BD1982 “Let’s Talk Math”

Yokohama’s BD1982 has a new album out now, and if the title single below is any indication, Let’s Talk Math promises to be one of the most interesting funky, bass-driven records of the year. Featuring heavily-delayed synth-guitar plucks, lushly-vocoded vocal elements, and a daring near-tribal percussion sound, “Let’s Talk Math” is fluid enough that it could fit into anything, from a Villalobos set to a Starkey mixtape. BD1982 performs quite a feat here, proving that bass music need not always contain subsonic throbs to work wonders on a dancefloor.

Podcast 132: My Cousin Roy

New York’s reignited love affair with disco has been going strong for more than a decade now, and My Cousin Roy has been right in the thick of it. As head of the Wurst label, Roy has played a key role in the scene’s thriving re-edit culture while also overseeing some of NY’s most legendary parties. This past winter he was holed up in the studio, often with fellow NYC DJ/producer Nick Chacona, with whom he operates under the name Beg to Differ. But now that spring has arrived, more releases from Wurst and Beg to Differ—some of which are previewed in this exclusive mix—are on the way. In the meantime, My Cousin Roy is in Europe, where he’s kicking off a tour this week. For those of us on this side of the pond, we’ll have to tide ourselves over with this hour-long mix of disco, house, electro-funk, and more until the man returns Stateside.

B.R.U.C.E. “The Wallet (Tom Trago’s Souljack Remix)”

Though the vocal sample might be a bit tired—after all, we don’t really need to hear another asshole intoning about the awesomeness of money—the instrumental elements of both Tom Trago‘s remix are jacking enough to make up for it. Trago’s remix is especially nice, as it takes the more minimal stems of the original and transforms the piece into a Chicago-style electro-house track with a nice shuffle moving throughout and a shimmering synth apex that recalls The Youngsters’ “Rock to the Bit.” In the end, the vocals on the “The Wallet” make it a great track to get early crowds onto a dancefloor, but an instrumental version of Trago’s remix would also be welcome.

Robot Koch “Listen To Them Fade (feat. Grace)”

Many words come to mind when first listening to the title track of the latest EP from Robot Koch, Listen To Them Fade, but “massive” seems to stand as the most appropriate. Booming toms, kick drums, and all sorts of percussive sounds and unfamiliar utterances start things off—sounding like the beginning of a ceremonial sacrifice on Mars—before the song eventually morphs into a more recognizable dubstep banger. Mexican singer Grace‘s soulful voice is featured prominently through “Fade,” and acts as a sort of connection between the real world and Koch’s tumultuous sonic environment.

Nocando Jimmy the Lock

When it comes to Los Angeles’ music scene, there’s no avoiding the heralded cipher circle Project Blowed and beat-head bastion Low End Theory. Nocando‘s debut, Jimmy the Lock, lives in both worlds. With a fully automatic delivery full of wig-splitting wordplay, the battle-tested Blowedian fires inventive, idiosyncratic, and unpredictable rhymes. Topics range from navigating LA life on “Exploits and Glitches” to sex with minors on the R. Kelly homage “Skankophelia” to the pains of love on “Flight Risk,” where he ends up in his bathroom masturbating to a picture of his girlfriend with a gun in his hand. Clearly, he’s much more than just a battle rapper, and LA’s finest help accentuate this point, as Jimmy the Lock features abstract, blunted bangers full of warbly synths, dynamic drums, and guttural, pounding bass by Nosaj Thing, Nobody, Daedelus, Free the Robots, Thavius Beck, and more.

Listen to Four Tet Remixes from Floating Points and Mosca

UK beatmaker Four Tet (a.k.a. Kieran Hebden) has recently released a couple of 12-inches for “Sing,” the latest single from his impeccable There Is Love in You album. Given that the album’s clubbier direction was partially inspired by time spent at London nightspots like Plastic People, it’s no surprise the Hebden has selected some choice remixers from the city’s vibrant post-dubstep/future-garage/someone-really-needs-to-give-it-a-proper-name-soon music scene.

Both 12-inches are available now, but the Floating Points and Mosca remixes have been posted on Soundcloud for public purusal.

Bubblin’: House of House

Who: House of House
Where: New York, NY

The list of Big Apple DJs and producers striving to recapture the spirit of “classic” house stretches a mile long, but when Liv Spencer (who is also part of DFA project Still Going) and Saheer Umar came together as House of House and dropped the “Rushing to Paradise” single in early 2009, they nailed it. Their stripped-down, soulful piano-house epic quickly became one of those impossible-to-find pieces of vinyl, a problem only recently resolved by the track’s reissue, which also includes a new remix by the legendary DJ Harvey. The follow-up single is in the works, as are who-would-have-thunk-it remixes for Crookers and Robbie Williams.

Tycho “Adrift (Shigeto’s Adrift A Dream Mix)”

Ten years into the music game and Ghostly remains as fresh and important as ever. As a sort of waypoint, the Ann Arbor-based label has put together a double-disc compilation series showcasing the past, present, and future of its ever-expanding catalog. The release, called The Horizon Line/Ghostly By Night, is one disc of remixes and reinterpretations and one of new, previously unreleased tunes, which together feature the likes of Lusine, Solvent, Max Tundra, Matthew Dear, Michna, The Sight Below, and, shown here, Tycho. This moody and subdued remix of the San Francisco producer’s single “Adrift” was crafted by Michigan beatsmith Shigeto, and prominently exhibits a clicking, nod-worthy beat filled with crunchy percussion set amongst loads of melodic atmosphere. The Horizon Line/Ghostly By Night is available now for download, and out on CD May 4.
