Casual Fridays: Flowered Up!

Our resident stylist Andrew Porter waxes casual on men’s and women’s must-haves.

YMC Slub Shirt
I love striped shirts, but the rest of the world does not. People associate the basic striped tee with sailors, small children, Pablo Picasso, and “jailbirds.” Apparently, it’s not cool to share similar shirting with your five-year-old cousin. I’ve got the memo several times, but I’m going to keep being me. Take that, ex-girlfriends! For my fellow lovers of stripes, I present you with the YMC Slub shirt—the thinking man’s striped shirt. It says, “Hey, I dig stripes like a kindergartener, but I also feel this Bridget Riley op-art-ish vibe you see happening around mid-torso.” Maybe that’s a stretch. Regardless, great take on a classic.

Fragment x Nike Air Zoom All Court
I’ve always been a big fan of the Nike All Court. I have a couple pairs of the old white canvas ones, both of which are falling apart due to age. Nike has re-released these in a bunch of colorways at this point, but this is the first pair that I have been excited to see. The monochromatic hot lime uppers look spot-on. More subtle than a tennis-ball yellow, but still bold enough to stand out. Not only are these a great look for spring, but with Air Zoom technology they will improve your performance on the court as well… be it the squash court or the food court. Total bonus in my opinion. Big shout out to Hiroshi Fujiwara over at Fragment for these ones.

Gregory Day Garden Tapestry Pack
California-based Gregory has been making backpacks for almost three decades now. The vintage day packs are amazing if you are willing to spend the time scouring eBay for them. If not, the Japanese Lifestyle Collection offers a Gregory Classics Series—packs that follow the “concept and attention to detail that Wayne Gregory established in California almost 30 years ago.” This Day Garden Tapestry Pack is a real standout for me. Floral prints are where it’s at, and this piece certainly delivers one fresh bouquet. Very 1992-Manchester-rave-on, if you ask me. On that note, stay flowered up, all you weekenders. Happy Friday!

The Revenge “Elements of Fife (Tone Mix)”

Glasgow’s Graeme Clark is The Revenge, a contemporary artist mining the classic sounds of New York and Chicago house music for use in his modern productions. This analog-built tune, “Elements of Fife (Tone Mix),” is one such composition, and comes from a forthcoming compilation of similar tracks to be released via Steve Bug’s Poker Flat imprint, called Forward to the Past (read more about it here). Clark wastes no time laying down the heavy 909 groove for his seven-minute jam, but does quite slowly add to the sparse, percussive mix with ticking rhythms and the subtlest of melodies. And though The Revenge calls upon the salad days of house to inspire “Elements of Fife,” its aesthetic is still perfectly in line with many of the club burners we’ve been hearing of late. Here’s to timeless dance music.

Video: Femme En Fourrure “Bronco”

Helsinki’s Femme En Fourrure duo has a brand-new EP ready to drop via its hometown’s Top Billin label on March 18. “Bronco” is its deep, brooding title track, and is paired with an equally dark and far and away more sinister music video here, courtesy of the Cocoa production team. What starts out as a young couple enjoying a romantic dinner by the fire soon becomes a vulgar display of debauchery, misogyny, and all around wildness, as the story’s main man wanders about town wreaking unprecedented havoc. Why the deplorable bastard doesn’t get his throat cut is anyone’s guess, but there’s still some sick enjoyment to be had in watching him do many things that most of us have only fantasized about in our darker moments. And to help you get your full fix of Femme En Fourrure’s chilly club music, we’ve embedded a streaming player of the Bronco EP—complete with remixes from Nguzunguzu, Teeth, and Square Mode—below.

National Park System “Silver Miner”

A seeming newcomer to the San Francisco electronic music landscape, National Park System is Bay Area resident Nicholas Yu, a producer of interstellar atmospheres, moody beatscapes, and the occasional leftfield pop hook. On his latest short-format release, A Visitor’s Guide (pictured above), Yu offers four songs that highlight each of his stylistic strong points—sometimes all at once. “Silver Miner” melds together heavy industrial rhythms with brooding synth washes, audio snippets from otherworldly source material, and a hint of psychedelia. National Park System’s music explores an eclectic range of styles that interplay quite effortlessly, setting him apart from most of the other production work coming out of San Francisco lately. You can hear the rest of National Park System’s A Visitor’s Guide before it’s released in June, here.

Kate Simko to Release Debut Solo Album This May

Globe-trotting techno artist Kate Simko is only months away from adding her first solo studio album to the long list of various releases she’s had a hand in over the past five years. That LP, which is called Lights Out, features 10 tracks from the producer, and will be released in May through Berlin’s Hello? Repeat label. Simko says of her debut full-length, “I looked at the album as an art project, an installation of 10 pieces that together form their own unique being,” which is also said to include the use of analog equipment like Roland’s 505 and 707 drum machines, a Juno 106, and a Poly Evolver synth. You can check out the artwork and tracklist for Lights Out below.

Matthewdavid “All You’ll Never Know”

Nearly a month after we heard the first song that trickled off the forthcoming new EP (and LP, for that matter) from LA cassette-music guru Matthewdavid, we’re treated to another of its four tracks—this one being exclusive to that impending release. The Leaving Records boss starts things off playing with a thick and heavy bass drone surrounded by obscured audio artefacts, sounding not unlike his more formless noise/ambient output, but eventually joins those psychedelic sounds with a light-hearted rhythm seemingly built from the sounds of a Casio SK-1 or some such vintage toy keyboard. However, the song is anything but child’s play; Matthewdavid’s production rises and falls on your head with a crushing weight, and leaves an indelible mark on your psyche that can only be filled by more of his warm, hiss-addled beat work. Hyetal to Release Debut LP, New Single

Burgeoning UK basscase Hyetal already has quite a trail of excellent singles, EPs, and mixes behind him (his exclusive podcast for XLR8R being one of them), but on May 2, the talented producer can add a full-length LP to his repertoire. The 10-track Broadcast will drop via Bristol-based imprint Black Acre, which will also release the preceding single, “Diamond Islands,” on April 11. On the inspiration behind that fresh track, Hyetal says, “I wanted to make something stripped back, so most of it’s just [vocalist Alison Garner], sub-bass, a drum machine, and this weird atmosphere. When I wrote it, I was listening to “Garlands” by Cocteau Twins and really stripped-back hip-hop beats.” You can check out the album artwork and tracklist for Hyetal’s forthcoming album, along with a stream of the lead tune, below.

1. Ritual
2. Diamond Islands (feat. Alison Garner)
3. Phoenix
4. Beach Scene
5. The Chase
6. Searchlight
7. Dimepiece
8. Boneyard
9. Transmission
