Podcast 169: Hyetal

Bristol producer Hyetal is a relative newcomer on the XLR8R radar screen, but he’s spent much of the past year quietly releasing a high-quality arsenal of tunes and establishing himself as an artist to keep tabs on. Working both solo and in collaboration with heavy hitters such as Shortstuff and fellow Bristolian Peverelist—we recently previewed their new single of Punch Drunk—Hyetal adeptly combines dubstep-influenced percussion and low-end with blippy synths and a melodic sensibility that appears to draw its greatest influence from classic videogames. But Hyetal isn’t just another UK bedroom beat jockey; as this mix demonstrates, his tastes are quite diverse. Listen in as he pairs his own productions with futuristic house gems and also finds the time to breeze through hip-hop re-fixes, witch house, and classic 4AD serenity.

Spark “Revolving (Ramadanman Remix) “

For our purposes, Spark is a young, up-and-coming UK pop artist, but for UK wunderkind producer and Hessle Audio co-owner Ramadanman‘s purposes, she is a voice worth slicing and dicing to pair with hypnotic drums and musical triangle melodies. Percussion is unquestionably Ramadanman’s biggest strength, his Ramadanman EP an absolute tour de force in drum samples, and everything since has been no less mesmerizing.

Check Out a Video Interview With Hot City

We couldn’t agree more when Benz of Hot City describes the duo’s eventual collaboration as “the Hot City vibe.” Few artists ever define a unique sound, much less one that lasts, but so far Hot City is winning on both fronts; expertly treading rave/house lines that supply just the right amount of dancefloor cheese. Check out this short interview they did with Converse about how they met and their upcoming work with New Order’s Bernard Sumner.

Fulgeance “Glamoure”

Over the last year or so, LA’s beat scene has swelled to include a whole host of producers, many of whom are already releasing full-length albums. However, there are also plenty of producers elsewhere in the world working in similar sonic territory. Hailing from France, Fulgeance has been making hip-hop-inflected electronic music since 2007’s Chico EP, the first in a series of releases for Musique Large that will eventually culminate in a full-length album. The third release in that series, an EP entitled Glamoure, is out today and features seven tracks, three of which are remixes. We have the EP’s title track for you to download, a track whose bouncy blap could certainly find a home on a languid Devin the Dude record or even provide the backdrop to a late-night drive in a John Hughes film.

Listen to Andy Butler and Kim Ann Foxman’s New Single

Back in August we tipped you on an Andy Butler project with San Francisco’s Jason Kendig (a.k.a. DJ Kendig of Honey Soundystem), and now we have the latest from Butler and Hercules & Love Affair bandmate Kim Ann Foxman. Butler’s label, MR. INTL, will release the tracks “Creature” and “What You Need” on Beatport November 1, but you can preview the release right now. Each track highlights both Foxman’s and Butler’s rigorous attention to the sonic emulation of house music’s golden age with lush production and seductive vocals from Foxman. The release will also feature remixes from Chicago mainstay James Curd and UK band Faze Action. Check the Soundcloud player below to listen.

Lone “Re-Schooling”

Travelling further into his otherworldly house music psyche, DJ/producer Matt Cutler has an eight-track release coming soon through his own Magic Wire label, Lone‘s Emerald Fantasy Tracks. Before he drops that double-vinyl set on November 29, Cutler has shared the hyped-up first jam of that collection’s second half. “Re-Schooling” is reminiscent of Lone’s earlier forays into classic-house-inspired dance tunes, the “Pineapple Crush” and “Angel Brain” tracks in particular, with its incessant four-on-the-floor beats and bouncing rave hooks, not to mention Cutler’s own trademark woozy synth melodies and heavily compressed radio haze. This new one sticks confidently to its guns, delivering three and a half minutes of infectiously energetic dance grooves, the likes of which we wouldn’t mind hearing more of at our favorite club nights. Gregory Isaacs Dies Today at 59

A man who has been described as “the most exquisite vocalist in reggae,” Jamaican-born Gregory “Cool Ruler” Isaacs passed away today in London after a year-long battle with lung cancer. The 59-year-old singer left behind a legacy of pioneering hit songs from the ’70s and ’80s, music which was noted for its early infusion of traditional reggae with dancehall. Isaacs continued writing and releasing music well into his later years, and created an astonishing discography of over 500 records bearing his name, many of which were original studio albums. Christopher Chin, the CEO of his longstanding label, VP Records, says of the legendary artist, “He devoted his entire life to music and his memory will forever live on with us—through his music and the legacy he leaves behind.” Our condolences go out to his friends and family.

Listen to Lazer Sword’s Self-Titled Full-Length Album Now

After days, weeks, months, years (!) of ongoing hullabaloo, Bryant Rutledge and Antaeus Roy (a.k.a. Low Limit and Lando Kal, respectively, Lazer Sword, collectively) have finally finished their debut opus, a 15-song full-length LP entitled Lazer Sword. That record will be available in digital and physical formats on November 2 via Innovative Leisure, but right now, you can stream the whole thing over on FACT. So, head over here, and treat your ears to a taste of futuristic hip-hop infused with bass-heavy dance beats, spacey soundscapes, and vocal contributions from lyrical luminaries like Turf Talk and M. Sayyid.

8Bitch “Orpheus (Claude Speeed Remix)”

Dubstep isn’t exactly known as a girl-friendly music scene, but that hasn’t stopped 8Bitch (a.k.a. Maya Medvesek) from getting into the game. The producer splits her time between London and Glasgow, and on November 29 she’ll be releasing the Equinox EP, a 4-track offering that touches on futuristic blap, UK garage, R&B, and even classic mid-’90s Warp experimentalism. We can’t share those tunes quite yet, but the folks at Seed—who will be officially celebrating the release at the label’s 10th birthday party on November 27 in London—have offered up this remix of “Orpheus” by Claude Speeed of Scottish trio American Men. While 8Bitch’s original effectively combines rapid-fire drums with pastoral ambience, the remix mellows things out with some fuzzy synths and wistful melodies that sound as though they were equally inspired by ’80s teen films and video games—it’s like M83 in a dubstep template, although that sounds like a terrible idea and this song is actually pretty great.

Bubblin’: Sepalcure

Who:Sepalcure
Where: Brooklyn, NY

Travis Stewart (a.k.a. Machinedrum) and Praveen Sharma have been friends for years; the duo runs the Cassette NYC parties and the online community mix archive Percussion Lab, but only began collaborating on music in September of 2009. Bored with their solo projects, they threw out past blueprints and delved into ’90s house, the skittering sounds of 2-step, and the sexier, more soulful and melodic side of UK bass music. The Hotlfush label—home to like-minded acts such as Mount Kimbie and Scuba—seems like the perfect place for Sepalcure’s talents, and released the pair’s debut EP, Love Pressure, earlier this year.
