Nightwave Preps New EP for Fortified Audio

Hard-working UK tunesmith and recent RBMA participant Nightwave (you may remember her from this or this) has a fresh record in the works for the Glasgow-based Fortified Audio imprint, a four-track EP called—wait for it—Festivus. Yes, the producer’s forthcoming release is apparently inspired by Seinfeld, and will drop on the same day as her “Night Heat” 12″ for Unknown to the Unknown, December 26. Two records in one day? Go, Nightwave! You can check out the tracklist for the Festivus EP, along with some previews of the music, below.

Conforce “Shadows of the Invisible”

A couple weeks back, Dutch producer Conforce (a.k.a. Boris Bunnik) released Escapism (artwork above), his second full-length album. In line with his previous output on the esteemed Rush Hour and Clone imprints, Escapism offers 10 cuts of darkly melodic techno, including “Shadows of the Invisible.” The song doesn’t contains many overt bells and whistles, instead relying on machine-like efficiency and a robust, Detroit-style melodic sensibility. The drums are crisp, the bassline rumbles and rolls, and the vibe rises and falls with the track’s drawn-out melodies. Need something to keep the dancefloor pulsating at 3 a.m.? “Shadows of the Invisible” just might do the trick.

Goth-Trad Readies New LP

The Japanese stalwart of all things bass, Takeaki Maruyama (a.k.a. Goth-Trad), has announced plans to return to Mala’s Deep Medi imprint with a new LP, New Epoch. Anyone who would consider themselves a connoisseur of underground bass has at some point come across Maruyama’s work, which the man has been consistently churning out for around a decade. It appears that the veteran producer has no particular direction with which he approached his latest full-length, but rather he says of New Epoch, “I’m just doing my sound. I’ve been doing this style of music for almost ten years and I just say all this music is bass music. I’m putting a lot of variety into the new album. Some tunes are very techy, some tunes are much more experimental, a bit glitchy. There may be some more banging stuff. I’ve lots of ideas to keep moving with.” We’ll certainly be excited to hear the results when the LP drops on February 7 of next year. For now, you can peep the artwork and tracklist (which includes the tune “Babylon Fall,” released on an EP of the same name earlier this year) below.

Tracklist:
01 Man In the Maze
02 Departure
03 Cosmos
04 Airbreaker
05 Walking Together
06 Strangers
07 Babylon Fall Ft. Max Romeo

Actress “Rainy Dub” b/w “Faceless”

For an artist that had as big of a year as Actress did in 2010, it’s somewhat baffling how low of a profile London producer Darren Cunningham has kept in 2011. Granted, Actress did release a lukewarm 12″ via NonPlus+, remix a song for indie darling Panda Bear, and give away a handful of tracks via his Twitter account, but it all seemed to pale in comparison to his second album, Splazsh, and the response to the music was equally unmatched. We’d like to think that the current nature of the music world is to blame; fans can be prone to quickly gobbling up what’s put in front of them before moving on to the next ‘hot’ thing. Actress’ confrontational, sometimes long-winded style of techno certainly requires a dedicated and patient listener, almost to a fault. And his latest record, the “Rainy Dub” b/w “Faceless” 12″ for Honest Jon’s, continues to take those tendencies to new extremes.

To be blunt, listening to “Rainy Dub” is a chore. The track is roughly nine minutes of about four synth tones repeating a few variations of a very short loop as a bit of delay fills in the blanks. That is all. The b-side, “Faceless,” is, thankfully, far less stark in its minimalism and manages to make up quite a bit for what its partner on the flip side desperately lacks. It boasts the kind of stuff that makes for a satisfying Actress track: an oddly engaging bassline, a smattering of alien sound effects, loose melodic elements, and an overall air of tension and discomfort. It’s propulsive without sounding rushed; it’s coherent without making a whole lot of sense; it’s Actress looking over the edge of the deep end without the urge to jump. We hope to find Mr. Cunningham in a similar place the next time he makes a blip on our radar.

Lao “Papolin”

We’ve got quite the international tune for you here with the title track from Mexican producer Lao‘s new EP for the Ukranian Wicked Bass imprint, Papolin (artwork above). (Apparently, the love for percolating bass music can easily traverse the world.) Beginning in the depths of dark, percussive club sounds, Lao builds his track up to almost anthemic heights with a never-ending array of tuned rim shots and massive, housey synth stabs. “Papolin” comes complete with a few nods to the producer’s homeland, too, in the form of some deliciously Latin-sounding percussion and occasional Spanish phrases. We can’t really make out what’s being said, but it would be entirely appropriate if it all translated roughly to, “This track is hot. Let’s get to dancing.”

You can peep the intense packaging and tracklist for parts one and two below, and head here to listen to previews of the music, which is described in a press release as “some of the most dense, eerie, and evocative pieces ever recorded by Demdike Stare.” (via FACT)

XLR8R’s Best of 2011: Top Downloads

XLR8R‘s Downloads section is constantly growing, updated day after day with loads of free music by a wide array of talented artists from around the world. 2011 was no different, of course, and garnered some of the biggest tunes to hit our pages yet. Looking over our list of the top 100 most downloaded tracks from the past year, it’s hard not to spot a few trends.
