Sun Glitters ” The Wind Caresses Her Hair (Discuss Remix)”

The summery title of this track, not to mention Luxembourg artist Sun Glitters’ moniker, may contradict the brooding bass and thumping beats of the original, which was first released in July. This winter update of the track by Puerto Rican producer Discuss, from The Wind Caresses Her Hair, The Remix EP, isn’t especially sunny either, although it amplifies the atmospheric quality of the track, puts more emphasis on a reworked, live-sounding drum pattern, and transforms it into a soaring, post-rock take on the song’s melodramatic chillwave. The remix EP, which can be streamed in full after the jump, was released yesterday and also features a version of the tune from Albert Swarm, whose own Held EP will also soon be receiving the remix treatment, including a contribution from Sun Glitters himself.

Gerry Read “All by Myself” b/w “What a Mess”

How is it possible that Gerry Read is only 19 years old? While many producers’ output is said to harken back to classic Chicago and Detroit, that usually amounts to little more than some vintage drum samples and a vague sense of nostalgia. Gerry Read, on the other hand, has spent 2011 turning out one well-refined house tune after another, assembling a collection truly deep tracks that make the young UK beatsmith sound like a grizzled veteran. “All by Myself” b/w “What a Mess” is his latest offering, the final piece of his trilogy for the Fourth Wave imprint, and another example of the man’s baffling musical maturity.

True to form, “All by Myself” is a propulsive house cut that skimps on the melody and leans hard on a thick, somehwat muddy low end. It’s dark and dubby, but the song is actually cleaner than the selections offered on his previous Fourth Wave singles, toning down the murk in favor of some legitimate funk, courtesy of both the lengthy vocal and what sounds like an organ sample. Even the drums are lower in the mix, as a repeated cymbal is the most prominent percussive element, aside from the song’s crunchy basslines. “All By Myself” definitely sounds like Chicago, but it has nothing to do with acid house; this is much deeper.

Those looking for bigger drums will find them on the single’s flip side, as “What a Mess” gets stompy while maintaining the funky feel of “All by Myself.” The vocals have been whittled down into an unintelligible warble, but the track still has plenty of soul, not to mention nods to disco and a prominent jazz sensibility via the guitar melody that noodles its way through the proceedings. More than anything, “What a Mess” displays a nice sense of swing, even when—as expected— things get muddy. Somehow, Read manages to weave in dirty and distorted sounds without killing the vibe, and that’s what sets his work apart.

!K7 Announces New Compilation of DJ-Kicks Exclusives

Each time !K7 commissions a new mix as part of its venerable DJ-Kicks series, it requires the artist involved to include an exclusive piece of previously unreleased original music. The last time !K7 compiled these exclusive tracks into a single collection was in 2005, when it assembled songs by Kruder & Dorfmeister, Carl Craig, and Thievery Corporation, among others. Now, with 14 more mixes under its belt since the last compilation, !K7 decided 2012 would be a good time for a second installment of compiled exclusives. The forthcoming record, simply titled DJ-Kicks The Exclusives, will contain tracks from a varied group of artists, including one by Photek & Kuru, who will be mixing the next chapter of the series. The compilation will be released on February 21, but check out the artwork above, and spy the tracklisting below.

Visionist “Firstsight”

Now through Christmas, Brixton-based producer Visionist (a.k.a Louis Carnell) will be giving away a free tune each week. The first of the three tunes is “Firstsight,” a heavy track with syncopated, garage-influenced percussion, pitch-bent vocal snippets referencing the artist’s name, and an odd and eerie piano riff looming in the background. Be sure to catch Carnell’s other holiday gifts the next two weeks of 2011, and look for upcoming releases on the 502 and Keysound imprints in 2012.

Minus Releases Debut LP by Jon Gaiser’s New VOID Moniker

German techno auteur Jon Gaiser has just released a brand-new LP under the moniker VOID via Minus. Called No Sudden Movements, the nine-song album is said to “[traverse] ambient soundscapes and downtempo rhythms, seeking warmth from a sparser, gentler sound,” as opposed to the more propulsive and incendiary club music Gaiser is known for. You can check out exactly what VOID’s No Sudden Movements record sounds like, as well as take a look at its shorthand track titles, below, and read a short Q&A with the artist about his new record here. And if you’d like to see Gaiser debut his live VOID performance with Plastikman in Manchester, London, and Glasgow, you can find more info on that here.

Tycho Plans North American Tour

Scott Hansen (a.k.a. Tycho) is wrapping up 2011 in fine fashion following the release of Dive on Ghostly last month. (We were certainly pleased to see his song “Hours” snag the #7 slot on XLR8R’sTop Downloads of 2011 list.) As it turns out, he’s looking to begin 2012 in a similarly active fashion, taking his live show on the road for a string of dates across the US and Canada. Traveling with a full live band and armed with an array of what are being described as “sensory-engulfing visuals” (remember, Hansen also does stellar graphic design as the head of ISO50), Tycho will hit the road in mid-January and traverse the continent over the course of three weeks. Check the full list of tour dates below, and, if you haven’t already, take a look at the in-depth feature we published just before Dive was released.

XLR8R’s Best of 2011: Podcasts

Every Tuesday, XLR8R adds a new chapter to its ever-expanding cache of podcasts, always in the form of an exclusive mix from an artist who’s piqued our collective interest. The list of podcast participants is a varied one, with relative unknowns delivering DJ sessions right alongside established producers and outright legends. Similarly diverse are the sounds represented, with some DJs aiming directly for the dancefloor with pulsing house and techno, others assembling ambient sound pieces, and some artists throwing caution to the wind and mixing things up in an indescribable fashion. Yet, regardless of what it sounds like, the debut of the XLR8R podcast has become one of the most anticipated events on our site each week. Selecting our favorites from 2011 was no easy task, but these were the podcast mixes we found ourselves coming back to again and again.

Yosi Horikawa “Wandering”

Fresh from a stint at this year’s RBMA in Madrid, Japanese producer Yosi Horikawa has passed along “Wandering,” a song from the forthcoming debut LP he plans to drop sometime next year. This track serves as the perfect introduction to the budding producer’s sound, which combines field recordings, extremely detailed drums, and vast soundscapes, ultimately ending up somewhere between the beat-scene and electro-acoustic schools of production. At first listen, it’s not surprising to learn that “Wandering” was inspired by a trip to the woods (which you can catch a glimpse of in the photo above), even going as far as to derive a multitude of its sounds from that very same trip. If this tune is any indication, Horikawa’s take on electronic music is as unique as it is enticing, and one we hope we’ll be hearing a lot more of in the months to come.
