Hercules & Love Affair to Tour With New Line-up

Watch the Video for Magnetic Man’s “I Need Air”

The black-and-blue-soaked mass of dance music fans in this video for Magnetic Man‘s new single, “I Need Air,” are not hired extras or indifferent folks going through the ‘I’m really into this, man’ motions. The throng of kids young and old were actual festival-goers at the Parklife festival in Australia, uninhibitedly enjoying the pop-friendly club tune coming from the UK trio of Skream, Benga, and Artwork. As hues flash and saturate the people, live footage is intercut and overlaid with quick bits of CGI and Tron-esque streams of light dancing about the crowd. It all creates the effect that something is stirring within the new music, its producers, and followers—something Magnetic Man has been cooking up for some time. (via Resident Advisor)

Podcast 150: Pilooski

French re-edit master Pilooski is a bit of a man of mystery—he’s got a hand in running the Dirty label collective and he continues to drop insanely good re-workings of vintage tunes, yet he remains largely in the shadows. However, as of late he’s been poking his head out of his production cave, both to put together this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast and to work with new French outfit The Aikiu, who just released its debut single “Just Can’t Sleep” with Pilooski behind the boards. As for this mix, Pilooski delves into his usual bag of tricks, combining rare slices of pop, disco, house, and other re-arranged musical selections into an oddly dark and psychedelic affair. He also intersperses the whole thing with bizarre sound clips of seemingly wholesome people talking about drugs, sex, and violence. It’s certainly a potent recipe.

Copywrite “Forever and a Day”

We usually don’t get much in the realm of “downer” music here at XLR8R, so hopefully you’ll appreciate the brief change of pace. This somber tune was produced by RJD2 for Ohio-born MC Copywrite, who penned the lyrics for “Forever and a Day.” Copywrite wrote the song in remembrance of those who have passed on—specifically, his friend and musical partner Camu Tao and his father Peter James Nelson. It’s a sentiment which meshes ideally with RJ’s slow-grooving, tastefully mellow instrumental, and even the softly sung chorus from D.C. indie band Middle Distance Runner.

“Forever and a Day” will be released on Copywrite’s forthcoming full-length, The Life and Times of Peter Nelson, in October.

El Remolón “Estilo Acapulco (feat. Boogat)”

This new jam off of ZZK acolyte El Remolón‘s forthcoming EP, Pangeatico, kicks off sounding something like a Latin-flavored LCD Soundsystem; the thick bassline bounces slowly, funky synth stabs hop around the percussion elements, and a simple hi-hat-heavy beat carries the whole tune. But after the minute-long intro, guest vocalist Boogat‘s fiery Spanish vocal comes in, and it’s made abundantly clear this is a tune straight from the Southern Hemisphere. Hopefully you can catch El Remolón playing this track on tour in North America—along with Tremor, Chancha via Circuito, and El G—after his Pangeatico is released July 20.

Livid Block MIDI Controller

Controlling Live and Max/MSP just got really sleek. Livid Instruments‘ Block MIDI controller (MSRP: $425) might be one of the most streamlined control surfaces yet to be released. Its minimal design and subtle color scheme (think monome) perfectly compliment its 64 assignable clip buttons, eight knobs, seven function buttons, and two faders that stand as the core of the controller’s versatility. Compatibility with any MIDI-supporting software and OS, an easy plug-and-play USB interface, access to Livid’s open-source software, and lovingly handcrafted wood-aluminum design help lift this portable piece of hardware above its competitors. At first glance, Block may seem like just a lite version of Livid’s trademark Ohm series, but sometimes with MIDI controllers, as with the music they control, less is more.

Nite Jewel Switches Up Line-Up, Announces EP and Tour

It was announced today that Nite Jewel (the working pseudonym of LA-based singer/keyboardist/producer Ramona Gonzales) will release a new six-track EP, Am I Real?, on Gloriette on August 16. The title track can be purchased here now, and the digital version of the EP will be available July 20.

As well, the Nite Jewel line-up (if last night’s SF performance with Dam-Funk was any indication) appears to have been changed up a bit, with the inclusion of Gonzales’ husband, former Ariel Pink bandmate Cole M. Greif-Neill, taking the place of keyboardist Emily Jane. The new trio will play the following dates this summer.

XLR8R Exclusive! El-P Remixes Justin Bieber (with our help…)

Over the past week, we’ve been going back and forth with Definitive Jux label head and NY indie-rap icon El-P on Twitter about jokingly doing us a remix of Justin Bieber if we could find him an acappella. Well, guess what? We came through with the vocals, and El-P came through with a dope-ass opus—a remix of tween heartthrob The Bieb‘s “Baby.” Mixing in a heavy dose of the Paul McCartney and Wings’ classic “Live and Let Die,” amongst other things, the results are pretty far from Bieber’s wholesome original. Hear El-P’s take right here.

Stream the New Aeroplane Single

Aeroplane might now officially be a solo affair, but its debut full-length, We Can’t Fly, was produced by both Stephen Fasano and Vito De Luca, as was the title-track single we’re sharing with you now. These two versions of “We Can’t Fly” precede Aeroplane’s record by almost two months exactly, and provide a brief window into the Belgian producers’ finely crafted aesthetic. It’s a bit island-y, it’s a bit disco-y, and it’s a bit short, but it’s merely a taste of Fasano’s and De Luca’s long-awaited vision.
