Ango “Part Time (Salva Remix)”

This energetic bass number is the product of a remix trade off between Montreal’s Ango (pictured above) and San Francisco’s Salva. The Bay Area-based beatsmith tweaked the elements of his Canadian neighbor’s “Part Time” track into something a bit funkier, a bit more upbeat, and a bit more ready to make an appearance in your next peak-hour DJ set. Salva’s bubbling future-house remix shows a new side to his production work—one full of the kind of squelchy bass notes, frigid synth tones, alien textures, and skittering dance rhythms you’d catch coming from UK tune hubs such as Night Slugs or Blunted Robots. Now, we’re left wondering what the other side of this exchange will yield.

New Single From Untold to Drop this November on R&S

At this rate, Belgium’s R&S label is likely to release a record of some sort for just about every one of XLR8R‘s favorite producers. Next in line is the forthcoming new 12″ by Hemlock label head and bass music champion Jack Dunning (a.k.a. Untold), which follows Numbers‘ recent release of his “Myth” collaboration with UK funky star Roska. November 8 will see the release of the “Stereo Freeze” b/w “Mass Dreams of the Future” single, two massive tunes well-deserving of the imprint’s iconic stamp. You can check out the record’s artwork below.

Joe Worricker “Bobby Blue (Lissvik Remix)”

Did the boys of Studio make some kind of nefarious deal with the devil? Not to imply that these Swedes spend their free time worshiping Satan, but their music always sounds so damn good. It’s like the perfect mix of new-wave pop, laid-back disco, and Balearic beach vibes—all of these things might be familiar tropes in 2010, but Studio have been turning out music like this for years now. And thankfully, they show no signs of altering their sonic formula. Take this remix of UK crooner Joe Worricker—the original “Bobby Blue” comes off like a low-rent Antony, but Studio’s Dan Lissvik (operating under the more simple Lissvik moniker and pictured above) has transformed the song into a slightly dubby piece of tropical disco-pop heaven. Keep it coming, guys, and while you’re at it, maybe release another album… please?

Tanlines to Release Compilation Album

Brooklyn-based tropically flavored pop duo Tanlines has planned a sort of unconventional release for its European fans. While folks in the US enjoyed the band’s debut EP for True Panther, Settings, it never received a proper release on the other side of the pond. To remedy that problem, on December 6, Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm will release a limited-edition, double-disc compilation album, entitled Volume On [sic], that takes its 18 tracks from various EPs, singles, one-off tunes, remixes, and never-before-heard numbers by the pair and some of their like-minded peers. Volume On boasts appearances from the likes of Glasser, Memory Tapes, and Austin Fisher of Suckers, along with acoustic versions and club mixes of Tanlines’ songs. You can check out the full tracklist and artwork, along with a few UK tour dates, below.

Subeena “Dual”

While many producers discover their knack for crafting inventive electronic music later in life, some people were just born to make it. Take London’s Sabina Plamenova, a 25-year-old college student who has been producing bass-centric tunes since the age of 18. Even her given name is a prime foundation for the auspicious musicmaker’s slightly tweaked moniker, Subeena. The talented lady has her own record label, too, called Opit, which just dropped her new “Neurotic” b/w “Wishful Talk” single, complete with remixes from Egyptrixx and Ghosts on Tape (preview all that here). Not on that release, “Dual” is an exclusive jam that highlights both the light and dark sides of Subeena’s music. The driving track starts out with twinkling melodies and bubbling basslines, and leans heavy on those elegant sounds until ominous low-end churns, stomping percussion, and an all-around darker mood take over—only to give way to the pleasantries again before its four and a half minutes are up.

Girl Unit’s ‘Wut’ to Finally Drop on Night Slugs Next Week

After months of anticipation—a time which saw mention legions of naughty DJs ripping segments of the track from online DJ mixes and YouTube—London producer Girl Unit is finally releasing his anthemic “Wut” to the masses. After releasing the I.R.L. EP in March, Girl Unit’s next Night Slugs wasn’t originally supposed to follow so quickly, but the chatter surrounding the R&B-flavored slice of UK futurism eventually reached such a fever pitch that the song simply had to be released. The “Wut” single comes out next Monday, October 25, and will also include b-sides “Every Time” and “Showstoppa”; you may remember the former from Girl Unit’s XLR8R podcast, which still sounds fresh more than two months after its initial release.

