Jack Beats Tour North America

Though bassline house is still more of a U.K. phenomenon, London remix favorites Jack Beats are visiting major coastal and Canadian cities this August, bringing their high-energy, sample-driven sounds to locales as disparate as the resort town of Whistler, BC, and the megalopolis of Los Angeles. With remixes for Lady Sovereign, AC Slater, and Does It Offend You, Yeah? under their belts, the duo is releasing their first EP of originals, UFO, just as their tour enters full swing on August 3.

Chrissy Murderbot “Thighs feat. Miles Bonny”

Chrissy Murderbot, a favorite of DJ Donna Summer and the Trouble & Bass Crew, comes at you with a reference-riddled electro-bass number. Beginning with a slowed sample of Armando’s “100% of Disin’ You,” the track continues with some heavy, bass-loaded breakbeat that all the kids are repping.

Nick Curly 8 Bit Reasons Part One

Many of the new sounds coming from Europe are overwhelmingly indebted to the house pioneers of the United States, and while a bit more recognition of such influences might be in order, the phenomenon isn’t necessarily a bad one. However, while many of the tracks on Nick Curly’s first mix CD have a sound that is comforting if a bit well-worn, it is Curly’s mixing that truly ruins any sort of pleasure a listener could derive from the pieces presented. The dynamics are completely flat, the mixes are obvious, and the beat-matching is so rote that it seems like Curly could have prepared the mix in his sleep; in fact, as a fan of many of his productions, this reviewer knows that the Mannheim-based DJ-producer can do better. Thus, while tracks by Nima Gorji, 2020 Soundsystem and Till Von Sein should definitely be checked out, a smarter move would be to buy the singles independently.

Free Liquid Liquid/Rhys Chatham Show

1980s post-punk beat-makers Liquid Liquid return to the stage this summer in New York, finally bringing their oft-sampled disco-punk to a new generation of eager fans. With them, the iconic experimental composer Rhys Chatham is premiering A Crimson Grail for 200 Electric Guitars, a Glenn Branca-esque piece featuring both professional axe wielders and students. Part of the Lincoln Center Out of Doors series, the free concert will take place rain or shine at the Damrosch Park Bandshell on Saturday, August 8. And if you can’t make it to the show, why not try a vegan summertime recipe from Liquid Liquid’s Sal Principato.

Kreng L’Autopsie Phénoménale De Dieu

With a range of influences that spans generations and genres, Kreng’s compositions force the listener’s ears open, even though most have been taken out of their original context as scores for theater pieces by the Belgian experimental group Abattoir Fermé. Numbers like “Tinseltown” recall the clanging of Harry Partch and Godfried-Willem Raes, and continuing in the avant-garde vein, John Cage’s Imaginary Landscapes are evoked throughout the album. With “Meisje In Auto,” Chopin is chopped into pieces, and “Kolossus” sounds like a noisy collaboration between Barry Adamson during his death-obsessed period and Peter Brötzmann when he was punk as fuck. In the end, Kreng’s debut is a fascinating and affecting collection of experimental sound collage that will certainly stand the test of time.

Wavves Tour Set for the Fall

Keeping it on the DL since his meltdown at the Primavera Festival in late May, Nathan Williams of Wavves is hopefully ready to lay off the hard stuff this time when he hits the road this fall for a full U.S. tour. Hitting up some serious urban ports along the way, Williams will have to keep those temptations of his in check if he plans to make it to New York City by week three. Hopefully his tour mates in the Ganglians will keep him in line for the long haul. I mean, isn’t it all about the fans anyway?

Artist to Watch: Anton Zap

Who:Anton Zap
Where: Moscow, Russia

Although he only began releasing records in the past couple years, Anton Zap is no newcomer. During a seven-year residency at Moscow’s famed Propaganda nightclub, Zap honed a serious love for soulful American house, disco, funk, and gospel, but when his party abruptly ended in 2005, he began producing his own tracks. Acclaimed for their combination of deep house and classic Detroit techno, his releases have quickly led to high-profile gigs both inside and outside of his homeland; his foreign debut was at Berlin’s Panorama Bar in January.

SA-RA Creative Partners “Just Like A Baby”

This is some straight-up Sly Stone shit! L.A.’s SA-RA put their own little spin on this sexy, slow jam of rambling bass and wah-wah electricity from the 1971 funk milestone, There’s A Riot Goin’ On. Needless to say, this vamped-up R&B number slides on like a well-worn polyester suit.

CocoRosie Returns to North America

The sisters Casady of France-based experimental folk-pop group CocoRosie will be landing stateside in September for their first North American tour in over two years. The last time the girls made their way across the Atlantic in 2007 to support their Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn album, they were stopped at the Canadian border and were forced to cancel the remainder of their trip, so fingers crossed that they have their visa issues worked out beforehand this time. Also making the voyage will be bassist Josh Werner and beatboxer Spleen. Fans can expect to hear material from CocoRosie’s yet-to-be-named 2010 release.

Joakim “Love & Romance & A Special Person”

It sounds like Joakim has been sticking to a heavy diet of nothing but Laurie Anderson and dirt disco as of late. This sizzler from the French producer’s latest, Milky Ways, has got the shimmer of spinning disco balls and flashing strobesall over it, with some old-school computer voices and tropical guit ar loops thrown in as an added buffer.
