Podcast 170: DJ Food & DK vs. Coldcut

XLR8R has been reveling in Ninja Tune’s 20th anniversary all month long, and tonight the celebration steps up a notch with the Ninja Tune XX event in New York, to be followed this weekend by the equally enormous San Francisco and Los Angeles parties. To help ramp everyone up ahead of time, we’re also sharing the final installment of our special Ninja Tune XX podcast series, and it’s a doozy. Label founders Coldcut have teamed up with old-school Ninja Tune acts DJ Food and DK to assemble this massive mix which spans Ninja Tune’s extensive discography. Over the course of 70-plus minutes and more than 40 tracks, the Solid Steel veterans touch on the many eras, sounds, and styles of the venerable label’s diverse history.

Ultrasone HFI-680 Headphones

As the description on Ultrasone HFI-680 (MSRP: $249) headphones’ packaging points out, most run-of-the-mill phones on the market attempt to put whatever you may be jammin’ to inside of your head. With its patented S-Logic™ Natural Surround Sound, these cans put the audio around your head, and the thick, comfortable cushioning around the acoustically designed earcups helps keep the professional-quality sound in (no sonic bleed coming from these guys). If that’s not enough, Ultrasone’s proprietary ULE (Ultra-Low Emission) technology, utilizing a MU Metal buffer board, keeps the magnetic radiation away from your precious brains. Comfortable and safer ear gear with excellent sound, at a very un-Ultrasone price? We’re into it.

Ghosts of Venice “Her (Bit Funk Remix)”

Now that Daft Punk seems to be going the way of its Parisian brethren Justice (really, have you heard this “Derezzed” business?), maybe we can all stop waiting with bated breath for anything resembling the funky, fun-loving tunes we first loved from the duo, and continue looking elsewhere for our fix of infectious French house. You can get started with Ghosts of Venice‘s just-released jam for the Solid Bump label, “Her,” and its accompanying remix by Chicago’s Bit Funk (pictured above). Rarely does a producer’s moniker fit their sound so well; Bit Funk’s “Her” remix is certainly full of funky house grooves, with just a tad of lo-bit synth energy to give it a special edge.

Digital Mystikz Announce Upcoming Release of Sophomore Album

The collaborative outfit comprised of dubstep icons Coki and Mala, Digital Mystikz, recently announced that it will release a follow-up to this year’s Return II Space, which was produced entirely by Mala, with another album made up of all Coki tracks. Urban Ethics is purported to be coming sometime in early 2011, and will be released by the duo’s own DMZ imprint. There is no official release date or tracklist available, but you can check out the artwork below. (via FACT)

Ratatat “Neckbrace (Hyetal Remix)”

The fella behind our most recent podcast, Bristol producer Hyetal, also took the helm for this skittering remix of Ratatat‘s “Neckbrace.” That duo’s trademark sound arsenal—scraping grooves, layers of live instrumentation, and reversed synth/guitar swells—is re-fixed to fit the UK tunesmith’s club-ready format, sounding like something more along the lines of Giorgio Moroder trying his hand at bass music. Surprisingly, it all meshes well, even when Hyetal isn’t pushing his shuffling dance beats in the mix, and during lulls in the hyperactivity, Ratatat’s melodic soundscapes are appropriated for touching vibes unavailable on the band’s own records.

Listen to Brian Eno’s ‘Small Craft On a Milk Sea’ Now

We’ve all heard about it, we’ve likely all been talking about it, and we now, can all hear it: Brian Eno‘s brand-new album for Warp, Small Craft on a Milk Sea. There’s really no reason to try to compartmentalize or even describe the music on this record; the artist name and title alone do the job for us. So, we’ll just point you in the right direction. Head to NPR’s website, here, and get your fill of instrumental Eno brilliance.