Shackleton to Release ‘Fabric 55’ Mix Album

For the next edition of the never-ending run of mix albums released by London’s all-encompassing Fabric brand, Skull Disco co-owner and inventive bass music patron Shackleton will deliver a lengthy, self-centered (in a good way) live set on December 6. The producer’s Fabric 55 mix features 21 new, old, and unreleased tracks all created by the mixmaster himself. On his selections, Shackleton says, “I have tried to make a set that would best represent the set I played on [my first] night [at Fabric], but minus the mistakes. Some of the tracks are re-jigged versions of older material, some of them are new. Some of them will never see a release in any form aside from this. Some of them are not even tracks, just coincidental parts merging with each other between tracks. Those are the best bits, actually. I don’t expect everyone to like it. I know it is not to everyone’s taste.” We’ll be the judge of that! Until Fabric 55 drops, you can check out the artwork and tracklist below.

Slits Founder Ariane “Ari Up” Forester Dies at 48

Frontwoman of pioneering all-girl punk outfit The Slits Ariane “Ari-Up” Forester (a number of different spellings for her proper name appear across the web and from official sources) died yesterday after battling with what has only been described as “a serious illness.” The news was released on the website for Sex Pistol’s and Public Image Ltd.’s frontman, John Lydon (who is Forester’s stepfather), saying, “John [Lydon] and Nora [Forester] have asked us to let everyone know that Nora’s daughter Arianna (a.k.a. Ari Up) died today (October 20) after a serious illness. She will be sadly missed. Everyone at JohnLydon.com and PiLofficial.com would like to pass on their heartfelt condolences to John, Nora, and family. Rest in peace.” Ari Up was an important musical figure as the offbeat, dreadlocked founder of The Slits and New Age Steppers, and we were lucky enough to interview the inimitable vocalist just over a year ago, which you can read here. In her memory, we’ve included some of our favorite videos of The Slits, including the never-before-released “Lazy Slam,” below. Our thoughts go out to Ari Up’s friends and family in this difficult time.

Podcast 168: Toddla T

The hubbub surrounding Ninja Tune’s 20th anniversary has featured a lot of looks back at the label’s history and accomplishments over the last two decades, but while it’s fun to look back at the imprint’s storied past, it’s important to remember that it also has a vibrant future, thanks in no small part to artists like Toddla T. The young Sheffield producer’s high-octane mix of dancehall and bass-heavy electronic sounds has been crashing its way onto dancefloors for a few years now—we first tabbed him as an Artist to Watch in the summer of ’09—so we’re thrilled to add him to the list of participants in the XLR8R podcast series. As expected, his mix is a hyperactive affair, but Toddla manages to touch on dancehall, hip-hop, electro, grime, and even drum & bass over the course of just 38 minutes. The boy may not be long on attention span, but he certainly knows how to work the dancefloor, so listen to Toddla T work his magic and don’t forget to check back next Thursday for the final installment of our special Ninja Tune podcast series. (Hint: It’s a big one.) Also, make sure to take a look at XLR8R‘s Ninja Tune XX microsite for more exclusive content, Ninja Tune XX event info, and plenty of other celebratory goodies.

Korg Monotron Analog Ribbon Synth

Remember when the MicroKorg came out? Everyone and their brother was suddenly “into” synths, and an almost equal number of bands started using the small, affordable instrument live and in the studio. Well, it seems we ought to get ready for the next level of that integration, as Korg recently released an even more compact synthesizer, the Monotron (MSRP: $90). This little bugger fits into the palm of your hand, and boasts many capabilities of some of the biggest pieces of hardware. One VCO, one VCF, and one LFO combine with other modular controls, Korg’s classic analog sound, and a ribbon controller keyboard to pack a portable punch unlike anything else currently available. The battery-powered device also has a built-in speaker for sharing your sound creations on the go, but if those get to be a bit much for your audience, you can jam out alone with the handy headphone jack.
