Carte Blanche “Do! Do! Do! (Strip Steve Jacked Up Remix)”

Can someone explain exactly what’s going on? Prior to this week, XLR8R had settled into a comfortable little relationship with the electro noiseniks at Ed Banger—namely, the label was a convenient whipping boy for everything that had gone wrong with electro-house. It may not have been fair, but at least we didn’t treat the French label as bad as, say, Steve Aoki. Regardless, now our whole world has been turned upside down, courtesy of Ed Banger’s DJ Mehdi. Yesterday we found his ace remix of Eli Escobar’s “Love Thing 2,” and now he’s got his hands in another quality tune, this remix of last year’s “Do! Do Do!” by Carte Blanche (pictured above), his collaborative project with Riton. To be fair, the original “Do! Do! Do!,” which first appeared on the Black Billionaires EP, is a paint-by-numbers electro-ish number with some largely forgettable rap-singing by Kid Sister. So all the credit on this one goes to remixer Strip Steve, who injects some jacking house flavor, picks up the tempo, and chops Kid Sister’s vocals into sexy oblivion. This version doesn’t appear on the new Black Billionaires: The Remixes EP, which came out yesterday, but that release does include re-workings from Green Velvet and Laidback Luke. Let’s hope their remix work is similarly impressive.

Video: Holy Fuck “Red Lights (A Place to Bury Strangers Remix)”

The A Place to Bury Strangers remix of “Red Lights” is a lot more sinister than Holy Fuck‘s original, and now the Brooklyn band has crafted a video to match. Girls in black face paint engaged in mortal combat with umbrellas in the middle of the desert? Yes please. It’s certainly a lot scarier than Holy Fuck’s video, which was all cute kitties and psychedelic ’70s car chases. You can check that one out below. (via Altered Zones)

Jon Giovanni Preps Single for Grizzly; Watch His Video, Stream a WAFA Remix

Who in the hell is Jon Giovanni? Besides being the latest signing to Sinden’s Grizzly imprint, he’s also a veteran, Grammy-award-winning artist—at least that’s what we’re being told; the guy is operating under an alias. Regardless, the first Jon Giovanni single, “Take Off,” is set for release on January 31. The original is a supercharged take on disco-flavored house with some potent strings and a stompy beat. Check the fun-filled video below, which somehow marries clips from a litany of vintage films with Twin Peaks and some flamingo-centric nature footage. We’ve also got a stream of a remix from Grizzly labelmate WAFA, who dials down the disco and impossibly turns out a version that’s even more hyperactive than the original.

Bubblin’: Laurel Halo

Who:Laurel Halo
Where: Brooklyn, NY

While the washy synthscapes and peppy drum-machine beats of her debut EP, King Felix, underscore Laurel Halo’s place in the current class of Brooklyn bedroom producers turning out leftfield electronic pop, her music is also marked by a sheen and wondrous nature that recalls vintage 4AD. Maybe it’s the many years she spent training and playing classical piano, the time spent in various orchestras, free-improv ensembles, and noise groups, or perhaps the lengthy stint as a college radio DJ, but the 25-year-old artist born Ina Cube displays real songwriting maturity and an ability to deliver emotive material without venturing into tortured-art-school-student territory. Initially self-released, King Felix was recently reissued with a new edit from Oneohtrix Point Never on the Hippos in Tanks label, which will be releasing another Laurel Halo EP this spring. A debut album is in the works, as is a split 7″ with CFCF and a few other odds and ends.

Beautiful Bells “Southern Suite C (Spirituals Remix)”

Here, Portland tunesmith Tyler Tadlock (a.k.a. Spirituals) has delivered a preciously glitched-out remix of “Southern Suite C” by Moodgadget-signed producer Beautiful Bells (pictured above). What was originally an overwhelming bit of sub-heavy rhythms and churning audio shards has become something more serene and melodious, though equally full of sonic fragments. Spirituals creates a lush soundscape of skipping samples, bubbling atmosphere, and thick low-end tones for a minute and a half before introducing the skittering beat that carries the remainder of his version of “Southern Suite C,” and travels even further down the path of playful, glitchy electronica à la Nobukazu Takemura or Oval (maybe even Four Tet) for its remaining six minutes.

Creep Delivers Mix for FACT

It’s long been obvious that Creep‘s Lauren Flax and Lauren Dillard are lovers of all things dark and ominous—the pair’s chilling tunes are a testament to that. But who knew the girls were such avid fans of Ciara and Crime Mob? Last week, FACT unveiled an exclusive mix from the Brooklyn duo, which finds the ladies basically eschewing the witch house genre with which they’ve become inextricably tied in favor of Southern hip-hop and UK bass music. Check the FACT post for more details—including mention of an upcoming collaboration with Nina Sky(!)—or simply check out the tracklist and streaming player below. For the next three weeks, you can also download the mix here.

Eli Escobar “Love Thing Pt. 2 (DJ Medhi Club Mix)”

French producer and Ed Banger acolyte DJ Medhi delivers this tastefully club-ready remix of “Love Thing Pt. 2” by NYC artist Eli Escobar. Boasting a vocal hook that reminds us of Kylie Minogue’s infectious “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” this track kicks off immediately with its sights set on the climax of playlists for your next hands-in-the-air dance party. And yet DJ Medhi’s version has a mature and reserved vibe to its revelry—even when the tune is rocking three synth melodies, a string section, a funky bassline, a straight house beat with plenty of percussion, a slick vocal hook, and all kinds of aural filler, it all twists and shouts just beneath the red so we can fully enjoy every sound working together to make us groove. And if “Love Thing Pt. 2 (DJ Medhi Club Mix)” strikes your fancy, make sure to check out the rest of Love Thing Remix EP over here.

Check Out a Fresh Mix From Andrew Weatherall

Here’s a little something to help you play internet catch-up over the weekend. UK/Japanese-based brand/store/culture hub Oki-Ni has a pretty on-point mix series running on its website, which we just happened to stumble across. It’s described as “a platform for us to unleash our favourite acts onto your ears via monthly free podcasts,” going on to say, “Working with our favourite DJs, bands, and producers, the series aims to ‘venture off the dancefloor’—allowing the artists involved to produce unique and personal snapshots of their record collections.” The series has included acts like Bottin and The Very Best, a list to which veteran producer and one half of Two Lone Swordsmen Andrew Weatherall was recently added. Mr. Weatherall’s mix, which he dubbed Moon, includes a surprising array of artists, like Ben Frost, Zola Jesus, Bright Black Morning Light, Perfume Genius, Stars of the Lid, and many others. You can check out more info on the mix here, and stream/download Weatherall’s mixtape below.
