Red Bull Music Academy 2012 to be Held in New York

Merely a couple of months after Red Bull Music Academy finished up its 2011 proceedings in Madrid, the annual music conference has announced it will hold its 2012 courses in New York City. Musicians, DJs, and producers interested in applying will have to wait until February 2 to do so, but you can check out more info on the upcoming event here. You can also watch a video about the application process here, and listen to a mix of music that was created during RBMA 2011 in Madrid below.

Gavin Herlihy “In Space & In Time”

Leeds-based producer Gavin Herlihy is set to drop a new EP, Endless Feeling, later this month. Here, we have a non-EP track from the burgeoning artist, “In Space & In Time,” which finds Herlihy putting together an elongated excursion full of summery, disco-tinged vibes. The deep, catchy bassline and steady, percussive beat chug along as layers of spacey melodies and cascading synth runs fill the spaces in between, allowing the tune to flow with considerable ease. Weaving in and out of warm sonic spaces for over seven minutes, “In Space & In Time” manages to maintain just the right touch of rhythm and movement to keep bodies bouncing and heads bobbing. Following the release of Endless Feeling (out on vinyl January 20 and digitally February 1), Culprit already has plans to release a corresponding remix EP on February 6, which will feature reworks from a few like-minded producers, including Larse and Visionquest’s Shaun Reeves.

DJ Q Releases Mix CD, Readies 12″ for Unknown to the Unknown

Unknown to the Unknown has been dropping singles at an almost unfathomably rapid pace as of late, and for its next release, the label (which is run in part by DJ Haus of Hot City) has tapped bassline don DJ Q for two new tracks, which will serve as a follow-up to the imprint’s first-ever mix CD, DJ Q enters the Unknown. The mix CD—which you can stream a preview of and order here—was released earlier in the month, but the “All Junglist” b/w “Rocky” single won’t see a release for a couple more weeks. We’ve gone ahead and grabbed a preview of the forthcoming two-track 12″, which you’ll find along with the artwork below.

The Weeknd “High For This (Sibian & Faun Bootleg)”

By this point, the XLR8R staff is likely to approach most any rework of Toronto R&B darling The Weeknd with a certain amount of trepidation, but this bootleg remix from Montreal duo Sibian & Faun manages to strike just the right chord. On it, we find the two producers continuing to delve into the world of completely R&B-indebted bass music, which they showed an aptitude for on their recent Numbers single, “I’m Sorry”. This bass-laden refix serves as the first release from Sibian & Faun’s freshly minted label, which they’ve decided to operate under the name Half & Half. No word yet on what else may be in store from the imprint, but we’d be surprised if the future didn’t hold more soulful pieces of gushing, moody bass like this one.

Locked Groove Rooted EP

After first appearing on Scuba’s 2011 DJ Kicks contribution with “Drowning,” Locked Groove has added two new selections alongside that heavy-handed track and given us the first full glimpse into his abilities via his debut EP, Rooted.

Scuba’s Hotflush imprint initially seems like a strange fit for the Belgian producer, whose style is much more based in the realms of deep house and undulating techno than the UK-indebted, post-dubstep sounds often found on the label. But as Rooted unfolds, an underlying soulfulness becomes apparent, and Locked Groove’s place amongst the Hotflush roster starts to make sense. Opening the effort up is the title track, a nine-minute endeavor which begins in a more celestial region of house, floating along this way for a few minutes. Gradually, the track moves into much heavier territory as a deep, four-on-the-floor pattern peaks through, followed closely by an incomprehensible amalgamation of distorted vocal samples and an overdriven arpeggio. Closing number “Change” moves in a similar fashion, taking a bit longer to reach its groove, but again staying sunken in the big drums, monstrous percussion, and thick stabs for the entirety of its run (except for a brief moment of rest used to highlight a slowed-down excerpt from a Derrick May interview).