Video: MJ Cole & Wiley’s “From the Drop”

At this point, we’re not even really bothered that Wiley has apparently reused his lyrics from this tune he did with MJ Cole on Prodigal‘s Showa Eski Riddim (you can hear that here). The flow is excellent, it works perfectly on both tracks, and besides, people constantly reuse ideas—and to great effect. Like on this video for Cole’s and Wiley’s collaborative track, “From the Drop,” sometimes it’s just best to stick to what you know. Why muck up a solid tune with a video full of plot and high-quality special effects when you can just grab a handful of serious babes and make them dance in front of a strobe light? Throw in some creepy, Taliban-looking dudes, get a couple blips of the guy that made the song, maybe get the babes soggy at some point, and blammo!—you’ve got a good-looking video built with some pretty basic ideas. Props to recycling.

Flying Lotus “Pie Face (My Dry Wet Mess Remix)”

Doing remixes of high-profile artists is certainly one way to make sure people take notice of your work. Obviously, it also helps to make those remixes good, but it’s equally important to make your own production style stand out in the mix of familiar sounds. And that’s exactly what Barcelona’s My Dry Wet Mess (pictured above) does on his rework of Flying Lotus’ Pattern + Grid World cut “Pie Face.” The playful bleeps and bloops and lighthearted swagger of producer Steven Ellison’s original track are still intact, but the Spanish beatsmith tweaks those sounds into a jam with a tad more textural atmosphere, stuttering bounce, and cluttered sound palette. My Dry Wet Mess’ remix quite expertly rides the line between respecting his source material and flexing his own style, and stands up well next to his own tracks from his just-released debut album on Magical Properties, Irrational Alphabet. Factozoid!! Lazer Sword!

XLR8R has been celebrating the bass-heavy beat manipulation of Lazer Sword for a few years, but with the duo set to release their full-length debut next week, we decided to dig deeper and unearth some little-known facts about Low Limit and Lando Kal.

LAZER SWORD HAS A STAND-IN HAND MODEL!!
We’re letting the cat outta the bag here, but due to our location divide, we got a stand-in hand model (our homie Sebastian from Montreal!) to play Bryant’s part in the photo shoot for Low Limit vs. Lando Kal’s Golden Handshake EP.

LAZER SWORD PRODUCED THE XLR8R PODCAST INTRO!!
The same one that plays before every freakin’ podcast episode was made by us. Bryant made that from some Lazer Sword loops several years back, and that’s Antaeus’ cool voice in there as well. That shit is so glitch/IDM circa 2006!

LAZER SWORD DISLIKES ANGRY DUBSTEP!!
There seems to be some confusion about this, but for future reference, there’s nothing more jarring than peak-hour muscle-step blaring from our runner’s car when we get picked up from the airport. We’re not so much into that type of stuff in the first place, especially right after a long flight. We’d like to hear nice music instead… something like Atlas Sound or Delorean.

LAZER SWORD GOT ITS NAME FROM A KAOSS PAD PRESET!!
The actual effect isn’t all that great, but we thought the name was pretty cool, so we ran with it. We didn’t name ourselves after a light saber. We didn’t even make the connection to the Star Wars weapon until a few people had mentioned it.

LAZER SWORD LIVES IN TWO COUNTRIES AT THE SAME TIME!!
Bryant just recently moved to live in Los Angeles, and Antaeus just relocated to Berlin. Worry not! We’ll still be going strong with Lazer Sword, as well as doing solo production and shows under our solo entities, Low Limit and Lando Kal. But don’t forget, the Bay Area is the original home turf of Lazer Sword!!!!

LAZER SWORD’S NEW, SELF-TITLED ALBUM IS NOT ALL BANGERS!!
Sure, there are several power cuts on the new record, but you’ll also find some mellower songs, even a couple compositions with no drums at all. It’s important with a full-length that it’s not all meat and potatoes—gotta get some veggies up in the mix, maybe some bread, a glass of wine, and dessert, fo sho.

Lazer Sword is out November 2 on Innovative Leisure.
