Lawrence “Kurama”

Veteran house producer and Dial Records boss Lawrence has been making music for more than a decade now, and at this point, his production style can essentially be boiled down into one simple concept: deep, thoughtful tunes. Granted, after all these years, it’s something he does very well, and “Kurama,” his latest single and first outing on DJ Koze’s Pampa imprint, finds Lawrence maintaining his usual high standards. Yes, it’s minimal, but it’s also rather well done.

“Kurama” was inspired by the mountain in Kyoto of the same name, a serene locale which Lawrence attempts to encapsulate in his 10-plus-minute track. The drums are simple and subdued, initially serving as little more than a metronome and only building slightly as the song proceeds. The tune’s real beauty lies in its synths, which are light, airy, and vaguely recall the peaceful feeling one might expect to find in a Japanese temple. (In all fairness, we haven’t actually spent a ton of time in Japanese temples, but the sonic zen of “Kurama” represents the vibe we’d like to find if we did.)

On the flip side, “Oolong High” was made with a different sort of Asian experience in mind—namely, a drink which combines cold Oolong tea with Japanese Shochu liquor. While it’s not exactly a party cut, perhaps this imbibed inspiration is the guiding force behind the song’s more upbeat feel, most notably in it’s peppier percussion. As the track proceeds, Lawrence folds in a smattering of the airy pads that colored “Kurama,” but “Oolong High” never relaxes along the same lines as its partner on the a-side, even with its additional runtime, which eventually clocks in at nearly 12 minutes. This one is deep, but it’s also designed for the dancefloor.

Aeroc “For Sake”

It was back in 2004 that Geoff White (a.k.a. Aeroc) issued his debut full-length, Viscous Solid, through Ann Arbor’s Ghostly imprint. Now, seven years later, the once-Ohio-based producer (last we checked, he had hopped across the pond and landed in Barcelona) has quietly returned to the home of his well-received debut with a new, 11-track LP entitled R+B=?. If “For Sake” is any indication, this new outing finds White picking up about where Viscous Solid left off, folding open sonic spaces and rich electronics into his melodic, at times jazzy, acoustic guitar-led productions.

During his last US tour, London-based DJ/producer Bok Bok (a.k.a. Alex Sushon) sat down for a chat with the folks from Scion A/V. In this quick clip, he discusses the origins of his Night Slugs label, the current state of the UK music scene, and how his music doesn’t fit into any one genre in particular.

Listen to a Clip of a New Burial Track

It’s not often that we use a spot in our daily news feed to share a radio rip of a quarter of a whole track, but, you know, this is Burial we’re talking about. You can stream about two minutes of a lengthy, unreleased cut by the dubstep demigod, called “Ashtray Wasp,” by fishing through this podcast of Hyperdub’s monthly show on Rinse FM, which first aired last night. Rumor has it this bit of audio is lifted from the b-side of Burial’s forthcomingKindred EP for Hyperdub.

Larcier “Sometimes I See (Vocal Mix)”

Proudly Parisian imprint Cracki, known primarily for its parties in derelict factories and an abandoned train station, dropped its debut release this past Sunday, a piece of soulful house by fellow Frenchman Larcier. “Sometimes I See” (artwork above) is minimal and groovy, with warbling synth layers and a simple, bouncing bassline. Larcier rejects the over-use of production gimmicks, using only subtle panning as his effect of choice, while the vulnerability of the tender, high-pitched vocals fits perfectly with the extended pauses in this classically deep-sounding tune.

XLR8R x Beatport: Hackman

Over the past few months, XLR8R has been curating a special set of charts for Beatport. UK producer Hackman has been making regular appearances on our site over the past two-plus years, thanks largely to his unique, drum-heavy take on funky-influenced house sounds. He can also be counted on to drop a steady stream of new releases, the most recent of which is the “Agree to Disagree” b/w “Sunburst” single on PTN, a precursor to his forthcoming debut full-length, As Above, So Below. Before the album drops early next year, Hackman has put together this list of 10 of his current favorite tunes, a sampling that includes dancefloor gems from several of his UK contemporaries.

1. Trickski “Wilderness (Genius Of Time Remix)” (Suol)
2. Presk “Slick Rick” (Ten Thousand Yen)
3. Hackman “Close” (Greco-Roman)
4. Maya Jane Coles “Parallel Worlds” (Hypercolour)
5. Behling “Without You” (Futureboogie Recordings)
6. Gerry Read “We Are” (Fourth Wave)
7. Hackman “Agree To Disagree” (PTN)
8. Dauwd “What’s There” (Pictures Music)
9. Steffen Kirchhoff “The Beast In Me” (KI Records)
10. El Kid “Kachinja” (Left_Blank)

XLR8R’s Best of 2011: Videos

The easiest way to capture XLR8R‘s attention with a music video in 2011 was to merely have an original idea and at least a semblance of production value, a task that often proved more difficult than it might seem. With the growing number of found-footage reappropriations posing as visual-art pieces, it became increasingly difficult to get excited about the loads of videos that inevitably filtered into view. But that’s not to say there weren’t a sizable handful of clips that did actually pique our senses. Between the beautifully shot imagery, unique storylines, compelling animations, vintage techniques, and baffling special effects, we discovered some true artists who are still out there fighting the good fight for quality film production. Here are our top 10 favorites of that bunch.

10. John Maus “Believer”

9. SBTRKT “Wildfire (feat. Little Dragon)”

8. Com Truise “Brokendate”

7. M83 “Midnight City”

6. Fatima Al Qadiri “Vatican Vibes”

5. Omar-S “Who’s in Key?”

4. Tensnake “Something About You”

3. Battles “My Machines (feat. Gary Numan)”

2. Phaseone “Sugar”

1. Samo Sound Boy “Shuffle Code”

Stavrogin “Run Down”

London-based newcomer Stavrogin (a.k.a Theo Darton-Moore), a recent addition to the B.YRSLF Division roster, is yet another English teenage beatmaker with a knack for bass-music production. That said, the upstart producer’s sparse, slow-motion take on the sound does set him apart from the rest of the increasingly crowded field. “Run Down,” the first track from Darton-Moore’s forthcoming Reflections EP (artwork above), is a mellow piece of warped 2-step with a heaving bassline and diced-up, R&B-esque vocal samples. The EP is out now exclusively on Boomkat, but will be made available via Bandcamp on December 19, and through all major digital music retailers in late December.

Video: Azari & III “Reckless (With Your Love)”

Canadian house quartet Azari & III certainly knows how to make the most out of its small discography of infectious club tunes, and continues its efforts with a forthcoming 12″ of remixes of “Reckless (With Your Love)” and a new music video, to boot. Tiga’s Turbo imprint will drop the new two-track record, which features a remix by the label boss and Russian DJ/producer Proxy, on February 12. Before then, indulge in the slick visuals fashioned by directors Geoge Vale and Alphonse Alixander Lanza III, above, then check out Tiga’s remix of the single, as well as the upcoming record’s artwork, below.
