MIKEY’s New Video Follows Five Genderless Gods on a Path of Transformation

MIKEY is set to release their debut EP, Paths, on June 8.

An iconic figure in Berlin’s queer scene, MIKEY’s music harnesses the pop format to describe new ways of being and looks to provide “a prophetic map for a generation that is hungry for transformation.” The self-described “gender terrorist” honed their skills via Sydney’s live music scene before spending time in New York and London where they encountered a community of queer nightlife characters who awakened the courage for self-discovery that has since become a central theme of their music.

MIKEY’s EP announcement lands with a video for “Paths,” the EP’s achingly beautiful title track, in which genderless gods personify the elements of earth, air, fire, and water, as MIKEY explains:

“At the time I wrote ‘Paths’ I felt like I was receiving a message that was so much bigger than me and what I’d come to learn about life and the universe. The process of writing it helped me break it down. The lyric line ‘die before you die’ is about acknowledging each and every moment and ‘cry before you cry’ is about not being afraid of heartbreak. In the end, the message is simple: this very moment is all we have to live for. The video follows what I like to call The Wonder Warriors: five genderless Gods embodying each of the elements.”

J Colleran (f.k.a MMOTHS) Announces Debut Album, Gardenia

Irish producer J Colleran, formerly known as MMOTHS, has announced his debut album project Gardenia, scheduled for release via Because Music on the June 29. Alongside this announcement, J Colleran has revealed accompanying visuals by director Christopher Gray for track “bERA.”

We’re told that “bERA” began as a simple experiment using pianos and arpeggiators that slowly developed into “a shimmering elemental piece.” The coinciding video, directed by Gray, was inspired by the photography series by Anton Polyakov who documented the people of Transnistria, an independent state affected by the constant intimidation of military conflict.

The announcement follows the recent quick-fire single “O+SOH,” which served as a “transitional primer” for the Irish producer and classical pianist, forming the base from which to launch Gardenia, itself described as “a sweeping experimental soundscape inspired by childhood memories and the natural beauty of his native Ireland.” We’re told that it stems from writing music “for fictional, non-existing spaces and worlds of his own making.”

05. and the sky cracked for the first time

The last early-bird tickets for Lisbon’s Nova Batida event are on sale via XLR8R.

Nova Batida is a brand new city festival for Europe aiming to “blend the freshest music, art, culture, and lifestyle from all corners of the world in one of the most exciting creative hubs.” The event is hosted by Soundcrash, established London promoters and creators of Soundwave, Paradise Island, and Funk & Soul Weekender festivals.

The setting is just 15 minutes away from the city’s beaches.

A slew of quality names are confirmed for the two-day event, including Seun Kuti, who’ll perform with his father’s storied Afrobeat ensemble Egypt 80, and Stones Throw head Peanut Butter Wolf. Little Dragon, Camilla Fuchs, Izem, Octa Push, and Blaya have also joined, lining up alongside acts like Mount Kimbie, DJ Marfox, Gilles Peterson, and George FitzGerald. Stigmata ‘XLR8R Mixes’

Last month, André Walter’s Stigmata alias returned with Paraspectral, a new album that kicked off Frankfurt-based imprint Modular Source.

Originally a collaborative project between André Walter and Chris Liebing, Stigmata now returns as Walter’s solo project with a fresh longplayer. First emerging as a producer in the late ’90s and early ’00s, Walter’s entry into the electronic realm was due to a feeling of creative stagnation in the heavy rock realm and the fresh inspiration of electronic music’s “synthetic sounds and the ability to manipulate these sounds in an endless way.” A string of solo and Stigmata releases followed, directly inspired by the free experimentation of early electronic pioneers such as Cabaret Voltaire, Skinny Puppy, and The Klinik.

The new Paraspectral LP finds Walter in devastating form, delivering 13 tracks that touch on modern and old-school techno, industrial, ’90s rave, and acid, all of which are held together with the uncompromising, heavy-duty Stigmata signature.

In support of the release, Walter has offered up exclusive mixes of album cuts “Echololita” and “Paraspectral,” two face-melting techno cuts, as free downloads. You can pick up the tracks via WeTranfer below, with the album available here.
