Koobra “Thrills”

Finnish disco-house producer Koobra‘s music aims straight for the dancefloor, not unlike his work with Helsinki 78-82. But while that project aims towards the DIY raves populated by todays’ youth, his solo moniker is slanted more towards a futuristic 1980s night club. On “Thrills,” filtered pad synths, spacey arpeggiated melodies, and bouncing bass lines all work in tandem over a simple dance beat to effectively harken to a realm where Blade Runner and The Running Man are more fact than fiction.

Jamie Lidell Shares New Video For “I Wanna Be Your Telephone”

Not long after the release of Jamie Lidell‘s latest album of wonky, electronically minded soul music, Compass, and following the pretty rad footage found in his piece for “The Ring,” comes this new video for the hard-hitting, funky single “I Wanna Be Your Telephone.” Images of Lidell and an anonymous (and quite attractive) burlesque dancer dancing about all strange and playfully in front of a red curtain is basically all there is to see during the video’s three and a half minutes, but the music is great enough (and did we mention that girl is damn cute?) that we’d allow nearly anything to accompany its infectious grooves. Check out the video below, along with a list of Lidell’s forthcoming tour dates.

Rinse Releasing Compilation of UK Funky Hits

From the collective hub of forward-thinking house and bass music, Rinse, comes a new compilation encompassing the top contemporary jams heard throughout the UK’s dancefloors. The release, entitled I Love Funky, is comprised of two discs, each mixed by a separate DJ. Supa D handles the first mix, MA1 (above) the second, and artists the likes of Zinc, Roska, and Major Lazer make appearances on the compilation. I Love Funky will be released July 19.

It’s a Fine Line “Hen’s Bells”

No joke, it takes seven minutes for this track to really take off. That’s twice the length of most songs coming out these days, so we understand if your patience wears thin, but if you give “Hen’s Bells” by It’s a Fine Line a chance, it will reward you with its warped Italo sensibilities. The project is a collaboration between ex-Black Strobe member Ivan Smagghe and buddy Tim Paris, who will be digitally releasing a self-titled EP on June 4. Though not on the EP, “Hen’s Bells” is a fair representation of the duo’s style: motorik bass lines, wobbly synth melodies, and pounding dance beats all working to transport you to another time and, possibly, another place.

Podcast 141: Matt Shadetek

XLR8R has an unofficial rule that we never let artists do our podcast twice. The way we see it, there are just too many fine DJs, producers, and artists out there for us to start running repeats. Yet we’re willing to make an exception for Matt Shadetek, not just because we love his Brooklyn-based blends of gully beats and bass-loaded riddims from around the globe, but also because last year’s excellent Full Hundred mixtape with Jahdan Blakkamoore was more of a showcase of the latter’s talents—Shadetek was simply the guy stringing the beats together while Blakkamoore’s dancehall croon shined through. Now that Shadetek has an album of his own on the way—Flowers, which drops next week on the Dutty Artz imprint he runs with DJ /rupture—we figured that it was time for the limelight to shine directly on him. Luckily for everyone, he comes correct with a banging mix that perfectly captures the Dutty Artz spirit; there’s dancehall, UK funky, grime, unreleased gems, and plenty of Shadetek’s own productions too. Tune in and get dutty.

Cold Cave “Life Magazine (Delorean Remix)”

Well, here’s another name to add to the already long and totally rad list of artists to remix Cold Cave‘s “Life Magazine” single. The boys in Delorean pooled their collective efforts to devise this take on the shadowy pop track. The results could be described with any number of indie music’s favorite buzz words of the moment (summery, dreamy, poppy, hazy… take your pick), but we’d prefer to just say that we’re not surprised Delorean have delivered, yet again, another brilliant, atmosphere-heavy Balearic dance tune that would surely lift our spirits if ever given the chance.

Cop a Free DJ Mix From Shlohmo

Over on his WEDIDIT Collective blog, beat-making youngster Shlohmo shared a fresh DJ set he threw together for SoCal online radio station BTS Radio back at the end of May. Shlohmo BTS Radio Mix features an impressive list of beat heads throughout its 37 minutes of wonky goodness. Catch tracks from Baths, Jonwayne, Infinitirock, Jeremiah Jae, and a bit of Shlohmo remixery in his warbly mixtape, available here.

The Acorn “Restoration (Four Tet Remix)”

It’s no secret that Four Tet is one of electronic music’s more ‘indie’-minded producers, or, at the very least, one of the electronic music producers most beloved by the ‘indie’ crowd, so remixing a song for Canadian quintet The Acorn should prove ideal for Mr. Kieran Hebden and his fans. Here we have Four Tet’s version of “Restoration” from The Acorn’s forthcoming third album, No Ghost. Hebden’s rework twinkles with the same warm analog glow of his past productions and, at times, seems as if it could’ve been ripped straight from his last album, the wonderful There Is Love in You—it has the same slow-bubbling melodies, subtly tweaked vocal samples, and shuffling acoustic drum beat heard in many of Four Tet’s greatest songs.

DOOM to Release Live Album

The metal-faced man now known only as DOOM is set to drop his second live album in his double-decade career as a consistently interesting MC. The forthcoming release is called Expektoration, and features recordings taken from an as-yet-undisclosed NY performance, including renditions of classic DOOM tracks “Kon Karne,” “Accordion,” and “Change the Beat.” Along with DOOM’s inimitable flows, his alter-ego King Geedorah and cohort Big Benn Klingon also make appearances. More info on the release—which is ready to drop September 14 via Gold Dust—can be found on the Expektoration micro-site, here.
