Download a Bunch of Free Tunes from Butterz

High-energy East London grime label Butterz is known to periodically offer up huge ZIP files of rare and unreleased tracks for free download. Yesterday, that string continued with the release of its Winter ZIP, a massive collection comprising nearly 50 tracks from Terror Danjah, D.O.K., Mr Mitch, Royal-T, and more. The ZIP, which comes in at nearly 1GB in size, can be downloaded here.

In other Butterz news, Royal-T has put together a 2011 Yearbook Mix, which weaves together nearly every original track and remix the Southampton producer released in the past year, including remixes of Katy B, Dizzee Rascal, and Joker. The mix can be streamed or downloaded below.

With this new-found freedom, Houle is said to have put together one of his most adventurous outings to date with the eight tracks that comprise Undercover. No audio is available yet to help us figure out where Houle has elected to take his synth-driven techno next, but you can peep the album artwork and tracklist below before the album drops March 5.

Ssaliva “Drugged Out Quest”

Belgium’s François Boulanger (a.k.a. Cupp Cave) is set to release RZA (pictured above), his second EP as Ssaliva, via the Vlek imprint on January 16. The eight-track 10″ record follows the multi-faceted producer’s debut cassette EP for Matthewdavid’s Leaving Records from last February. Featured here, “Drugged Out Quest”—an outtake from the RZA sessions—is a hazy shuffle through a sort of alternate hip-hop universe. These slow, lo-fi beats retain a warm tape sound, with laid-back percussion washed over by ambient, Boards of Canada-esque hums. Ssaliva’s forthcoming RZA EP is available to preview and pre-order from Vlek now, here.

Drexciya Journey of the Deep Sea Dweller I

Drexciya, the mythical aquatic civilization generated by the works of (the sadly deceased) James Stinson and Gerald Donald, was one of the most original concepts to come from Detroit techno. A mixed-media project that springs forth from the interstices between the music, the labels, and the liner notes, Drexciya was more than just a techno production outfit. It was an entire immersive science-fiction narrative about an underwater civilization descended from the offspring of pregnant America-bound African slaves thrown overboard during labor on the middle passage. After genetically evolving, the Drexciyans dedicated themselves to a limitless hi-tech campaign of covert warfare against the powers that be.

Heady stuff, to be sure, yet while the narrative played out across a variety of media, the real star in Drexciya’s work was the music. Taking the aquaboogie of P-Funk and combining it with the the abrasive tone poetry of Kraftwerk, Drexciya created a sound that was familiar but also totally alien. It was harsh music from a hard city characterized by the strange combined feeling of claustrophobia and agoraphobia that only the expanse of underwater depths can induce.

Until now, getting a hold of material from the Drexciyan universe has been relatively difficult. Sure, the later albums released on CD are widely available, but the group’s early material has remained elusively all-vinyl and has only been available on the second-hand market. Furthering the problem is the sheer amount (and deliberate vagueness) of Drexciyan releases, which provides newcomers few entry points into the outfit’s expansive catalog. Thankfully, Clone Records has figured a way to rectify both of these problems with their recently released retrospective, Journey of the Deep Sea Dweller I. Comprised of 13 tracks, 12 of which have seen prior release, it’s the best introduction so far to the duo’s music.

The compilation is sequenced in a fashion that defies a traditional timeline, instead creating an organization of events centered around the music. This is how we imagine Stinson intended the music be listened to. The tracks themselves don’t work in a linear fashion, but instead offer an infinite recombinant potential of possible moments in the Drexciyan universe. Things start off with the appropriate “Welcome to Drexciya.” As good a starting point as any, the track offers random pulses of sonar shot over a drumless bed of rapid arpeggios and Super Nintendo chords. From there, the compilation moves through seminal moments in the group’s catalog: there’s the tidal surge of “Wavejumper,” the squid-like propulsion of “Hydro Theory,” and the laid-back submarine G-funk of “Bubble Metropolis.” Along the way, the compilation touches on the many facets of the group’s sound, from dark techno bangers like “Darthouven Fish Men” and “Sea Quake” to the comparably mellow “Dehydration” and “Aquarazorda”

Of course, if you’re a rabid Drexciya fan, you’re likely already well acquainted with the majority of the tracks on this release. For those so taken with the duo’s work, Clone has offered up “Unknown Journey I,” an unreleased track from the sizable archive of shelved Drexciyan material. While it’s unfortunate that not more of that library found its way onto this release, the track is nevertheless a serious cut in its own right with massive, war-like tribal toms providing a low-end backdrop to the drone of a synthesized choir and bizarre misfiring mechanical noises.

Whether you’re an old fan of Drexciya or you’ve just arrived late to the party, Journey of the Deep Sea Dweller I is about as close to an essential compilation as you’re going to get. Even fans that have all the group’s material could stand to benefit by picking this up for the sheer quality of the digital remastering of tracks that have, up to now, only been available on vinyl.

Luciano Readies New Mix CD

Cadenza label head and renowned minimal-house DJ Luciano has announced plans to release a new mix, Vagabundos, later this month. Named after the concept which incorporated “decadent dress-up, wild dancers cavorting in amongst the crowds, and imaginative programming” into his live sets over the past year, Vagabundos marks the native Chilean’s first official recorded mix to surface since his excellent contribution to the Fabric series dropped back in 2008. You can check the artwork and interestingly diverse (but somewhat complicated) tracklist below before the the collection officially drops on January 30.

The Morning Clouds “A Walk Home (LA Remix by Sad City)”

While Glaswegian producer Sad City doesn’t have a lot of material under his belt yet, he certainly makes the work he does craft count. This expansive and ethereal remix of “A Walk Home” by mellow rocker The Morning Clouds (pictured above) stretches the track to over 10 minutes in length, removing the straight-ahead indie aspects of the original and transforming the not-quite-shoegaze song into a bona fide celestial dreamscape. Airy vocals haunt the last half of the piece, the hi-hats melting into blissful static, with only subtle snaps and a soft kick drum keeping the track from slipping completely into ambient noise.

Listen to The 2 Bears’ ‘Work’ EP

Last month, we posted the music video for The 2 Bears‘ “Work,” which featured the British duo’s exploits through working-class London. The Hot Chip side project has now released a remix EP via Southern Fried to accompany that track, featuring mixes by Toddla T, Oliver $, and more. This release precedes The 2 Bears’ debut full-length, Be Strong, coming January 30 via Southern Fried/DFA, and will soon be joined by a couple more remix EPs that DFA has curated—featuring more versions from St. Etienne and The 2 Bears themselves and dropping on January 24 and February 7, respectively. The first Work EP (the Southern Fried one, not the DFA ones, mind you) is streaming below, and fans should note that the band is also offering an advance download of an album track, “Time in Mind”, on its Facebook.

Kevin Saunderson Readies ‘In the House’ Mix for Defected

British house label Defected is set to release a new In the House mix featuring Detroit techno giant and originator Kevin Saunderson. The DJ/producer remains close to his Motor City roots throughout his contribution to the series; Carl Craig, Robert Hood, Kenny Larkin, and several Saunderson projects—including a progged-out 2011 remix of the Inner City classic “Good Life”—all appear on the compilation. Saunderson, whose Inner City project brought together Detroit techno with Chicago house and exported them to the masses in the late ’80s and early ’90s, continues to seek that kind of crossover between the two genres on his 2012 mix. Kevin Saunderson In the House will be released on January 30, but you can check out the full tracklist, as well as preview a sample of the lengthy DJ set, below. (via Resident Advisor)
