Randomer Preps New EP for Numbers

The Glasgow-based Numbers imprint—responsible for recent releases from the likes of Mosca, Jamie XX, and Redinho—is gearing up for its twentieth release, a new EP from London producer Randomer. Featuring three new tracks, the Real Talk EP sees Randomer straying from his roots in garage and jungle towards a more 4/4-oriented sound. “Real Talk” offers the closest Randomer has come to techno, trading complicated rhythmic structure for a bare-bones, hard-hitting approach that wastes no time finding a deep, crunchy bassline to keep things going. Follow-up cuts “Lime Pie” and “Stalker” take a similar approach, toying with shades of acid house and, in the case of the latter, a thunderous drum beat that commands the listener’s attention. Below, you’ll find the tracklist and previews of the Real Talk EP, which is slated for release on November 28.

Suzanne Kraft “Fall 2011 Dublab Proton Drive Theme”

If you consider yourself a bonafide electronic music connoisseur, then you’ve no doubt at some point found yourself tuned into the LA-centric music hub known as Dublab. Since starting up in 1999 as an independent internet radio station, Dublab has flourished into a musical institution—throwing events, curating video and art projects, and, most importantly, bringing forward-thinking, cutting-edge sounds to its listeners 24/7. Now, Dublab is in the beginning stages of it’s Fall Proton Drive, a fundraising event that will feature live DJs on the air from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. everyday from now until November 17, at which point the station will embark on a 24-hour “No Sleep Session” for the drive’s finale. To help spread the word, the crew has tapped Suzaane Kraft to put together a theme song of sorts; with the tune’s new-agey vibes and friendly electro-tribal beat, it’s a fine example of the kinds of music Dublab so generously brings to its listeners every day. After giving Kraft’s production a listen below, you can head here to listen to the live fundraising broadcast and donate.

Hackman “Agree to Disagree” b/w “Sunburst”

With the exception of perhaps Jamie XX, no other producer has shown the ability to navigate the strains of UK bass with such a keen sense for melody and seemingly miss-matched sounds (steel drums, other island-reminiscent bells, and Casio-esque organs make regular appearances) as Hackman. The young Londoner adds two new tracks to his impressive run of garage-influenced tunes with his latest single, “Agree to Disagree” b/w “Sunburst,” and effectively gives us a preview of what to expect from his forthcoming debut LP, As Above, So Below.

Things get off to a bit of an unexpected start with a “Radio Edit” of the a-side, which takes up the single’s first three and a half minutes, but it’s easy to see why “Agree to Disagree” was an appropriate tune to truncate, considering that it’s about as pop as UK bass music can get. The meat of Hackman’s almost-six-minute long-form version, which appears next in the track order, exhibits well-paced build-ups patiently spread throughout its arrangement. This precise layering of elements that begins as a dark, energized slice of modern house—complete with some tasteful vocal chops—and eventually culminates into an anthemic combination of chopped bells, buzzing synths, and inescapable stepping rhythms is what makes “Agree to Disagree” such a worthwhile listen.

The b-side offering is even more impressive—folding a generous amount of blissful house vibes into Hackman’s noted slant on modern garage. The “Sunburst” title is entirely too appropriate, as any combination of sun-related descriptors could give you a sense of the sonic warmth at the track’s core. But this is not entirely what makes all of its six-plus minutes so compelling. Rather, it’s once again because of the way Hackman brings his production together, fluidly moving through the different phases with a natural sense for cultivating dynamic peaks and valleys despite never reaching a particular grand theme.

With these two impressive productions serving as the preview for what will be the burgeoning artist’s debut LP, one wonders how the young producer will expand on his ideas in the full-length format, and—maybe more importantly—if it’s even possible to top the two tracks presented on this single. Needless to say, there’s now even more anticipation to hear the results.

Planet Mu to Release New Keep Shelly in Athens EP

Grecian duo Keep Shelly in Athens has apparently signed on to massive UK electronic label Planet Mu for its next release, a four-song EP called Campus Martius. The tracklist will feature three original productions and one remix of Solar Bears’ “Cub” (which we posted for download at the beginning of this year, here), and will drop on December 5. You can check out more info on Keep Shelly in Athens’ Campus Martius EP, as well as hear previews of each tune, here.

Drive Me Home “Hook It Up”

Burgeoning London producer Drive Me Home has just released a new EP called Fast Life (out on vinyl this week and digitally next week), and has shared this slice of slow-motion electro-funk to help spread the word. “Hook It Up” fits enough rattling snares, reverb-washed claps, and booming bass into the tune’s smooth, glowing flow to make this one just as appropriate for a late-night party breakdown as a smoke session at a similar hour. But Drive Me Home is no one-trick pony, and his EP has a variety of funk-dipped electronic offerings to be heard—including some vocal tracks featuring the likes of Olivier Daysoul and Spoek Mathambo, as well as remixes from Machinedrum and Computer Jay, all of which you can hear in the streaming player after the jump.

Entitled Transport, the six-track record features four original productions, which are said to be filled with “blissful, instrumental, mechanical soul,” and two remixes from Ital Tek and Machinedrum. Om Unit’s new EP is schedule to drop on November 28, but you can check out the artwork and tracklist before then, below.

Alixander III Announces Debut Solo Release

Alixander III (best known as the “III” of Toronto’s Azari and III) has announced plans to step out on his own and issue his solo debut, the Schlamm EP. That five track effort, which will see a release November 20 through the Get the Curse label, will consist of three dark, synth-driven originals, along with remixes from Hold Youth (a.k.a. the duo of French producers Seuil and Le Loup) and Barcelona’s Sishi Rosch. In addition to checking out the Schlamm EP’s artwork above, you can listen to streaming previews of the forthcoming record’s five tracks below.

Soosh “Bramhall Waits”

Error Broadcast label-head Sven Swift has put together a free compilation of his favorite tunes within the genres of “instrumental hip-hop in the widest sense… bass music, as the kids say,” entitled Super Feelers (artwork above). Here, we have one of the comp’s stand-out cuts from Glasgow-based producer Soosh, who pins a touch of female crooning and icy pads beneath layers of warm low-end and pot-and-pan percussion on “Bramhall Waits.” Taken from the artist’s self-titled debut EP released earlier this year, “Bramhall Waits” is a fine piece of stony, reflective beat work, and one that sits well with the other eleven similarly head-nod-worthy tracks that make up the collection (including another XLR8R-featured MP3, Monlithium’s “I Want Your Love”). After giving Soosh’s contribution a listen below, you can head here to download Super Feelers in its entirety.

Floating Points Announces New EP, Shares Video

The adventurous UK producer, bandleader, and current PHD student known as Floating Points has announced a new five-track EP, Shadows, which is set to be released later this month on his own Eglo imprint. Along with preview streams of each of the EP’s tunes, the artist has shared a video for his release’s closing tune, “Sais.” The piece places a string of evolving, geometric shapes against the steppy, jazz-indebted number via a custom Max/MSP patch (created by long-time Floating Points friend Will Hurt) that “studies drum machine and synthesizer activity to generate visuals in real time.” You’ll find the video, artwork, and preview streams for the Shadows EP (out November 21) below.
