Poirier Readies New EP Ahead of Carnival Season

While much of the Northern Hemisphere remains hunkered down during the dark winter months, folks closer to the equator are already gearing up for Carnival’s street festivities, which culminate next month ahead of Ash Wednesday. While it probably won’t be warm in Quebec come Mardi Gras, Montreal’s Poirier is nonetheless starting to heat things up with some new high-energy riddims, and will release a new EP, Soca Road, on January 17 through the Mixpak imprint. For those engaging in the pre-Lent revelries, the release date will give you plenty of time to incorporate the tracks into your set atop a Carnival float, while the rest of us can use the record’s island vibes to channel some Caribbean warmth up north. The artwork for the release is above, while a streaming preview of the record can be found below.

Details of Forthcoming VCMG Full-Length Announced

It’s been over 30 years since the last full-length release from the combined efforts of UK musicians Vince Clarke and Martin Gore. That album, Speak & Spell, released by the then-nascent Mute imprint, launched Depeche Mode into the mainstream and provided the band with its most recognizable song, the indelibly saccharine “Just Can’t Enough.” Late last year, the pair came together as VCMG for the release of “Spock,” the first single from the duo’s forthcoming full-length effort, Ssss, which is fittingly being released by none other than Mute on March 13. The 10-song album will be rooted in techno, a far cry from the syrupy synth-pop of the musicians’ first mega-hit, but is sure to draw on the pair’s 30-plus years of experience producing electronic pop music, both in Depeche Mode and other projects like Yaz and Erasure. The second single from the album will be “Single Blip,” which, like “Spock,” will receive the full remix treatment. Details on that are on the way, but the full tracklisting for Ssss is already available, and can be seen below.

2 Zaat
3 Spock

5 Bendy Bass

Lamin Fofana “Brokedown City”

NYC-via-Sierra Leone DJ/producer and Dutty Artz affiliate Lamin Fofana is set to release a new EP, Dubious Prey, the follow-up to his 2010 debut EP, What Elijah Said. The new EP features two originals, including this one, “Brokedown City,” a dark but still active piece of techno with a steady four-on-the-floor. The song’s notably tropical percussion is buffeted by potent synth lines, which bleed in and out of the song, and a barely audible vocal sample that occasionally slips into the mix. UK label Sticks N Stones will release the vinyl format of Dubious Prey on January 30 with a digital release to follow on February 27. The tracklist for both formats, as well as the artwork, can be found after the jump.

Clicks & Whistles Can’t Believe EP

Over the course of the past year, Charlotte-based duo Clicks & Whistles has charted an interesting trajectory. The pair’s debut single, “Cranberry Goose,” made a splash on Distal’s Embassy label with its infectious combination of vintage videogame melodies and Southern rap-indebted beats. Followed by some quality remixes and the announcement that Clicks & Whistles would be joining the impressive artist roster of Kingdom’s Fade to Mind label, the producers appeared poised to become one of the US’ breakout bass-music acts. Then, things started to get a little weird.

Last autumn saw the release of the “Neva Get Caught” b/w “Raw Passion” single on T&A, an imprint that has made its name largely on third-wave Baltimore club, hip-hop-influenced electro, and, more recently, moombahton. While the EP’s original tunes were solid, T&A isn’t exactly the first label that comes to mind when it comes to forward sounds, particularly those influenced by the current UK bass spectrum, and that showed in the EP’s puzzling selection of remixers. (That being said, the Starks & Nacey rework remains incredibly solid.)

Now, Clicks & Whistles is offering the Can’t Believe EP, a three-song release on the even-more-confusing Party Like Us, a label headed up by Trouble & Bass cohort AC Slater. On the bright side, there are no questionable remixes to be found, as Can’t Believe contains only original Clicks & Whistles material. Unfortunately though, it is a far cry from the duo’s best work. The EP’s press materials cite similarities to artists such as Hudson Mohawke, Rustie, and Girl Unit, but the Can’t Believe EP simply can’t match those producers’ inventive output.

“Can’t Believe” kicks off the release with lots of crunchy, distorted bass, some twinkling synths, and a chipmunked R&B vocal snippet. It’s a passable effort, but wears its influences so brazenly that it ultimately sounds like a knockoff. The same goes for “Relief” with its stabby, HudMo-esque bassline. Sound quality isn’t a problem here, as the wistful synth melodies and snappy drums all work as intended. What’s holding these songs back is a lack of inspiration, which is unfortunate when the duo has previously shown such promise. The EP’s best track is the closing number, “Saved,” which utilizes some bombastic synth melodies that wouldn’t be out of place in a early-’00s trance anthem and lays them over some nicely popping percussion.

