Podcast 53: Tobacco: Songs to Get Killed in the Woods To

Leave it to Tobacco to curate a mix of tracks for the XLR8R Podcast and name the collection Songs to Get Killed in the Woods To. We told the Black Moth Super Rainbow head honcho and lover of mini-golf, whose Fucked Up Friends album will release on anticon. next month, to choose whatever tracks he wanted for this exclusive, hour-long podcast. Thus, the mix features everyone from Boards of Canada to Beck, with the odd prank call thrown in for humor’s sake. Just think twice about entering any wooded areas while this one’s playing on the iPod.

Wrestlsers

James Murphy makes an appearance on this, the third video for a track off Hot Chip‘s Ready for the Floor album. An apparent jujitsu master, Murphy shows off his skills by pounding the shit out of a punching bag whilst the members of the band lift weights, wear garbage bags, and sing on rooftops. We have to say, Murphy does actually pierce the camera with a slightly intimidating stare in this one, and if you didn’t know him as the erstwhile member of disco-punk outfit LCD Soundsystem, you might actually be a bit scared.

WHY? Readies Yet Another Massive Tour

Releasing Alopecia in March and traversing the world almost non-stop (and getting the mumps at one point on the tour) isn’t enough to satisfy the three members of WHY? and convince them it’s time to go home and sit in the armchair a few minutes. The Oakland-based outfit is kicking off yet another lengthy slew of dates tonight in Los Angeles. They’ll be joined along the way by a number of pals, including anticon. labelmates Tobacco and Alias, Asthmatic Kitty’s Rafter, and others.

Heaps Decent Preps New Track for Charity

Next up from Heaps Decent, Diplo’s charity program designed to give underprivileged youth in Australia the chance to learn about DJing, production, and releasing music, is an electronic-heavy number from Koori Girls, otherwise known as 16 and 17-year old Heather and Janey King. The young ladies were joined by Chris Devlin, of Spank Rock fame, who produced the track, simply titled “Koori Girls,” and Pase Rock, who stopped in to add some vocals to the wobbly basslines, stabbing synths, and revert-drenched voiceovers here.

The word “Koori” is a term for the word “indigenous,” with some spiritual undertones. All proceeds from the track, which is available now via iTunes, will go towards the Heaps Decent mission.

The Dead Science “Young Eucharists”

The remixes keep coming from Portland-based outfit Parenthetical Girls. With their Tomlab debut, Entanglements, about to hit the shelves, the band commissioned labelmates No Kids and Seattle’s The Dead Science to play a couple covers of the band, both of which are currently playing on XLR8R.com. While No Kids turned “This Regrettable End” into a dancey number with a 4/4 beat, The Dead Science’s version of “Young Eucharists” is a more experimental rock affair, with reverb-drenched vocals and guitar chords that crescendo throughout the song. Fans of XIu Xiu, take note. Photo by Robert Newel.

No Kids “This Regrettable End”

Parenthetical Girls must be really excited about the release of their upcoming Tomlab debut, Engtanglements. The Portland-based three-man, one-woman outfit already leaked A Song for Ellie Greenwich earlier this summer. Now, the band has commissioned labelmates No Kids and Seattle’s The Dead Science to do a couple covers of the band, both of which are currently playing on XLR8R.com. “This Regrettable End” finds No Kids adding a catchy drum machine beat under the original cut’s dense orchestration, and vocalist Zac Pennington’s smooth, melancholy voice seems well-suited to this new arrangement. If you’re feeling this, also check the cover of “Young Eucharists” from The Dead Science. Photo by Sarah Cass.

Parenthetical Girls Announce Remixes, Tour

Their first album for Tomlab is set to drop next week, but the Parenthetical Girls have hardly been sitting at home, twiddling their thumbs in the weeks that have led up to the release. Instead the three-man, one-woman outfit from Portland snagged labelmates No Kids, as well as Seattle’s The Dead Science, and commissioned the bands to perform remix duties for “This Regrettable End” and “Young Eucharists,” respectively.

Additionally, the band has a few tour dates planned for the month of September, beginning next week, just before the September 9 release of Engtanglements. Check them in one of these cities:

09/07 Portland, OR: The Leftbank
09/16 Brooklyn, NY: Music Hall of Williamsburg
09/18 Philadelphia, PA: First Unitarian Church
09/19 Washington, DC: Black Cat
09/20 Columbus, OH: Skully’s Muisc Diner

Mungo’s Hi Fi “Around the Redub feat. Suncycle”

Nothing but high energy and enticing dub rhythms on this track, a vinyl-only dub of the original “Around the World” cut off Scotland-based soundsystem Mungos Hi Fi‘s Soundsystem Champions release. The crew has existed since 2001 and been loved and played by the likes of Mr Scruff, and the late John Peel, as well as dropping releases on Solid Steel and Ninja Tune. The group is equally well-known for dropping vinyl-only releases via its own Scotch Bonnet imprint, which is exactly where you can pick up “Around the Redub” once you’ve hit download here and given the track a whirl.

Top 10: Of Montreal, Madlib, Deastro

Of Montreal
Skeletal Lamping
Polyvinyl
Release Date: October 7

Both playful and poignant, the ninth studio album from Kevin Barnes and Co. finds the band on-point as ever, turning pop music on its head and experimenting with rhythms and keyboards, synths and saxophones, and endless energy. In short, it’s catchy without resorting to musical clichés, but then, you’d expect nothing less from a band that rose out of this place. JM

This debut album from Detroit-based musician Randolph Chabot will have your inner nerd dancing in no time. While there are a few low-key tracks, most cuts are filled with dance-worthy rhythms that foster a desire for ’80s videogame-influenced dance tunes. Standout tracks include “Light Power” and “Michael, The Lone Archer of the North Shore.” JF

Madlib
WLIB: AM: King of the Wigflip

Madlib’s all over the place. Let’s just accept that fact and move on. This release, the last one of BBE’s Beat Generation series, showcases his many sides, tastes, and tendencies, with a mix of beats from the likes of J-Rocc, Prince Po, Frank N Dank, Stacy Epps, and Guilty Simpson, with samples and vocal snippits interlaced throughout. But what, exactly, is a wigflip? MN

Speaking of all over the map, this Switzerland-based duo just yanked the phrase “genre-bending” from everyone else and is harboring it greedily in their studio. Part pop and part experimental rock, with everything from African rhythms to found sounds woven through the tracks, this album doesn’t stay in one place for long, darting instead between the various styles with impressive speed and smoothness. JM

A distinctly gentle sound and great attention to lyrics fill the second full-length from this Tallahassee, FL-based three-piece band. It’s the sort of album that makes one relax and tap their toes while still remaining emotionally wrought. JF

I found my copy of this disc while cleaning out the closet for a move, threw it into the computer and it sounds as good as it did when the album was released in 2002. This band’s brand of indie-rock simply does not go out of style, particularly on this album. JM

Eva Be Moving Without Traveling

It can be a challenge to infuse freshness into enduring and beloved forms of music like reggae and dub. Enter Berlin DJ/producer Eva Bernhard, who tries her skillful hand at doing just that with Moving Without Traveling, elevating the forms into the futuristic now and meshing tech sounds and warm irie vibes. “No Memory of Time” is closest to old-school rasta, with its warm, soothing feel beneath Joe Dukie’s beautifully crooned pleas. “Speakeasy” is a good example of the German tech sound sprinkled throughout the album with brooding and dirty sub-bass coiled by RQM’s deft lyrical flow. Space-age dub with hints of organic warmth–always a trip worth taking.
