Ghostly International recording artist and XLR8R TV mainstay Christopher Willits has joined with Sound Arts and Gray Productions to produce his how-to program, What You Talkin’ Bout Willits—and the latest episode is available here! The show has long been a labor of love for Willits, as he’s always emphasized, “My objective with this series is to help expand your imagination, and excite your own creative process so that you can make what you love easier, and with a clearer intention.” For this edition, Willits sits down for another tutorial of Max for Live. This time, he introduces Livid Instruments’ Block controller, which was recently featured in our Components section, and the various tips and tricks for using the tools in tandem.

NYC Hip-hop/Graffiti Pioneer Rammellzee Dies, Cause Unknown

Yesterday, rumors floated around Twitter, MySpace, and various blogs about the untimely death of pioneering hip-hop/graffiti icon Rammellzee (a.k.a. RAMM?LLZ??). The suspicions have been confirmed that the seminal artist is indeed dead, but any details beyond that have yet to surface. Rammellzee’s passing is mourned by the many family members, friends, and fans who have been influenced by his music, art, and life over the past decades.

Kode9 “You Don’t Wash (Actress’ Negril Mix)”

The UK’s Actress (pictured above, we think) takes Kode9’s “You Don’t Wash” down a dubby, tropical path on his addition to the incoming remixes of the track. Marimbas, whistles, quick yelps, buzzing synths, assorted percussion, and a thumping four-on-the-floor beat make up the meat of the production, which would seem to continue on endlessly were it not for an eventual fade out. It’s quite a stretch from Martyn’s rework of the song, or even the original itself, but still manages to stick to Kode9’s initial vibe thanks to its dedication to non-stop polyrhythms and bulbous low-end.

Holy Fuck: With Their New Record, the Toronto Four-Piece Walks the Tightrope Between Live Energy and Studio Perfectionism.

Holy Fuck has spent the last six years developing a sublime brand of post-post-rock that owes as much to classic Krautrock and guitar nerdery as it does minimal techno. The Toronto-based quartet, led by Brian Borcherdt and Graham Walsh, built their sound on thoughtful improvisation, a wide palette of found instruments, and an untouchable live show. Recording their third long-player, Latin, in a barn in rural Ontario, Holy Fuck managed to capture their live, skronky intensity while retaining their math-rocky attention to detail. We caught up with Walsh to get the lowdown on how he distilled the band’s inimitable vibe.

XLR8R: How did the barn have an affect on the recording process?
Graham Walsh:
We’re very drawn to rural environments. I find that it’s just more relaxing to get out of the city, where there’s a lot of energy going on. That can be good, too, and that’s where a lot of our friends are, but sometimes I like to lessen the distractions and come out into nature. For the barn, we just booked four- or five-day chunks here and there. We’d go to the grocery store and buy supplies and then just stay in this barn, and just totally immerse ourselves.

As a band, Holy Fuck is known for its intense live show. Do you consider that when you’re in the studio?
With Latin, we have more of our live energy than we do on our past record. We did things this time where we played everything live in the studio and tried to get a take out of it. There is definitely something to be said about a band playing all together at once. Generally, I find that the energy, the vibe, and the excitement in the group is much greater. That’s an optimal situation. With this record, we did have a solid drummer and bass player that played on all of the songs, whereas on previous records we had a rotating cast. That added a uniformity to the songs.

But you’re obviously not against overdubs.
That’s the thing, it’s a balance. We recorded everything all together, all four of us. Then we were bringing the tracks back to Toronto and adding little details, fine carvings. There are certain things on the record that we wanted to pay a lot of attention to in terms of keyboard parts. You need a lot of focus on your own to hone in on those things. We were trying to meld the best of both of those worlds where we were trying to lay down as much as we could live off the floor and then adding those details afterward.

Is there an essential piece of equipment that you use for recording?
It is essential to get a good-sounding room. You don’t have to fix as much. It’s funny, you can get away with more if you’re recording in a really good-sounding room. I’ve done recordings in my basement at home and you have to wrestle with the sounds, but if you use a good-sounding room, most of your job is being taken care of. A room isn’t necessarily a piece of equipment, but I would say it’s definitely important.

