab On My Brain should be worth checking, given that Isip’s artistic resume is top-shelf (Adbusters, Juxtapoz, The NY Times). Expect a plethora of strange creatures (see Cordero’s image below), wild color combinations, unsettling images of the human body, and a few minimalist pieces to round things out.
Scab On My Brain runs from July 6 – July 28, 2007
The opening reception is Friday, July 6, at 7 p.m.
Space 1026, 1026 Arch St., Philadelphia

Daily Download: Printer “Allright”

Using heavily layered synth chords, IDM drums, and soft, ethereal vocals, the four members of Denmark’s Printer ensure “Allright” sidesteps a downtempo pigeonhole and continues the band’s endeavors to unearth rock’s most experimental sides.
