Model 500 Readies First Release in Over a Decade, Alan Oldham Talks to Resident Advisor

Detroit techno kingpin Juan Atkins’ Model 500 project has been dormant for about 11 years now, but has recently reformed along with Underground Resistance‘s “Mad” Mike Banks, DJ Skurge, and Mark Taylor as a sort of super-group. The outfit has come together for some live shows, and is now set to release its first material since 1999’s Mind and Body, a three-track EP to be released in September on R&S. There are clips available of the two original tracks on the release, “OFI” and “Huesca,” on the R&S MySpace page, and a remix of “OFI” by Mike Banks will finish out the EP. (via FACT)

In other Detroit-related news, music-making jack of all trades Alan Oldham met up with Resident Advisor scribe Finn Johansen in Berlin to listen and talk about some choice pieces of vinyl. The conversations go well beyond the actual music itself, as Oldham talks about some of his early influences, his work as DJ T-1000 and Inside, his illustrations, and his experiences in the Detroit techno world. You can read that lengthy Q&A here.

Korallreven “Loved-Up (LOL Boys Remix)”

Production duo LOL Boys (pictured above) snagged the pieces of fellow two-piece Korallreven‘s hazy Balearic pop number “Loved-Up” and reformatted them into something a bit less subtle, rhythmically speaking, though as equally filled with delicate atmosphere. The bouncing beat and swirling melodies are plenty enjoyable, but it’s the way LOL Boys toy with the dainty vocal track that really catches our attention. At first, the thin falsetto is chopped up and warped as a more percussive melody, which is matched equally by the beautifully sung lyrics, “I’m so loved up/I’m so scared,” themselves soaked in dreamy reverb.

Eskmo Signs to Ninja Tune, Gives Away Free Track

In the midst of celebrating 20 years of releasing excellent electronic music, Ninja Tune found time to pen a deal with San Francisco’s Eskmo, and sign the burgeoning tunesmith to its roster. The signing comes over half a decade of producer Brendan Angelides releasing one-off EPs and singles for labels like Warp and Planet Mu, touring throughout North American and Europe, and recently collaborating with Amon Tobin on the Eskamon project. To mark the occasion and continue to give away free music for its birthday celebration, the label is making Eskmo’s new track, “Come Back,” available for free download through the Ninja Tune XX website. The new Ninja artist will also be releasing his first single for the label, “Cloud Light,” on the Ninja Tune XX compilation, playing upcoming parties in London, Paris, and Brussels, and releasing a brand-new album this October.

DJ Nate “Make Em Run “

If you asked someone to describe what is needed to create a song, or asked them what elements music in general should consist of, you’re likely to get a handful of long-winded responses that could be boiled down to two parts: rhythm and melody. Aside from, say, certain noise and experimental acts, it’s a fair enough breakdown, but it makes us wonder where Chicago’s juke/footwork scene fits in. Like with this track from DJ Nate‘s upcoming Hatas Our Motivation EP for Planet Mu, much of the genre isn’t the least bit interested in discernible melodies (save for quickly pitch-shifted, atonal vocal samples), and much of the bass-centric rhythms involved are so all over the place that a groove can be difficult to find. Still, there’s obviously no denying that this is music pure and simple; it just happens to be unlike anything else we’ve had the pleasure of putting our ears to. (via 20JFG)

Watch “Fissa Tune” From Exploited Records’ Homework

XLR8R Couldn't find the embed function for type: "vimeo" and source: "<embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=12971553&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="530" height="298">".

Not saying that you have to, but if you watch this video stoned, you might end up thinking it’s the best thing ever. Amsterdam-based DJ/production duo Homework recently released its Fissa Tune EP, and the video for the title track is totally weird, warmly colorful, oddly funny, and chock full of DIY special effects. Underneath Homework’s bouncing, leftfield house tune, a couple straight-faced men toy with the camera and each other using various optical illusions involving a shit-ton of photographs, time-lapse camera work, a bit of paint, and a brief encounter with a strange group of friends. The “Fissa Tune” video was directed by Tom Waist, but had you asked us, we’d have speculated it was a collaborative effort between Michel Gondry, David Lynch, and Alejandro Jodorowsky. Yeah, it’s stoner-flick central.

L-Vis 1990 Readies New EP for Night Slugs; Listen to the Title Track “Forever You”

While London’s Night Slugs imprint has undoubtedly been one of the most exciting labels of 2010, its discography to date has only featured a few bits and pieces from joint bossmen Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990. As of next week, that situation will be remedied, as the latter will be dropping the Forever You EP, a five-track release featuring the bubbling future-house sounds that L-Vis 1990 is known for. We’ve got an exclusive stream of the title track, which finds the producer’s shuffling rhythms and off-kilter synth swells augmented by the vocals of Shadz, who adds an unexpectedly soulful touch to the proceedings. Give it a listen below.

Watch the Video for Katy B’s New Benga-Produced Single

Earlier today, Rinse posted the video for “Katy on a Mission,” the first single from the UK chanteuse’s forthcoming new album. The song was produced by Benga, but he’s toned down his trademark chainsaw wobble to a reasonable level, allowing Katy B‘s soulful vocals to shine. The video, however, features both of them, mostly via shots of Katy sultrily singing and Benga raging behind the decks.

Lobisomem “Concussus”

Brooklyn producer Brad Loving (a.k.a. Lobisomem) is one of those guys who is anything but married to a single style or sound. Lazy journalists might just slap the IDM tag on him and call it a day, but that glosses over Loving’s extreme attention to detail and ability to fold together minute slabs of audio from varied genres, influences, and even continents. On September 14 he’ll be releasing Onze Pedras, his full-length follow-up to the Brightest Solids EP that came out earlier this year. “Concussus” is the only snippet we’ve heard so far, but it appears that Loving’s desire to elegantly combine sounds from across the musical spectrum remains unabated. Utilizing a sparse casio beat that could have been borrowed from the Morr Music catalog, Loving brings in a warbling trumpet, crackling bits of static, finely chopped vocal snippets, and slowly boiling synth swells before the track’s four minutes come to an end. Let’s hope that the rest of Onze Pedras contains similarly unique recipes.
