Catch the Free ‘Senta Mix’ From French Fries

After one quick look at Parisian DJ/producer French Fries‘ MySpace page, it’s apparent the guy is into ‘club’ tunes. Thankfully for us, he doesn’t equate bad remixes of “Baba O’Riley” or the new Christina Aguilera as music fit for his (or your) dance parties, and instead flexes the likes of Lil Silva, Ramadanman, Untold, James Blake, and Supra1 in his DJ sets. If you head over to the Mad Decent website, you can snag a fresh mix French Fries just put together that features said artists, along with plenty more great producers and a track of the DJ’s own. The Senta Mix is available for stream and download here.

Podcast 149: The Glitch Mob

Long before the LA beat scene threatened to take over the pages of XLR8R, The Glitch Mob was turning heads with its party-starting and hip-hop-informed take on bass music. Now, on the heels of their debut album, Drink the Sea, Ooah, Boreta, and edIT have moved beyond the confines of their Southern California stomping grounds and taken their low-end rumblings to the masses. Fresh off a massive US tour, the boys put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast, right before they hit the road again for another lengthy run of dates. Much like the group’s live set, the podcast weaves through a number of different styles and artists, all unified by one dominant trait—the presence of an infectious beat.

Magnetic Man “I Need Air (Redlight Remix)”

Taken from the official debut single by Skream, Benga, and Artwork’s collaborative project, Magnetic Man (pictured above), Redlight‘s remix of “I Need Air” starts out mellow enough with a distant melody and catchy female-vocal hook, but soon erupts into steeply ascending and descending synth loops, ground-shaking rhythms, and loads of other bells and whistles. Thanks to the vocals and memorable melody, the track has a slight bit of pop appeal, though it’s quickly traded in for rave-friendly club-tune-isms—making Redlight’s interpretation a peak-hour pleaser through and through.

Watch Pictureplane’s “True Ruin Light Body” Video

XLR8R Couldn't find the embed function for type: "vimeo" and source: "<embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=10214004&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="530" height="298">".

Isomorph label head Kate Moross directs this lengthy music video for Pictureplane‘s latest single, “True Ruin Light Body,” which was recently released by Moross’ label. For the video, she paired her art direction with video producer Hans Lo and graphic designer Jack Featherstone to properly execute the visuals accompanying Pictureplane’s new song. Footage of producer Travis Egedy was processed and rotoscoped before being laid over the bright shining lights that color in the video’s background, and graphic elements continue to be layered atop it all as the song itself becomes more dense with new sounds. The finished product is a simple counterpart for the track, and ideal for music rooted in the nostalgia of ’90s house.

To Rococo Rot “Fridays (Shackleton’s West Green Rd Remix)”

Skull Disco co-conspirator Shackleton crafted this shuffling, dubby remix for veteran IDM trio To Rococo Rot‘s (pictured above) recently released Forwardness Fridays EP. The original track comes from the outfit’s latest for Domino, Speculation, and actually closed out that record’s 10 tracks. Shackleton’s rework doesn’t sound too far from the atmospheric vibes and pattering rhythms of To Rococo Rot’s own production work, but regardless, there’s a certain je ne sais quoi that exists within the clicking beats and thick bass melodies that is obviously his own. The eight-minute tune was released alongside the album version of “Forwardness” and a remix of that track by Traversable Wormhole, all of which you can get ahold of here.

Watch El Guincho’s New Video for “Hindou”

This video for “Hindou,” taken from El Guincho‘s forthcoming Piratas de Sudamérica EP (released July 13 via Young Turks), splices together random, summery images with footage of a young boy dressed as a pirate rowing around with an older friend in a small boat. The two only go ashore for the boy to play some sort of wooden instrument with his fake, plastic hook and a found stick before heading back onto the water. The video’s playful nature, mixed with the shaky, amateur camera work, compliments El Guincho‘s own lighthearted approach to creating his warbled tropical music, and gives the whole milieu a heavy nostalgic feel—like the music and the video were both uncovered from a dusty attic somewhere in the Caribbean. You can check out more info on the new EP here. (via Discobelle)

DaVinci Talks Turf, Jail Time, and More Hometown News With The Bay Citizen

San Francisco’s latest break-out MC, DaVinci, recently talked with XLR8R freelancer David Downs for his insightful piece published today on The Bay Citizen. Downs and DaVinci touch on the many topics thoroughly covered in the MC’s debut album, The Day the Turf Stood Still, including the gentrification of his hometown neighborhood, The Fillmore, the underbelly of San Francisco, and his plight against violence within hip-hop music and culture. You can read the whole article here.

Eskmo, Jneiro Jarel, Exillon, and Starkey Contribute to the ‘Outer Spaces’ EP

Retronyms, an iPhone- and iPad-software developing company, brought together four producers from across the electronic music spectrum, and commissioned them to create tracks using only one of its touch-friendly musical tools, the DopplerPad. Music makers Eskmo, Starkey, Exillon, and Jneiro Jarel each wrote a tune for the free downloadable EP, called Outer Spaces. Also, in celebration of the brand-new EP, the going price for the DopplerPad app has gone down to $7.99 at the App Store. You can download Outer Spaceshere.

Becoming Real “The Thing”

In his write-up for DJ Elmoe‘s “Whea Yo Ghost At, Whea Yo Dead Man”, XLR8R Managing Editor Shawn Reynaldo wrote, “More songs like this, please.” It seems at least one producer, namely South London’s Becoming Real, might have taken heed. Though the producer (born Toby Ridler) isn’t making footwork/juke tunes per se, the same blend of house/techno influences, hip-hop rhythms, and tendency to drench beats in wonky sounds (vocal sample, percussion, synth, or otherwise) is at the center of his music. “The Thing” takes those ideas and applies them to the production aesthetic touted by forward-thinking dubstep producers, creating a style Ridler haphazardly coined “ghost step.” Really, Becoming Real’s production is a huge mess, though beautifully so; the song changes trajectories multiple times through its three minutes, sounds seem like they’re tossed in because he just wanted to hear what would happen, and at the end of it all he’s left you so confused you can’t help but go back to the beginning and try to make sense of it again.
