Big Freedia Talks MJ, Katrina, and Treme in Toronto

After checking out New Orleans bounce queen Big Freedia‘s show at Toronto’s NXNE Festivala couple of weeks back, we just couldn’t help but grab the MC for a few (very informal) words the next morning at our hotel. The super-motivated Freedia told us all about coming out as a 12-year-old, what Hurricane Katrina did for bounce music, and the only item she needs to rock the party.

Kebab “Life It’s a Joke”

Apparently, the well of quality vintage post-punk hasn’t gone dry just yet. While the onslaught of post-punk nostalgia over the past decade often makes the latest reissue of a previously hard-to-find “gem” a dubious prospect, Brooklyn’s SoftSpot label has seemingly discovered the genre’s last great untapped field—Belgium. Last year the label kicked off with the reissue of a 7″ from early-’80s Belgian outfit AA, and just this month has followed it up with the release of We Live in a System, a 12″ LP featuring the work of fellow Belgians Kebab. “Life It’s a Joke” originally appeared on a 1982 7″, and finds the quartet’s angular guitars and bouncing basslines sounding a lot like those of contemporaries Delta 5 and Bush Tetras. The original “Life It’s a Joke” 7″ was long a staple on record collector want lists, but now it’s been reissued on vinyl and compiled with all of the band’s known studio recordings and key selections from its original 1981 demo tape. The We Live in a System 12″ is available for sale here.

Listen to Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Podcast

Following the recent release of his label’s compilation album, Brownswood Electr*c, BBC Radio 1 personality Gilles Peterson grabbed his label co-conspirator and compilation curator, Alex Stevenson, to share and chat about the tunes featured on the 15-track release. The podcast features tracks from Mount Kimbie, Mosca, B. Bravo, and Shlohmo, among others, along with entertaining and informative conversation between Stevenson and Peterson about the artists and the compilation itself. A launch party is planned for Brownswood Electr*c at C.A.M.P. in London (more info on that here), and you can buy the album here. The podcast stream is below.

Allez-Allez “Weird Science (Alternate Version)”

Here is a new take on London-based outfit Allez-Allez‘s “Weird Science” track, from its recently released Hideous Racket EP. The distorted, warbling dance number is fairly lo-fi and psychedelic in comparison to most club music that comes from the duo’s home turf, but still manages to carve out some relatively sluggish grooves. The original is a bit more clear-headed and dancefloor appropriate, but we could still imagine hearing the alternate version close out—or maybe even slowly open up—a DJ set or two.

Watch the Making of Skream’s “Listening to the Records on My Wall” Video

For the first single off of Skream‘s forthcoming second full-length, Outside the Box (released July 26 via Tempa), director David Wilson saw fit to play God and stage the creation of Biblical icons Adam and Eve. The actual video won’t be available to view until July 12, but here we have an extremely interesting inside look at the making of the “Listening to the Records on My Wall” video. There’s a lot of intricate detail covered in the whole process, so we’ll let the piece do all the explaining. For your convenience, we’ve also included a stream of Skream’s new single below.

Wafa “Pop Up (Canblaster Remix)”

What’s so enjoyable about French producer Canblaster‘s (pictured above) remix of Wafa‘s “Pop Up” track, which is taken from his Ewid Disco 12″ for Sinden’s new Grizzly label, is the many forms the house-inspired number takes while always remaining focused entirely on the dancefloor. This new version goes through a few movements with its five-minute runtime; an energetic synth melody and pumping future-house beat kick off the tune before the rhythm cuts into halftime and some massive bass tones are introduced, which is then followed by a fresh marimba melody and more pulsing synth sounds and spaced-out effects. As much as it seems like Canblaster’s remix can’t decide exactly which direction it wants to take, the quick changes in trajectory blend well with the track’s other moments—making for not only great get-down possibilities, but exciting headphone experiences, as well. Martyn, Efdemin, and Mathew Jonson on Tiga’s New Remix EP

Last year, we reported on Canadian electro head Tiga planning to release a series of remix EPs, each focusing on a single track from 2009’s Ciao! album. Four 12″ records are planned for the series, the third of which is set to be released July 13 via Turbo. The forthcoming Gentle Giant Remixes EP contains three versions of the track, though you can score an extra remix in the digital version, and features reworks from D.C. dubstepper Martyn, Berlin technophile Efdemin, and Canadian-turned-Berliner Mathew Jonson. On the artists involved with the remixing, Tiga said, “When a song means a lot to you personally, having it remixed is a lot like sending your child to undergo plastic surgery. In this case, though, it was like having the operation performed by doctors you respect as musicians.” You can check out the artwork for Gentle Giant Remixes below.
