Zion I “DJ DJ”

Amplive stopped remixing indie rock bands long enough to help MC Zumbi put the finishing touches on the next Zion I album, and here’s the first track from that release. The Oakland, CA-based duo is an act that’s been historically billed as hip-hop, but you could more readily shelve many tracks from The TakeOver into your electro catalog. Not that we’re surprised, given 2008’s The Search and Seizure mixtape, whose a-side featured a boat load of genres.

The TakeOver will be released on February 17. Bump this track in the meantime.

Gigolo Records Announces New Comp

Supposedly, Gigolo Records boss DJ Hell took over a year to select the tracks on the label’s forthcoming Eleven compilation.

Titled so because it’s the 11th in Gigolo’s ongoing series of unmixed comps, the double-disc is, according to the Gigolo website, “a celebration of the label’s avant-garde and legendary roster,” compiled for “fans and fanatics of the Mega-church of Gigolo.” and features tracks from Lopazz, Peter Kruder, Acid Junkies, and Hell himself. There’s even an instrumental version of Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” by Herman Schwartz. (via Resident Advisor)

Monosurround “Mushroomed (Shir Khan Dub)”

The über-busy DJ, producer, and megamixer we know as Shir Khan slowed down long enough to hand over this remix of the track “Mushroomed.” The original cut appears on fellow Berliner Monosurround‘s forthcoming album Hello World. Khan’s reworked it into a rather upbeat number that’s absolutely screaming to be played to a crowd of dancing people.

Artist Tips: Anthony Rother

To blame the entire nu-electro revival on Anthony Rother might be a bit unfair. But suffice it to say, the Offenbach, Germany-based producer was a central linchpin in bringing icy bass and synths back to life in the late ’90s. Rother has since drifted all over the place musically–from experimental works on FAX to the EBM and harder techno that he both makes and distributes via his Datapunk label, which just released its third We Are Punks compilation–but the driving, connective force of his sound has always been the drum machine. Here we tap him for his five favorite synthesized drum sources.

Elektron Machinedrum
The Elektron Machinedrum is one of my favorite drum synthesizers. I used it on “Don’t Worry” and have been using it on newer productions as well. For me, the key features are its sound, the modulation of sounds, and the potential for using external samples.

JoMoX XBase 888
I used this one on the upcoming new Telekraft/Anthony Rother single “Hot Chocolate In the Milkyway.” It’s the newest drum computer in my studio and it really surprised me when I started to work with it. It’s second to only the Roland TR-808 in terms of delivering the fattest analog kick on this planet–the whole sound is very warm and fat. It’s so powerful that it doesn’t need any extra EQs or compressors.

Roland TR-808
It’s hard to say anything new about this Roland masterpiece. The TR-808 is the queen of drum synthesizers and its sound is still state-of-the-art. All of the sounds are timeless and I use them all often in my productions. In fact, all of the drum programming on Sex With the Machines was done with the 808.

Roland TR-909
If the 808 is the queen, then the 909 is the king of techno drum computers–and it’s also an often-heard element in my songs, but particularly on “Bad to the Bone,” as the toms are a key 909 feature. My 909 has a technical defect, so it plays the bass drum slightly lower than normal. I hope it never has to go to in for technical service as I want it to have this defect forever.

Novation DrumStation
The Novation DrumStation is definitely the best 808/909 hardware clone on the market. I used it on “When the Sun Goes Down,” and I still use it a lot. I really love the sound architecture and its pitch-shifting and distortion possibilities. Also, the full MIDI control is a great feature. One of its best features, though, is its ability to change the start point of the sounds.

Telepathe “Lights Go Down”

Brooklyn-based noise pop duo Telepathe is set to release its first full-length, Dance Mother, this spring. This quirky debut album will be produced by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio. “Lights Go Down,” off the album, is a playground of buzzing, whirring, tingling, slapping, and other disconnected sounds that dot the landscape around a straightforward beat and simple, calmly delivered melody sung in unwavering unison by band members Busy Gangnes and Melissa Livaudais. The song feels like the ritual chanting of a group approaching an alter to sacrifice a keyboard or a Korg. Lulu McAllister

DJ Signify Of Cities

DJ Signify’s aesthetics could be seen as stubborn or out of step, but you can’t really fault the guy for knowing exactly what he likes. Murky breakbeats, dusty ambience, surreal MC soliloquies—this is tried-and-true good shit, Automator and Muggs be damned! Standouts like “Vanessa” trade Signify’s old SP-1200 graininess for seething noise, coming off like a shoegaze track rather than an Octagonecologyst hopeful. And the melancholic bliss of the weeping bassline on “Costume Kid” is not to be fucked with, even if the ingredients might not be as futuristic as, say, something jacked from Daft Punk.

The Long Lost “Woebegone (Flying Lotus Luckiest Charm Remix)”

The Darlington’s (a.k.a. Daedelus and his wife, Laura), seem to have a fine time together, rifling through flea markets for Victorian frock coats and making dreamy acoustic music as The Long Lost. The latter activity isn’t just them sitting around the living room, casually strumming guitars though. The pair has prepped a self-titled debut album that’s ready for release on March 3 via Daedelus’ longtime home, Ninja Tune.

Now, we couldn’t call the forthcoming album properly promoted without one of Daedelus’ fellow L.A. beatmaking friends stopping by, and Flying Lotus took care of that with this remix of the track “Woebegone.” Hazy hip-hop and emotive folk music go surprisingly well together, it turns out.

Deep Red to Perform at The Zipper

Deep Red, the collaborative project between Hercules & Love Affair keyboardist Morgan Wiley, bassist Andrew Raposo, and the voluptuous vocalist Nomi Ruiz, will perform this Friday, January 16 at The Zipper Factory.

The project, which formed while on a Hercules & Love Affair tour earlier this year, combines minimal electro, dance, and R&B with additional influence from Automato, the hip-hop band in which Wiley and Raposo also appeared.

The evening at The Zipper will feature two sets of dance music from DJ Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem and an opening set from disco band Midnight Magic, led by vocalist Tiffany Roth. Both Midnight Magic and Deep Red have been working on their debut albums, to be released later this year on Midnight Sun Records.

Kid Sister Album Delayed Again

There’s been some back and forth in recent months regarding the release of Kid Sister‘s album Dream Date. We heard January, then March. Now, it seems there’s no date at all. The Chicago-based rapper reportedly took the album back to “complete it as she sees fit and will set a release date with Downtown as soon as she feels it’s done.”

She recently chatted with Billboard on the album’s delay. There should be plenty of time now to read this and other stories currently floating around the web on this.
