Onra “The One (Feat. T3 from Slum Village)”

Last week, we offered up a streaming preview of Long Distance, the latest effort from boogie-minded French producer Onra. The 21-track opus has plenty of memorable moments, but few rhymes, as it’s a mostly instrumental effort. But when MCs do pop up on the record, the results are incredibly natural. On “The One,” T3 of much-missed Detroit outfit Slum Village—who incidentally have a new album on the way—builds on the upbeat vibe of Onra’s funky grooves, lending the track an old-school summertime feel. Now that temperatures are heating up, feel free put this tune on at your local backyard BBQ—we promise, no one is going to be upset.

Apple Pips Releases Latest from Joe

Appleblim has been using Joe‘s “Untitled” as a secret weapon in sets for months now, so it’s no surprise that his Apple Pips label is set to release the track along with “Digest,” a more experimental B-side, this July. Merging a minimal sensibility with jungle funk and hints of grime, the Hessle-associated producer’s tracks are pleasing in both the contexts of the bedroom and the dancefloor, as they straddle the line between head music and body music perfectly.

Joe’s Untitled/Digest 12″ comes out in July.

Snag a Free Mix and Brand-New Track from Kode9

Hyperdub headmaster and DJ/producer extraordinaire Kode9 took over a small corner of the internet today with some free downloadable goodies. He put together an exclusive mix for FACT, which comes a couple weeks before his contribution to !K7‘s DJ-KiCKS series, and about 10 days before his Off-Sonar party with Ikonika, Darkstar, Cooly G, and more at Club Mondo in Barcelona. The mix is a smoothly executed DJ set featuring “mostly ’94-’96 jungle” artists such as DJ SS, Lemon D, and Urban Jungle. Also premiering today is a free original production taken from Kode9’s forthcoming mix album for !K7, “You Don’t Wash (Dub).” That download is available here, and you can check out the FACT mix here.

Charles Trees “Mahjongg”

Ann Arbor’s Charles Trees contributed some synth-laden, blap-leaning dance tunes to a new string of EPs from the Musique Large label. The series is called Tour de Table, and this track, “Mahjongg,” comes from Trees’ The Dream EP. It starts out with a terse melody that sounds quite a bit like the theme song to The Exorcist, but that quickly gives way to a drum machine clap and head-knocking kick drum doing all they can to make you sway. Heaps of synths are tossed throughout the mix alongside swirling sound effects—giving “Mahjongg” a strong Lil John Lost in Space vibe.

Get Lost in Joshue Ott and Morgan Packard’s Thicket iPhone/iPad Application

Thicket is a new app for the iPhone/iPad by Anticipate artists Joshue Ott and Morgan Packard. Combining their individual styles in interactive visuals and sound, respectively, they have increasingly been channeling their performance, production, and programming expertise into a shared workspace that supports each direction.

The app is an audiovisual world of texture, movement, line, and tone. Spending time with Thicket, the user creates sonic and visual patterns within a space of warm, bright tones and evolving, elegant scrawls. Working with gesture to affect audio and visual responses, Thicket brings a playful, tactile intuitiveness to a world that might otherwise require a higher learning curve. Equally amenable to casual playing, intense exploration, or performance (the iPad version supports VGA output), Thicket is open-ended enough to allow discovery within its defined landscape. Check out some videos of the app in action after the jump!

Download the app for $1.99 at the iTunes store now.

BKLYN Yard Closes its Doors, Sunday Best Moves on

In an unfortunate turn of events, New York’s multi-purpose event space BKLYN Yard was forced to shut its doors and cancel all of its scheduled events, including the awesome Sunday Best concert series. The production company behind the Yard, MeanRed, was refused a continuance on its lease, and was asked to take down everything it had built up in its Carroll Gardens home that made the spot so unique. On the loss of this space, MeanRed shared, “BKLYN Yard is a labor of love for MeanRed, rooted in our core company values: love for artists, food, music, and community. We are sad to see our passion project go in its brightest year, and are sad to let down all the people who have supported and worked with us for the past three summers.” Sunday Best will continue on with its schedule tentatively at the Little Field space, so be on the lookout for the next spot MeanRed decides to pop up.

