Buffalo Tide “Divine Lions”

On “Divine Lions,” Vancouver native Buffalo Tide meanders across various themes—pairing syncopated rhythms with novel samples, like practically inaudible background chatter and car horns. The ambient-leaning track leads Buffalo Tide’s four-song Arabia EP, which will be released on November 11 by UK collective and nascent record label BLBX. This track follows in the same vein as the producer’s edit of Capac that we offered up this summer, which can also be streamed with the rest of the Arabia EP on Buffalo Tide’s Soundcloud page, here.

Video: Cooly G “Landscapes (feat. Simbad)”

This piece of dreamy, bass-driven dance music—lifted from Cooly G‘s forthcoming single for Hyperdub—is paired with some equally dreamy and colorful images in this video for “Landscapes (feat. Simbad).” While the basslines pulse and the rhythms jump and ricochet off into the distance, psychedlic video feedback of the producer’s singing visage fills the screen with pinks, purples, and other warm hues. Look for Cooly G’s record to drop on November 7. (via FACT)

Permanent Vacation to Release Tiger & Woods Remix of Tensnake

Mysterious duo Tiger & Woods is set to drop another remix just weeks after leaking a free 15-song album full of its edit-intensive take on disco, house, funk, and soul, this time for German producer Permanent Vacation will release the single, “Need Your Lovin (Tiger & Woods Remix)” b/w “Need Your Lovin (Original Mix),” on November 25. Tensnake’s original disco-leaning track made its way onto the internet last year, but this will be its wax debut.

Listen to a New Mixtape by Brenmar

In conjunction with the release of his new Let’s Pretend EP (read our review here), Brooklyn-based DJ/producer Brenmar put together a mix of his signature high-energy, ghetto-fabulous club music. His penchants for old-school tunes and sultry R&B are marvelously combined with a Chicago flavor in the mix, which can be streamed and downloaded after the jump. Brenmar also spoke briefly with Opening Ceremony, who commissioned the mix, and will be heading across the pond later this month for a string of tour dates.

Fedbymachines “Drowning”

Netherlands-based producer Fedbymachines just released his debut this past August, a two-song EP on Warminal, and he’s already back with six more tracks that make up an EP scheduled to drop via Broken Bubble. On last month’s Undertow record, Fedbymachines lays down a bit of warm 2-step, chock full of ambient textures and distant vocal snippets. In all honesty, “Drowning” is a bit reminiscent of Burial, though with less attention on melody and drive and more of a focus on the lush, dreamy soundscapes that accompany his swinging rhythms.

XLR8R x Beatport: Untold

The Beatport sales charts are often dominated by the latest international club smashes, but its vault of music runs deep and covers a wide variety of artists and sounds, which is why XLR8R was asked back in September to curate a special two-week series of Beatport charts by some of our favorite DJs and producers. Following the positive response to that initial run, we’ve been asked to extend the charts through the end of the year, which will now be presented on a weekly basis. Kicking off this second round is charts is UK bass maestro Untold (a.k.a. Jack Dunning), who not only heads up the choice Hemlock recordings imprint, but is also responsible for a litany of dark, percussion-heavy tunes of his own that have been perking up dancefloors in recent years. Here, he’s put together a list of 10 tracks he’s currently feeling.

1. Eats Everything “The Size” (dirtybird)
2. Pangaea “Hex” (Hemlock Recordings)
3. dBridge “Dischord” (Disfigured Dubz)
4. Champion “Lighter VIP” (Formula)
5. Scuba “Adrenalin” (Hotflush Recordings)
6. Untold “Bones (Rockwell Remix)” (SSSSS)
7. Martyn “Popgun” (Brainfeeder)
8. MD2 “MD2.4.1” (MD2)
9. 2562 “Aquatic Family Affair (Extended Re-cut)” (When In Doubt)
10. Blawan “What You Do With What You Have” (R&S Records)

Five Minutes at Moogfest with M83

Easily the most breathtaking performance that took place at this year’s Moogfest in Asheville, NC (read our wrap-up here) was the stadium-sized explosion of driving synth-pop that M83 unleashed on the final night of the festival. It was awe-inspiring, to say the least, and further went to solidify how much we love Anthony Gonzalez’s latest double-LP, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, so we had to make sure to chat with the French-born producer while we had the chance. During our quick conversation, Gonzalez shared with us some insight as to why he’ll always be fascinated with childhood and explained how he doesn’t want everyone to love the music he makes.

XLR8R: The release of Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming seems to have been met with widespread acclaim, but there are still those that say making a double album was a bit self-indulgent. What do you think of comments like that?
M83: I mean, this is part of the game. You spend time on an album, and some people won’t like or won’t understand it. I’ve been making music more than 10 years, so I’m used to bad review and bad criticism. And that’s fine. I think it’s important for me to feel that some people really enjoy this album, but it’s also important for me to feel that there are some people who don’t like it. It’s good to not be loved by everyone.

