Sir Charles “Escape”

Deep synth melodies and pulsing grooves abound on this b-side tune from the lastest DJ/producer to sign with Eliot Lipp’s Old Tacoma imprint, 20-year-old Jacksonville, FL resident Charles Weinert (a.k.a. Sir Charles). The auspicious artist will drop his first-ever release, the “Distant” b/w “Escape” 12″, on July 19, and has a handful of live performances and festival appearances slated for later in 2011. In the meantime, you can check out some unreleased heat of a whole other breed from the multi-dimensional tunesmith over on his SoundCloud profile, here.

Podcast 206: Rolando

2011 has seen a significant uptick in Underground Resistance worship, something we here at XLR8R have no qualms about taking part in. The year has also seen a new wave of reverence for one-time UR member Rolando, the man responsible for 1999’s classic “Jaguar,” which just so happens to be one of the biggest techno records ever. A lot has changed in the subsequent decade-plus—most importantly, Rolando has left UR and Detroit behind and set up shop in Edinburgh, Scotland—but he’s still an artist who’s pushing the boundaries of techno and releasing quality tunes, most recently the 5 to 9 EP on Ostgut Ton. Back in May, we spoke to Rolando about where’s he at musically, so we figured now would be a good time to follow that up with an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Skillfully bringing together strains of techno, house, and disco, Rolando flexes his veteran DJ muscle and assembles a mix that lives up to his legendary status.

Burial “Shell of Light (Shlohmo Remix)”

This one is a no-brainer: California beat chopper Shlohmo remixing the ghostly soul of Burial’s “Shell of Light” from 2007’s untouchable Untrue LP. It’s dangerous territory the young producer is venturing into by messing with this beloved material (not to mention music from the ultra-serious Hyperdub label), but Shlohmo seems more than respectful, gently layering his own blown-out beats and falsetto vocal hooks over the last few stanzas of Burial’s original track. In fact, Shlohmo posted the track on WEDIDIT Collective‘s blog saying, “I just really couldn’t stop listening to the ending of ‘Shell of Light.’ Shit is so beautiful, so I did this so I could listen to it more.” Game recognize game, right?

Com Truise Galactic Melt

Oh, the ’80s; some of us try desperately to forget its indelible mark on our culture, while others prefer to revel in its neon nostalgia. Yet no matter your take on über-compressed drum-machine beats, stock analog-synth patches, sci-fi clichés, and cheesy sexual innuendo, there will always (and seemingly quite often) come an artist who mines the era for their own pastiche. New Jersey-based producer Seth Haley (a.k.a. Com Truise) is among the latest batch of musicmakers to do just that. And as his debut LP for Ghostly, Galactic Melt, illustrates, the sonic territory is well past its prime.

Looking solely at the upsides of Com Truise’s record, there’s plenty to enjoy. Haley certainly knows his way around a synth tone, and manufactures a good number of meaty timbres that all sound vaguely familiar and yet somehow unique. The bassline for “VHS Sex” hits you in the gut while its shimmering pads attempt to amass a lump in your throat, and “Hyperlips” uses similar synths—sounding like they were sampled straight from the earliest cassette tapes—to even more emotive effect. Those two cuts, along with “Air Cal” and “Brokendate,” more or less sum up the best parts of Galactic Melt. They exhibit a specific style Haley is obviously not about to abandon, but it’s one that can only be incarnated so many times before losing its life force.

At its best, Galactic Melt re-appropriates the woozy analog haze of early Boards of Canada records for use in its fluorescent compositions. Outside of those tracks, much of Com Truise’s album bares a striking sonic resemblance to the flat synth jingles littering the soundtracks of educational films and TV programs from the ’70s and ’80s—usually with a sparse and largely uninteresting beat smashing around under those nostalgic mostifs, and quite often one robotic voice or another reiterating the track’s title to an obnoxious extent. The kitsch value may warrant a spin or two for curiosity’s sake, but few of the album’s 10 productions have the staying power of the musical touchstones Com Truise is referencing.