Outbox: Thomas Fehlmann

Calling Thomas Fehlmann anything but a legend would be a gross misstep. The veteran ambient techno producer has been releasing music since the early ’80s—an era verging on “vintage”—on a varied list of respectable labels, both solo and with Alex Paterson as The Orb. Now in his 50s, Fehlmann recently embarked on a new endeavor: composing the soundtrack to German reality TV show 24H Berlin. From those sessions, Fehlmann’s latest album, Gute Luft, was born. We snagged the painfully serious techno progenitor for a chance to e-chat about his first concert, what song people should remember him for, and why he’d like Brangelina with him on a desert island.

What sounds do you hear while you’re answering these questions?
The fridge, passing cars, a few raindrops, the rumble of the city in the distance, and the scratching of my ears on my hoodie.

What are the earliest bands you remember listening to as a child?
I only knew The Beatles for a good while. Then I liked The Mothers of Invention and Traffic. Later, Led Zeppelin. That was also my first-ever concert. Memorable!

What were your hobbies as a kid growing up in Zürich?
Exploring the nearby woods, playing guitar, collecting records, copying Picasso paintings.

Any embarrassing moments from performing live?
The sudden failure of the power supply in front of approximately 6,000 people at the Benicassim Festival was pretty embarrassing.

It’s a few hours before you go on at a massive festival. What are you doing before you go on stage?
[Taking] a power nap.

What’s the best meal to eat the morning after a night of heavy drinking?
Porridge with fruit, nuts, and honey.

Describe your music in three words.
Sexy ear candy.

Is it odd being surrounded by kids half your age when you perform?
Odd? What are you talking about? I didn’t notice that yet. : ) It’s another beautiful aspect of music to make those clichés redundant.

You’re secluded on a desert island. Name five albums, four movies, three books, two people, and one beverage that you take with you.
Albums: Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew, Brian Eno’s Another Green World, Wolfgang Voigt’s GAS, The Mothers of Invention’s Uncle Meat, and Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature.
Movies: Federico Fellini for the fantasy, François Truffaut for the heart, Quentin Tarantino for the fun, and David Lynch for the mystery.
Books: David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest, G.I. Gurdjieff’s All and Everything, and Robert Musil’s The Man Without Qualities.
People: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, because they would come with a helicopter.
Beverage: Sake (provided water would already be there).

You’re asked to do a Kraftwerk tribute album. What songs would you cover with The Orb? What songs would you do under your solo moniker?
I don’t like the idea as such, but if I had to, I would choose material from the first three albums that still have not been re-released. With The Orb, I’d do “Kling Klang.” On my own, I’d do “Tanzmusik” from Ralf und Florian.

If you could’ve spent your life doing anything outside of music, what would it have been?
I guess I would be working in visual arts. That’s where I initially came from.

If you could choose one of your songs to live on as your legacy, which would it be?
“Du Fehlst Mir” from Vision of Blah.

How did the soundtrack for the 24H Berlin TV show become Gute Luft?
With a massive pair of digital scissors and lots of green tea.

Listen to “Permanent Touch” off of Gute Loft which is out now on Kompakt.

Casiokids “En Vill Hest (diskJokke Remix)”

If you didn’t think the happy-go-lucky pop tunes from Norway’s Casiokids could get anymore upbeat and danceable, this new remix from fellow countryman diskJokke (pictured above) just might change your mind. diskJokke’s remix follows the treatment handed over from his Balearic-inspired cohort Prins Thomas, which we posted here. Not so surprisingly, lead singer Ketil Kinden Endresen’s high-pitched vocal delivery fits the producer’s buoyant disco stylings quite well, and remain a constant during the nine-minute jam’s epic journey through rhythmic synth stabs, funky bass lines, and more percussion than most producers would know what to do with.

Casiokids’ Topp Stemning På Lokal Bar is out tomorrow on Polyvinyl.

Mugwump “The Congregation of Discalced Clerks”

From The Rapture-run record label Throne of Blood comes this funky, Italo-tinged dance tune. Belgian producer Mugwump crafted the song as the lead number for his forthcoming two-song EP, and it’s easy to tell why; the song kicks off right away, immediately setting a slyly serious tone with arppeggiated synths, rubbery bass riffs, and a backbeat tailor-made for folks looking to flex some fancy footwork. But that’s all prior to a tense string section taking over the whole track, and transporting it into spatial oblivion before taking it back to the initial groove.
