Skream to Release New Album in July

Long-time dubstep icon Skream is set to follow up the release of his self-titled debut with his next album of bass music gems, Outside the Box. The forthcoming 14-track album comes four years after the DJ/prdoucer’s last full-length dropped, and will be released by the same label, Tempa. The new record is said to cover many of electronic dance music’s bases, including a hip-hop track with LA MC Murs, a tribal-rhythm-heavy number with La Roux, high-octane jungle tunes, and plenty low-end-centric dubstep. Check out this bit from Outside the Box, a radio rip of “Listening to the Records on My Wall,” below.

B. Bravo “Computa Love”

This bit of future-boogie brilliance from SF-based producer B. Bravo is catching a re-release on a forthcoming compilation from BBC Radio 1 personality Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label (who also had Bravo interviewed recently on his website). Brownswood Electric is a beat-centric affair focusing on up-and-coming producers from across the US and UK’s satellite electronic music scenes, which also includes tracks from the likes of DevonWho, Shlohmo, Mount Kimbie, and Mosca. B. Bravo’s contribution, the title song from his previously released second EP for Frite Nite, Computa Love, opens the 15-track release with a thick, confident bass groove, slow-knocking beat, and loads of shimmering synth tones floating all around the smooth rhythm.

New Release From Ill Blu Coming on Hyperdub

News of more chilly dance grooves hitting our ears via Hyperdub just surfaced. UK DJ/producer duo Ill Blu has prepped two new jams for the bass-dealing label, entitled “Bellion” and “Dragon Pop.” Each track flexes a particularly minimal style of future-house/UK funky that leans a bit more towards the darker, less-soulful end of the dance music spectrum, and focuses almost completely on rhythm, save for a basic bass synth or steel-drum melody. You can grab Ill Blu’s new 12″ early this July.

Preview Lil Silva’s New Night Slugs EP

Next week, L-Vis 1990 and Bok Bok’s Night Slugs label continues its reign atop Next-Level Awesomeness Mountain with the release of Lil Silva‘s Night Skanker EP. The six-track EP finds the young UK producer combining energetic, grime-influenced funky percussion with punchy synth melodies, and the results are spectacular. In advance of the EP’s release, the Night Slugs crew has passed along the first two songs for us to preview on the XLR8R website. And to celebrate the label’s fourth record, they’re throwing another one of those events that make us say, “Why the fuck don’t we live in London?” as Lil Silva, L-Vis 1990, and Bok Bok will be playing and partying alongside Chicago juke master DJ Rashad, Girl Unit, and Jam City. The flyer with all the details is posted below, as is the EP artwork and our streaming audio player.

Elusive front man of Pennsylvania’s psychedelic pop collective Black Moth Super Rainbow, Tobacco, has a bit on his plate as of late. The relatively anonymous fella is barely a week away from dropping his latest solo effort, Maniac Meat, and will be following up the release with a couple of weeks spent on the road sporting his wares. And just in case the previously shared “Sweatmother” and Beck-featured “Fresh Hex” leaks weren’t enough for you, another taste is available from Meat in the form of “Six Royal Vipers,” which is available here. We Are Standard “Don’t Give Up (John Talabot Slowing It Down Remix)”

We Are Standard (pictured) may be stuck in a time when Franz Ferdinand ruled the hearts of indie kids, but John Talabot performs a breathtaking and new turn on this remix of “Don’t Give Up.” The track is slowed and given a nice proto-house kick along with pulsing synths that recall KZA, or even the early lushness of Luciano. The original’s vocals are almost nowhere to be found except in a pitched-up recurring snippet, and shimmering harmonies cascade towards the piece’s end. Quite impressive work from one of Spain’s best new exports! (via Pitchfork)

Hudson Mohawke Chats by the Fire with Red Bull Music Academy

Glaswegian beat-making wunderkind and one of XLR8R‘s favorite saviors of music last year, Hudson Mohawke has long been a producer of interest for this publication. His recent remix for UK grime icon Wiley sent our heads spinning with its alter-dimensional rave sound, and now here’s something a bit more personal from the beatsmith. The man known to mum as Ross Birchard sat down with Red Bull Music Academy to take part in the institution’s ongoing “Fireside Chat” series (which recently featured Caribou, as well), and delivered an illuminating dissertation on the history of his DJ career, how he learned to produce his kind of soulful wonky beats, joining the LuckyMe and Warp labels, and where he hopes to take Hudson Mohawke in the future. Listen to that talk, which is interspersed with a veritable chronology of HudMo-related tracks, here.

Asura “Manzanita”

Another addition to Los Angeles’ near-capacity beat scene, Asura sent over this track from his recently released self-titled debut LP, which is also the first album from LA label Non Projects. “Manzanita” takes its time to introduce any kind of rhythm; the whole first minute and a half is void of drum sounds, and is filled instead with thick atmospheric noise, delayed guitars, and a distant, muffled booming. As far as beat music goes, the classically trained Asura seems to be one of the most interested in melody, mood, and, surprisingly, singing along with his bedroom productions.