Only time will tell if the Can’t Believe EP is a sign of things to come, or simply a subpar aberration from an outfit that is normally pretty solid. One could theorize that Clicks & Whistles purposefully chose to cull together a few of its more mediocre productions, knowing that its core audience doesn’t consider Party Like Us a premiere outpost. Regardless of what happened, the Can’t Believe EP is a disappointment. Moving forward, the duo would be well served to choose more carefully, both in terms of labels and song selection.

Orca Releases New Record by XI

Earlier this week, the London-based imprint Orca dropped its fifth release, “Immunity” b/w “Squeeze,” by recent Berlin transplant XI. Both tracks offer haunting bits of broken UK garage rhythms marked by plenty of low-end punch, but “Immunity” is hazy with a relatively slow tempo while “Squeeze” is upbeat and punctuated throughout with short vocal stabs. Take a look at the artwork and stream samples of both songs below.

Graphics “The Provoker”

UK producer Graphics caught our ears last year with his introspective and deeply danceable take on techno-infused bass music, as illustrated on the track “Fine Yarn,” which we debuted back in August. Graphics’ latest offering, “The Provoker,” is still meditatively reflective, but finds the young producer reaching a new level of immaterialness as he operates without the constraints demanded by the club-centric spectrum of dance music. A bonus track from Graphics’ recently released “There’s a Way Back” single (artwork above) on GETME!, the song’s beat stutters while chaotic percussive noises flit over background synths, a simple melody, and a vocal sample of a French child. It’s all part of a fine start to what’s looking to be a busy 2012 for the up-and-coming beatmaker, who has another EP, Mama Grizzlies, on the way later this month via Made to Play. (via FADER)

Mala at Work on New “Cuban” Album

In a recent article on Clash, the online culture hub reports that dubstep diety Mala (whose XLR8R podcast we still can’t stop listening to) is finishing up an album he recorded with Cuban musicians. Apparently, the DJ/producer was coerced by Gilles Peterson, who has been traveling to the island nation for several years, to make the trip. As the Brownswood label head and BBC radio host explains, “I basically took Mala over [to Cuba] with me and we spent the first few days recording Latin rhythms and we took those back to the UK and he’s been working on that. We went back and made the album, but when I was making the album I would be in studio one and all the musicians would come through and play a straightforward type of album. Then when they were done with me they would basically go through and see him and he would do his interpretation of the Cuban thing for his own album, which is going to be coming out in February.” Peterson went on to say he has another chapter of his own Havana Cultura project in the works, which will reportedly drop around the end of February or beginning of March. Needless to say, word of a new full-length LP from Mala has our attention absolutely piqued, and we’ll be bringing you any and all updates once they arrive.

Boy Friend “Egyptian Wrinkle (The Whendays Remix)”

Stockholm-based nostalgia dealers The Whendays have shared this bouncy remix for Austin duo Boy Friend‘s “Egyptian Wrinkle” single from its forthcoming LP of the same name. The production has the same kind of heavy compression and foggy atmospheres that colored the Swedish outfit’s self-titled EP for Cascine, with a bit of extra ethereal drift courtesy of the Texan vocalists. Still, you could probably throw this one on the stereo towards the end of the night to keep any dance party going. Look for Egyptian Wrinkle to drop on February 6 via Italian label Hell, Yes!.

Patten Shares ‘GLAQJO XAACSSO’ Edits, Debuts Live A/V Show

The anonymous UK producer behind one of our favorite albums of 2011, Patten will follow up the release of his GLAQJO XAACSSO LP via No Pain in Pop—not to mention threesubsequentremix EPs—with a repressing of the stellar album that includes fresh edits of the material by the artist himself. You can stream and download two of those cuts, “V” and “IX,” below, and pre-order your copy of the album here. And if you’re in the London area, make sure to catch Patten’s first audio/visual performance at Camp on January 19, the details of which can be found here.

Check Out a New Track, Video, and Interview From Wiley

Eccentric UK grime figure Wiley has a handful of new bits to share with us before the release of Evolve or Be Extinct on January 19—including a new track, video, and interview. Just yesterday, the MC/producer spoke with Time Out London about bringing back his club night, Eskimo Dance, this Saturday, the mainstream success of grime, and The Beatles. Wiley also shared a new tune from his forthcoming album, called “Highs and Lows,” which you can listen to, along with the odd workout-inspired music video for his new “Boom Blast” single, below.
