Two artists will be giving away a free MP3 each week leading up to the festival through Bleep’s website. The giveaway kicks off with a jam from UK funky icon Roska and one from psychedelic electronic duo Fuck Buttons, with music from King Midas Sound, The Blessings, 2020 Soundsystem, Broadcast, Sandwell District, and Hudson Mohawke to follow soon after. Randomer & Fife “Slum City (Eliphino’s West Green Road Remix)”

The original version of this track comes from a collaborative two-song 12″ from UK music making buddies Randomer & Fife, released yesterday on the re-launched Fat! label. Fellow UK tunesmith Eliphino keeps the original’s vibe intact on his percussion-heavy remix of the bouncing future-house track, but heaps on a handful of extra samples and sound effects—effectively eliminating what little negative space had once been there.

Cop the New Major Lazer & La Roux Mixtape For Free Tomorrow

We’ve heard a few bits of info through the grapevine that Switch and Diplo have been working on the next Major Lazer album, but it seems in the middle of those sessions, the nu-dancehall duo had some time to team up with the singer from UK electro-pop outfit La Roux for this upcoming free mixtape. The productions were put together by Major Lazer on a recent trip to Jamaica before Elly Jackson lent her voice to the mixes, which also includes guest spots from Gucci Mane, Drake, Gyptian, Rusko, and Amanda Blank. Podcast 139: Doc Daneeka

Okay, we’ll admit it. In the past few months, XLR8R has gone mad for Welsh producer Doc Daneeka. He’s been profiled in our Bubblin’ section, his Deadly Rhythm EP kicked off new Ramp sub-label PTN in style, and his own Ten Thousand Yen imprint is bringing even more high-quality, percussion-heavy funky to the table. Don’t believe us? Check out our preview of the label’s first release. At this rate, we’re going to crown Doc Daneeka the King of Wales by year’s end. As part of the ongoing coronation, the young artist has been selected to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series, and, as expected, he’s delivered a true scorcher stuffed with rattling drums and punchy low end, not to mention a number of new and unreleased tunes. Give it a listen and then mark your calendars for June 4, as we’ve invited Doc Daneeka to make his first US appearance at our monthly TURRBOTAX® party alongside Trouble & Bass’ Star Eyes and incredible Brooklyn outfit Blondes. See? We told you that we loved this guy.

Mirror People “Rare Jewels”

Rui Maia, who also records under the moniker of Maia, is now operating under the Mirror People alias. The Portuguese producer certainly has a knack for the tropical-tinged, slightly psychedelic disco that Bear Funk loves, and “Rare Jewels” is no exception. With a bouncing bass, a synthesized steel-drum melodic line, and dreamy synths creating a lush sonic jungle, the piece is an instant earworm that could easily have appeared on one of Sergio Mendes’ ’80s disco experiments. A breathy female vocal would send it over the top, but as it is, “Rare Jewels” is a delight that makes one even more excited for Maia’s upcoming 12″ on Permanent Vacation. In the meantime, Mirror People’s The Heart of the Sun EP is available for free download right here.

Jahcoozi Barefoot Wanderer

If the band-name pun doesn’t tip you off as to Jahcoozi‘s, um, energy, singer Sasha Perera will not leave you in the dark for long. “Skankin barefoot be a global movement,” she coos on “Barefoot Dub,” Barefoot Wanderer‘s first track, “gotta find a place for a barefoot temple.” You won’t need the remaining 10 tracks to figure out that this temple’s location is not far from Black Rock City. Apart from the Modeselektor-y globs of party bass arranged by Robot Koch and Oren Gerlitz, this Berlin trio stands out on Ellen Allien’s label for their self-aware, global eclecticism.

The Sri Lankan Perera has been perhaps unfairly compared to M.I.A. A more accurate comparison might be made with Brazilian Girls’ Sabina Sciubba, whose wordplay and upfront sensuality are clearly influences on the band’s persona. The vibe’s not quite right, though. Sonically rich, the songs still seem to struggle for reasons to exist, grasping at (surprise) lame puns to buoy limp jams like “Lost in the Bass” or emptily preaching to the nonconformist choir on “Read the Books.” Jahcoozi only connects with the help of former Antipop Consortium member M. Sayyid on “Powerdown Blackout,” which sells its silliness by owning up to it.

The problem on Barefoot Wanderer is trying to re-start a party or bring back a conversation that was never a great idea in the first place—that Jahcoozi must be filled with lentils and Veuve Clicquot. It’s not that the singing and production style are heading in different directions, but that the former’s predictability doesn’t encourage us to listen more closely. Self-satisfaction isn’t a good look with half-baked multiculturalism; there’s burner appeal here, and little else.

Kristin Miltner “Dreaming Longing”

Due to popular demand, Asthmatic Kitty is soldiering on with two additional volumes of their Library Catalog Music series. Volume 7 was put together by Instruments of Science & Technology (a.k.a. Richard Swift), while direction of the 8th installment was handed to Oakland sound designer and electronic musician Kristin Miltner. “Dreaming Longing” is the first offering from her Music for Dreaming and Playing record, and its sound isn’t exactly easy to describe. Imagine the most beautiful CD skip in the known universe, stretch it for nearly 8 minutes, add extra bleeps and etheral vocals to the mix, and you might have an approximation of what Miltner’s piece sounds like, but this doesn’t do “Dreaming Longing” justice. A soft journey to another world, the track is like Yasunao Tone on laudanum, which is certainly a good thing.

Watch Dust La Rock Talk Art, Design, and Video Work

XLR8R Couldn't find the embed function for type: "vimeo" and source: "<embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=11171124&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="530" height="298">".

Fool’s Gold in-house graphic artist Dust La Rock (a.k.a. Joshua Prince) recently contributed a bit of video work to the ongoing Scion Installation series. Before the tour finishes its final leg June 4 at Eastern District in Brooklyn, Scion interviewed La Rock—one of 10 contributing artists, including Eric Nakamura, Saelee Oh, Funeral Fog, PMKFA, Thomas Subreville, Josh Graham, Monihan Monihan, Sage Vaughn, and Mark Mothersbaugh, whom XLR8R also featured in its pages—to get the scoop on what his part of the installation is all about. Check out the conversation, which is mixed with bits of La Rock’s video piece, above.

Teen Daze “New Theory (Washed Out Cover)”

It’s hard to quantify, but it seems like John Hughes movies really did a fucking number on a huge swath of the human populace—at least folks between the ages of 18 and 45. How else can you explain Teen Daze, whose sentimental electronic bliss-pop often sounds like something from the soundtrack to 17 Candles: Long Duk Dong’s Revenge? Here the young Vancouver producer covers “New Theory,” the original of which appeared on Washed Out‘s Life of Leisure EP. And while the music’s cultural reference points might be familiar, we’d be lying if we said that this didn’t touch some warm, squishy place inside and make us want to overcome some teen-angst-related struggles. Dizzee Rascal Premieres ‘Dirtee’ New Video

“Dirtee Disco” is the new single from grime stalwart-turned-club MC Dizzee Rascal‘s forthcoming release, Tongue ‘n Cheek Dirtee Deluxe Edition. The video itself has a funny-enough concept: Dizzee is hanging out with a bunch of grans at what looks like a church hall’s dull senior mixer, which eventually turns into a ragingly weird dance party. But what’s most interesting about this video is Dizzee’s commentary on the making of the whole thing, interspersed throughout its 10 minutes.

Tongue ‘n Cheek Dirtee Deluxe Edition is out May 31 via Dirtee Stank.