Perhaps the most striking aspect of the Rooted EP is its consistent sonic theme—almost every sound is intentionally overdriven, giving each track a crunchiness that exists somewhere between Blawan’s bombastic drums and Gerry Read’s gritty house productions. This is especially true on the aforementioned “Drowning,” a song which relies almost completely on its programmed rhythms and overheated textures to push it along. Locked Groove even goes so far as to add an unwavering, high-pitched tone, something that’s only faintly audible above it all. Whether this is a result of his massive culmination of distortions, or simply an attempt to render the tune even more eccentric, it certainly works, and it is details like this that make the entire Rooted EP a rather impressive debut.

Babe Rainbow “Greed (LOL Boys Remix)”

“Greed,” a tune from Babe Rainbow‘s 2011 Endless Path EP, has been resurrected for a seven-track remix endeavor set to drop on January 11, courtesy of Mishka (artwork above). To help spread the word, the powers that be are passing around this remix from LA/Montreal duo LOL Boys. Thankfully, the pair of producers morphs the slow-burning hip-hop track into something much more oriented for the dancefloor, delving out big bass drums, stuttering hand claps, and dizzying synths while an army of icy percussion moves in increasingly intricate patterns. Joy Orbison and Boddika Collaboration Finally Gets a Release Date

It should come as no surprise that the collaboration between Joy Orbison and Instra:mental’s Boddika resulted in one of 2011’s most inescapable club tunes, “Swims.” By the same token, it should also come as no real surprise that the man behind “Sicko Cell,” another 2011 track that was hyped and revered long before its release, has made us wait so long to get our hands on a physical copy of his latest output. All that’s set to change with the news that Swamp81 has plans to finally drop “Swims” in 12″ format later this month. The vinyl-only release (artwork above) will come complete with a more “chord-driven” version of the track as its b-side, ensuring both sides of the forthcoming 12″ will be just as likely to serve as essential dancefloor burners. You can pre-order the record here before its official release on January 16. For those that need a reminder as to what the two producers collaborative efforts resulted in, we’ve thrown a stream of “Swims” below. (via FACT)

Ramp Reaches 50 Releases, Preps Compilation

Since its founding back in 2005, the Ramp imprint has consistently been a place for quality productions from the UK and beyond. Between its early releases from the likes of Count Bass D, Zomby, and FaltyDL to its more recent efforts from burgeoning artists such as Teeth and Gerry Read, it is easy to see why Ramp has managed to flourish. And with that, the label has reached its 50th release, a benchmark it is celebrating with the release of a retrospective compilation, Ramp 50 (artwork above). A full tracklist has not been made available yet for the comp (which is set to drop March 12), but we’re told it will contain highlights from the independent label’s back catalog, including cuts from SBTRKT, Ras G, FaltyDL, and Zomby. Best of all, the collection will be available at a discounted price so as to make Ramp’s music more accessible than ever. In the meantime, the label is also set to drop another compilation of tracks, making a number of tunes from the vinyl-only Brainmath sub-label available digitally for the first time. No tracklist is available for that release either, but considering that Brainmath’s discography is comprised of contributions from top-notch producers like Untold, SBTRKT, James Blake, and Brackles, it will certainly be something to look out for.

Luke Vibert Unearths Unreleased Tracks on New Album as Plug

Ninja Tune has announced plans to release an LP of previously unreleased drum & bass tracks from Luke Vibert‘s long-dormant Plug moniker. The name Plug has only ever had one LP attributed to it, Drum & Bass for Papa, a record which proved rather influential when it originally saw release back in 1996. Now, more than 15 years later, Vibert is finally set to issue a follow-up to that album, Back On Time, an LP made up of 12 tracks which were lying dormant on a few DAT tapes until they were rediscovered by their creator some time last year. This time-travelling excursion through sample-infused, off-the-wall jungle hits the streets on January 24, but in the meantime, you can check the artwork and tracklist below, and head here to grab a free download of album cut “Feeling So Special.”

Tracklist:
01 Scar City