Check Out Goldie’s Mix for FACT

Yes, you read that headline correctly: Classic jungle/drum & bass icon and Metalheadz label don Goldie crafted a DJ set for FACT just yesterday, and we think you might enjoy it. Preceding the DJ/producer’s forthcoming Fabriclive release, the podcast is appropriately called an “old-school session,” and boasts solid tunes from folks such as LFO, Internal Affairs, Joey Beltram, A Guy Called Gerald, and more. The mixmaster shared a bit about it, saying, “I’m not claiming to be the best technical DJ, I never have. For me, I try to get the alchemy right, which I’ve done on this mix: each of these are standalone tunes.” You can check out more info on Goldie’s mix here, and stream it below.

Monolithium “Simon & G-Funk”

Borderline ridiculous track name aside, this title cut (yes, he named his EP that too) from Victoria, BC resident Monolithium is an impressive feat of adventurous beat work. Hailing from his debut EP (artwork above), “Simon & G-Funk”—in all fairness—does embody a fair amount of G-funk characteristics, particularly in the track’s futuristic chords and gliding melodies. But there’s also a layer to the tune that takes a more somber, contemplative tone, utilizing dusty chords and melodic thumb piano placed around a set of chopped vocals to evoke a sense of distant yearning. These elements may seem at odds to some, but the unsual combination has proven to be the strength in Monolithium’s technique. After downloading the song below, you can head here to take a listen to the rest of the Simon & G-Funk EP.

Check Out Kingdom’s ‘FADETOMIND’ Mix

It was just a few weeks ago that DJ/producer Ezra Rubin (a.k.a. Kingdom) announced he had started his own imprint, called Fade to Mind, which was inaugurated last Tuesday with the release of the Timesup EP by LA duo Nguzunguzu (who is also responsible for last week’s XLR8R podcast). Last Friday, Rubin did a bit of a victory lap, and dropped a brand-new mix on the website for fashion/culture hub Oki-Ni. The FADETOMIND mix is 15 tracks of club-ready remixes and original productions from the likes of MikeQ, Jam City, Nguzunguzu, Clicks & Whistles, Addison Groove, and Kingdom himself, among others, and is available to stream below. You can read more info on the DJ set here.

Tri Angle Announces US Showcase Tour With Holy Other and oOoOO

Ever since its founding just over a year ago, the Brooklyn-based Tri Angle imprint seems to have consistently maintained a thin veil of mystery surrounding the artists on its roster. So the announcement of a US label showcase tour is a diplomatic voyage of sorts, pulling back the shroud of mystery ever so slightly with Holy Other, oOoOO, and the Tri Angle DJs acting as the ambassadors. Or maybe we’re just reading too much into it. Either way, it is certainly welcome news to hear that Holy Other (who will be playing his first US shows) and oOoOO (who will be embarking on his first official US tour) are set to hit a number of cities on each coast, along with one Midwestern stop, throughout the month of August. You’ll find the complete list of dates below.

Tri Angle Showcase Tour Dates:
August 08 Johnny Brenda’s – Philadelphia, PA
August 11 Mercury Lounge – New York, NY
August 13 Warm Up PS1 – New York, NY (w/Tri Angle artists Ayshay, Clams Casino and Water Borders)
August 16 Echoplex – Los Angeles, CA
August 18 Kuumbwa Jazz Center – Santa Cruz, CA
August 19 103 Harriet – San Francisco, CA
August 27 Empty Bottle – Chicago, IL

Disclosure Give Away Free EP

Riding on the wave of buzz that has circulated around the release of its 7″ for the Transparent imprint, the duo of brothers known as Disclosure has issued a five-track EP for free download. Bookended by the two songs found on the pair’s aforementioned 7″ (“Carnival” and “I Love…That You Know”), the new EP comes with three tracks previously only available as Soundcloud streams: “My Intention Is War,” “Blue You,” and “Just Your Type.” As we’ve come to expect from Disclosure’s small but impressive output to date, the EP is chocked full of bubbling, subdued ventures into the more R&B-tinged strains of UK bass music, and, as always, come complete with a number of irresistibly chopped and pitched vocal hooks. You can stream the EP below, and to grab it for free, head to the duo’s Facebook page (where you’ll have to “Like” them to gain access to the download).