What sort of set-ups did you use in your home studios?
Once Brian and I brought the bed tracks home, we were using our own Pro Tools LE systems, and running certain tracks through our pedal board set-ups. They contain various guitar EFX pedals (Boss, Moogerfooger, Frostwave, Lovetone, Diamond, DigiTech), and either a Mackie 1604 or an Alesis Multimix portable mixer for generating feedback loops, and overdriving to get a really awesome distortion.

Do you prefer to work with digital or analog gear?
There’s the whole Pro Tools-vs.-tape argument, and so far we’ve done everything with Pro Tools, which has become very invaluable to us. My experience with tape isn’t as extensive. My argument is that either one is a tool and it all depends on how you use it. You could hand somebody a tape machine and they could make a crappy-sounding record. You’re not automatically going to run your stuff through a tape machine and it will sound perfectly amazing. There are tons of great records made on Pro Tools and it’s amazing tool. You can track down the rabbit hole in Pro Tools, for sure, and that’s a negative side to it, and tape sounds good and there’s limitations to tape which are wonderful but it can also be a pain in the ass, too.

It seems like you’re looking for the right balance between live and studio as well as digital and analog.
I think that’s kind of a metaphor for how we create and make our art. It’s a giant balancing act, and an alchemy between certain elements. We’re combining certain things and seeing how they act and react together.

Audioelectronic “Two Trains Running (Swayzak “Bruhn’s Duhb”)”

Gustavo Lanzas (pictured above) doubles as the Nude Photo Music label head and Audioelectronic, veteran techno producer extraordinaire. His latest release, the Two Trains Running 12″, comes out July 14, and features remixes from DJ Caltrop, Chris Firenze, and here, Swayzak‘s David “Brun” Brown. Brown’s dub of “Two Trains Running” is an expectedly thumping, bass-heavy slow-cooker covered in distant synth melodies and sound effects, all delayed into hypnotic oblivion. The energy of the track ebbs and flows through its seven and a half minutes, but never loses its interplanetary traveling vibe.

Eliot Lipp‘s and Leo 123‘s Dark Party project just dropped a brand-new EP, entitled Patrol Patrol. The release comes complete with two original tunes and a couple remixes from Mux Mool and Michna, and now, only a week afterwards, we’ve got this fresh music video for the EP’s title track. Leo’s little brother, Bruce Illest, directed the video, which follows a renegade cop car from the early ’80s through all kinds of unruly adventures. The lo-fi VHS footage fits the song’s old-school vibe well, especially once the flashing red light becomes airborne, rides a roller coaster, and chases some scantily clad ladies down a water slide. This is one ride-a-long we definitely wouldn’t mind going on.

Au Revoir Simone “Another Likely Story (Neon Indian Remix)”

For his remix of Brooklyn trio Au Revoir Simone‘s “Another Likely Story,” young producer Alan Palomo delivers a patently lo-fi rendition inspired by driving, cosmic Italo-disco under his Neon Indian moniker. A motorik synth bassline soaked in phaser effects and hyper-compressed drum beats provide the track’s backbone, providing enough stability to allow the warbling melodies and thinly layered vocals to waft about at will. It all adds up to a much darker sound than usual for Neon Indian, but it’s particularly nice to hear him back to his old tricks after that strangely ‘well-produced’ number he did for Green Label Sound.

The Night Light remix album, which also contains productions from Aeroplane, Clock Opera, Bass Clef, and more, is out July 5.

Richie Hawtin’s Gear Jacked in France

Yesterday, on Richie Hawtin’s Facebook profile, the DJ/producer announced that he’d been the victim of theft last Friday night in Paris. While staying at Hotel Costes during his Plastikman tour, someone broke into his room and made off with a whole load of expensive hardware necessary for his live performances. On Friday night someone broke into my hotel room at Hotel Costes in Paris and stole my iPod and 2 x Plastikman Live iPads (serial #GB01723UZ38 and #GB0129CAZ3A) and my Plastikman Live show Apple Macbook Pro 17″ laptop (serial #C02CK0GXDC7C). I am asking everyone to keep their ears and eyes open for any information about these very important and personal items.
