Buraka Som Sistema compatriot J-Wow just dropped his debut single on Mad Decent, entitled “O Dedo,” which comes with remixes from Bird Peterson and SBTRKT. Here, we are treated to a video for the new track—directed by found-footage hound Erik Devro—of some wigged-out tribesmen getting downright frightening on the midday, communal psychedelic-rave tip. The disturbingly entertaining footage matches the percussive dance tune from J-Wow just fine. (via FADER)

Hanuman “Bola (Star Eyes Remix)”

Musical multi-tasker Hanuman (who doubles as half of Monkey Steak and runs Steak House Records) is set to drop his latest track, “Bola,” on Chicago’s Sleazetone label. Included along with the even-keeled, dub-heavy original version are remixes from Kanji Kinetic, Thunderous Olympian, Sleazetone label head Chrissy Murderbot, and, here, XLR8R alum and Trouble & Bass spinstress Star Eyes (pictured above). On her remix, she decided to run with the underlying UK funky sound, and treat “Bola” to an extra helping of thick, juicy low end before introducing her own string-based melody to the propulsive house beat.

Hello, this is a message from the law offices of Culture, Music & Film. I’m writing you in regards to a class-action lawsuit on behalf of director Chris Cunningham, the makers of The Blair Witch Project, the Species franchise, and people with respectable taste in music and film everywhere. Your video for the song “Corporate Occult” by Huoratron, which was directed by one Cédric Blaisbois, is in violation of a number of ethical and aesthetic codes set forth by artists who aim to uphold a standard of decency for audio-visual art presented to people who love good music and film. In addition, you are being charged with plagiarism and blatant copyright infringement of the intellectual properties of the director and films I represent. You will cease and desist all use of shaky, night-vision camera work, all motifs of females inexplicably turning into aliens, vampires, vagina dentata, or monster of any kind, and any low-budget CGI effects used to further such “techniques.” We also ask that you stop utilizing shock tactics (i.e. outright pornography, violence, and gore) to sell people on a song that has no place in music history, or even the internet for that matter. Your speedy compliance and restitution for all in the amount of “five minutes and 27 seconds of our lives back” is requested. Thank you.

Jenny Wilson “Only Here for the Fight”

Funny story: I’m out in Stockholm one night with skweee guys Rigas Den Andre and Limonious. They’re like, “Hey, we’re gonna go see our friend Jenny Wilson play. Do you know her?” And I’m like, “Yeah, of course I know her!” So we get to the Strand theater, and Wilson comes on with her band of gospel singers… and it hits me: I don’t know Jenny Wilson at all. (Cuz I was thinking Jenny Lewis the whole time.) But Wilson’s rich R&B vocals and gorgeous piano and horn arrangements instantly have the crowd rapt, and everyone—including me—is happy. Maybe not the usual XLR8R fare, but we still wholeheartedly approve. Hardships! is out August 24.

Disco-Edit Pioneer Walter Gibbons Gets Retrospective From Strut

Walter Gibbons, the man responsible for originating the reel-to-reel edit, which gave way to the now ubiquitous art of remixing, is finally being honored for his pioneering work as a DJ and producer with a forthcoming retrospective from compilation and re-issue label Strut. Entitled Jungle Music: Essential & Unreleased Remixes 1976-1986, the double-disc release features early work from Gibbons when he was first allowed access to artists’ multi-track tapes to craft songs from groups like Double Exposure, Salsoul Orchestra, and Gladys Knight into his own, and subsequently release them on his own 12″ records. Other parts of the compilation focus on his work in the ’80s, setting the groundwork for electro and house with mixes for the likes of Strafe, Arthur Russell, and Dinosaur L. Head over here to stay tuned on further developments before the release comes out July 20, and check out the artwork and tracklist below.

Frank-n-Dank’s Frank Nitt Releases Debut Solo EP

J. Dilla collaborator and half of Detroit’s gritty rap duo Frank-n-Dank, Frank Nitt just released his debut solo EP, Jewels In My Backpack, on Delicious Vinyl. The six-song offering follows the veteran MC’s four albums with partner Dankery Harv, and features production work with one-time Snoop Dogg, Talib Kweli, and Warren G collaborator Terrace Martin. Nitt said of the marriage of his and Martin’s styles, “[Martin’s] much more glossy than where I come from. His production has a shinier sound, which are the jewels. And here I am as this underground artist, a backpack MC who can rock over these jewels.” Watch the video for Jewels‘ first single, “Go Girl feat. Problem,” here, and get your hands on the new release here.

Slater & Lime “Creepin”

Two of the most recognizable names on NY’s Trouble & Bass label, AC Slater and Drop the Lime shacked up recently in LA to bring you a handful of collaborative productions, the first of which is this new jam. If “Creepin” is anything it’s, uh, creepy. Between the piano melody sounding like it’s jacked from Friday the 13th, Luca Venezia’s unsolicited vocal come-ons, and the down-pitched sound effects that adorn the punchy beats, Slater & Lime‘s premiere offering sets the stage for an act ready to soundtrack a rave scene during the climax of an unseen John Carpenter flick.

Hear a Random, Unreleased Track From Flying Lotus

Not long after the release of his highly touted third album, Cosmogramma, LA beat don Flying Lotus let loose with this unreleased bit of music from his hard drive via his Twitter account, tweeting, “I forgot to give you this…”. “Heave (n)”—which is currently only available as a streaming YouTube video (shown above)—isn’t necessarily one of FlyLo’s shape-shifting opuses, but it is a calming, relatively melodic afterthought from the onslaught of ideas showcased in his new record. And really, we’re pretty much happy to hear whatever productions Mr. Ellison is willing to share.

Stream the New Solvent Album

It’s been six years since Toronto-based artist Solvent released a proper full-length, but all that ends today with the release of Subject to Shift, his latest effort for the venerable Ghostly label. The album is available for purchase on iTunes, but XLR8R is offering the chance to preview the entire album right here on our website. A quick listen will show that although a number of years have passed, Solvent’s penchant for robotically emotive electro-pop hasn’t waned a bit.

The XLR8R Music Player requires Adobe Flash Player version 9 or later. Click here to install.
