Graintable “April O’Neil”

The burgeoning beat scene of the Pacific Northwest is so flush with high-quality producers crafting a range of bass and hip-hop music that Seattle-based record label Car Crash Set is already churning through a second cycle of EPs for its No Northwest series, which showcases artists from the region. After dropping five EPs for the series from various West Coasters in 2011, C/C/S’ next No Northwest release will be a split EP from Portland’s Graintable and Seattle’s Kimnusico Trio, which is set for release on January 17. “April O’Neil,” the first track from the record, is a mellow slice of leftfield hip-hop where crooning female oohs and soft synths contrast sharply with the crisp staccato of the song’s fast-paced percussion.

Influential UK producer Zed Bias (a.k.a. Maddslinky a.k.a. The Phantom “Colossus”

Warsaw-based DJ and producer The Phantom (a.k.a. Bartosz Kruczynski) is starting 2012 off with a bang, dropping his second EP, aptly titled The Phantom EP 2, which features this song, “Colossus,” and three other bass-driven dance tracks. The instrumental “Colossus” features a heavy low end that draws from grime, while the song’s retro-sounding and occasionally atmospheric synth lines more closely recall ’80s electro-funk. The EP will be the first release of the year for the consistently solid Silverback imprint, and is due for a vinyl-only release on January 16. Take a look at the artwork and tracklisting while listening to a preview stream of the EP, all of which can be found after the jump.

Peaking Lights 936 Remixed

It was nearly impossible to read XLR8R during the latter parts of 2011 without seeing some bit of ecstatic praise for the LA-based experimental dance music label 100% Silk; we’ve been more or less hooked on the record hub’s output since day one. Elsewhere on the internet, you’ve likely found heaps of accolade for sister imprint Not Not Fun, especially in regards to the 936 LP it released for Madison, WI husband-and-wife duo Peaking Lights. So, one might assume that the 936 Remixed EP is the end product of a handful of 2011’s most exciting artists coalescing into 25 minutes of top-shelf dancefloor sounds, and that would be wholly accurate.

Ital’s rework of the drifty, sun-soaked “Marshmellow Yellow” easily takes the prize for the best remix. The Brooklyn producer’s knack for sample manipulation is on full display here, as he builds most of his track from chopped elements of the excellent original and beefs up the reformatted tune ever so slightly with a solid dance rhythm, funky bass pattern, and some whispy atmospherics. And even though “Marshmellow Yellow (Ital Remix)” works out its sticky groove with barely any reprieve, there are more than enough sonic subtleties interwoven throughout its lengthy run time to keep your attention from waning.

The remaining three productions opt to use less of Peaking Lights’ source material, though the results are no less interesting. “Shine for U (Innergaze Remix)” is a cool, electro-tinged jam that soaks its elements—vocal samples, drum-machine loops, bulbous basslines, dark synth tones—in spacey delay before coasting along for four and a half minutes, and Xander Harris’ “Birds of Paradise” remix boasts a syrupy kind of house music that still remains engaging, bubbly, and readily danceable. The only real misstep on 936 Remixed comes from Cuticle, whose version of “Tiger Eyes” is a bit unsettling. Even as it builds to its synth-laden epoch, the sloppy composition just crosses over the fine line between pleasantly loose and irkingly off-kilter. Thankfully, this record offers plenty of other options for DJs and electronic music lovers looking to score an eclectic mix of inventive dance tunes.

Listen to a Track from Ital’s Forthcoming ‘Hive Mind’ LP

One of the 10 best new artists from 2011 and the producer behind our #39 favorite track of last year, Brooklyn’s Ital will release his debut LP, Hive Mind, next month via Planet Mu, but has leaked one of its lengthy tunes prior to that. Below, you can stream the 10-minute excursion into nebulous, experimental house music called “Floridian Void.” (via Mixmag)

Todd Terje “Swing Star Pt. 1”

On “Swing Star Pt. 1,” Norwegian producer Todd Terje travels deep into the realm of space disco, evoking the theme not only through the song’s astral title, but also via his use of the kinds of futuristic science-fiction sounds that were popular in late-’70s disco music, not to mention the fact that his floating arpeggiations get, well, downright spacey. The retro sounds come courtesy of the analog ARP2600 synthesizer, which lends its name to Terje’s forthcoming EP, It’s the Arps, on which “Swing Star Pt. 1” appears. The EP comes out through the Smalltown Supersound label on January 16, but for now, you can find the artwork and tracklisting after the jump.

Grimes “Genesis”

The first leak to arrive from Canadian songstress Grimes‘ forthcoming Visions LP for 4AD, “Oblivion,” showcased the kind of ethereal beat-pop that record holds, a sound which “Genesis” expands upon even further. A bouncing bassline and a crunchy rhythm provide the backbone around which the airy vocals, Eastern-influenced synth melodies, and simple piano riffs swirl. It’s a playful and surprisingly endearing track, and effectively excites us even more for the release of Grimes’ new album on February 21. (via Pitchfork)

Tropics Self-Releases New Album

British musician Chris Ward (a.k.a. Tropics), who put out both an EP and an LP on Planet Mu last year, has just self-released a 10-song album of previously unavailable material. The record contains a combination of new compositions, b-sides, and unreleased works, including another remix of “Mouves” and an alternate take of “After Visiting,” a track from Parodia Flare. Ward is offering up the collection of warm and atmospheric tunes, titled Nautical Clamour, via Bandcamp, or you can simply stream the tracks in the player below.

RareBit “Emergence”

We first heard the technicolor beats of multi-talented artist Justin Hopkins (a.k.a. RareBit) back in May of 2011 when he unveiled his debut record, The Destroyer EP. Hopkins will drop his follow-up album on February 28 via LA imprint Non Projects, and sent this track ahead of the LP’s release. “Emergence” exhibits the kind of expansive soundscapes and eclectic rhythms featured on Daizo (pictured above), the tracklist for which you can check out after the jump.