What is it that you like about people not loving your music?
Well, it’s just a question of personality, you know? Sometimes you’re going to be moved by a song or not. It’s totally random. It’s what I like about being a musician and what I like about being a music listener: you respond to some melodies, and you don’t respond to other ones. That’s the game, yeah.

Throughout pretty much all of your work there’s an extreme focus on the idea of being a child and the exuberance of youth. Is that something that you’d ever see yourself growing out of?
I feel like it’s almost impossible for me to get away from my childhood and my teenage years. It’s part of myself, and writing music and composing songs about my past is the only way I’ve found to remember [those times]. It’s like a therapy almost, to write about it so I can remember it.

Are there any specific memories that were brought up when you made Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming?
Tons of memories! When I started to compose this album, I moved to California, and I was feeling very lonely there because I was away from my friends and family. I was in a new city, so it was tough. What really kept me going was remembering happy memories from my childhood. It was almost necessary to do this, like, return to the past.

Naifian “Blue Snow (JTRP Remix)”

This remix by German duo JTRP (pictured above) didn’t make it in time to appear on the Blue Snow EP by Berliner Naifian from earlier this year, but rather than sit on the track in perpetuity, Czech label Meanbucket sent it on over to us as a free download. Like the tracks that did make it onto EP, JTRP’s remix is a slice of exceptionally dark bass music made for haunted nightclubs, as eerie synth pads hum in the background while sharp staccatos stab out a melody over the booty-shaking percussion.

Brenmar Let’s Pretend EP

It’s not easy to put your finger on exactly what Brooklyn-by-way-of-Chicago producer Brenmar is making nowadays. Is it ghetto house? Is it futuristic R&B? Is it the smoothest take on juke ever attempted? Truly, his productions are somewhere between all of those sounds. But no matter where in the wide world of bass music Brenmar finds himself, his tracks have always come completely ready for the dancefloor, and Let’s Pretend, his third official EP, continues with his efforts, featuring three surefire heaters and a brilliant remix from the most recognizable ambassador of New York’s ballroom scene, DJ MikeQ.

Where Brenmar’s Let Me Know (Tasting) EP (released on Sinden’s Grizzly imprint earlier this year) was comprised of huge, layered club tunes, Let’s Pretend is noticeably pared down, with the productions appearing in much leaner, more efficient forms. Fortunately, this does nothing to take away from Brenmar’s sleek rhythms, and actually renders the tuned percussion, frantic snares, and thudding kick drums even more immediate and inviting. The Chris Brown-sampling title track kicks things off on the right foot with a skittering, bouncing bassline and a few choice synth patterns, but the next two offerings are Let’s Pretend‘s best.

Brenmar’s raunchy sex anthem, “Temperature Rising,” folds just a touch of space-disco into the tune’s mix of bubbling booty bass, glassy arpeggios, and slightly glitched R&B vocals. This is followed by one of the producer’s darkest songs to date, “Done (Don’t Luv Me No More).” From the onset, the track is practically empowering in its anger, thanks to a sinister chord progression and pitched-up female vocals that stay fixed on the stern statement, “Don’t love me no more.” Brenmar uses the selection to show off some of his best drum programming; he drops a handful of perfectly executed ascending/descending tom fills over an impeccable half-time beat. Somewhere around the 1:30 mark, the drums completely take over the mix with a speaker rattling, larger-than-life kick pattern and steady clap leading the way.

The EP’s closing cut is a rework of “Done” by NY DJ/producer and ballroom posterboy DJ MikeQ. The artist restricts the original’s rhythms into a much more rigid (albeit stuttering) sequence, and ditches Brenmar’s half-time for a steady, propulsive beat with rolling snares and classic drum machine sounds. The results are equally as dance-worthy as the EP’s other offerings, and helps make Let’s Pretend what is possibly Brenmar’s most consistent release to date, as the entire effort never even approaches a lull. If these tracks are any indication, the tunesmith seems to have locked into his step—flexing his production strengths with preciseness and flair to yield masterful pieces of club music. Any DJ who dips their repertoire into the ghetto-tinged strains of bass music, but doesn’t have at least one (if not all) of these tracks at their disposal, is surely doing their dancefloors a disservice.

Listen to the New Album by Oneohtrix Point Never

Brooyln’s Daniel Lopatin (a.k.a. Oneohtrix Point Never) announced some months ago that he would soon release Replica, the follow-up album to last year’s excellent Returnal. As that release date continues to inch closer, we can whet our appetites for the synth-loving experimentalist’s latest with a stream of the full LP. You can hear OPN’s as-yet-unreleased 10-song opus, as well as check out a list of his upcoming tour dates, below. Look for the producer’s own Software imprint to drop Replica on November 8.
