Spectral’s Third Death is Nothing to Fear 12″ Announced

The third installment of Spectral Sound‘s Death is Nothing to Fear series furthers the label’s mission of highlighting new sounds coming from the farthest reaches of the techno world. The four tracks here present a primer on the various styles currently tearing through the international house and techno scenes. Fans of dark, moody beats should check Side A of the record, while Kate Simko delivers slightly lighter–but no less danceable–fare on Side B. For a complete 180, consult the frantically paced, slightly ravey 2AM/FM track. Bag this on January 29.

Tracklisting
A1. Sami Koivikko “Keskus”
A2. Seth Troxler “Relationship”

B1. Kate Simko “Clean Living”
B2. 2AM/FM “Motherfuckers Don’t Know”

The Whitsundays “Loralee”

The self-titled debut album from Alberta-based band The Whitsundays calls upon the 1960s for inspiration, and comes off equal parts psychedelia, garage, and vintage organ rock. The England-based band has a definite talent for combining musical sensibilities of the past with a present day feel.

The Whitsundays – Loralee

Supersilent 8

The first minute and a half of Supersilent’s 8 is almost just that–super-silent. You’ll find yourself twiddling the volume knob–particularly if you’ve just come from the Norwegian crew’s blissed-out, Eno-esque 6 (7 was a DVD)–until the ten-minute mark hits and the low synth flutters have, almost imperceptibly, morphed into doom-metal sludge. Everything becomes much too loud, and then, on “2,” the sludge thins to a trickle: seven minutes of faint electronic warbles. As 8’s numbers climb–tracks here are labeled as simple ascending numerals–the pattern repeats, alternating between the spare and hushed and the cacophonous, with the sounds–from electronic chirps to operatic vocals to guitar thrash–becoming odder at every step. Lovely, ecstatic, and confounding.

Smif-N-Wessun The Album

For the creation of their fourth album, MCs Tek and Steele temporarily left Brooklyn behind and traveled up to Sweden. And the resulting product is the duo’s most surprising release since their ’95 debut–surprising mostly because these gun-clapping rappers have never gotten as personal as they do on tracks like the somber, youthful remembrance “Trouble.” But The Album at times awkwardly stands apart from previous efforts because of the mixed bag of beats (courtesy of Northern Europe’s Ken Ring, Tommy Tee, and others), which range from catchy and disco-esque to downright dreary. More than ever, Tek and Steele have something significant to say, but the inconsistent production doesn’t help craft their message.

Matthew Styles “Sources”

This is a record by a Berlin resident, Matthew Styles. He is first and foremost co-manager of the London label Crosstown Rebels and also has a reputation as a brilliant DJ. With this record on Dinky’s label, he fits right into the Horizontal stable. If you are still standing at the end of a long night clubbing, then you’ll be crazy for this music: Dark, deep, and delicate.

Podcast 25: Mixhell

Iggor Cavalera is recognized throughout the world as a master drummer and former member of none other than Brazilian heavy-metal band Sepultura. However, he is as much familiar with turntables and MPCs and he is with a drum kit, taking his credo of Hard Beat Beat and applying it to other projects. As Mixhell, he and his wife, Laima Leyton, combine dancefloor and hard rock sensibilities for DJ sets as unpredictable as Cavalera’s musical career. Only scan the enormous tracklisting below for proof.

Carl Craig Releases Double-Disc Session

What magical powers keep a producer going strong for nearly two decades? Check Carl Craig‘s forthcoming, double-disc release on !K7 to find out. The Planet-E founder and Detroit techno legend is set to drop Carl Craig Sessions in March of this year, and the sheer volume of work on this sampler will prove why he has managed to stick around so long in the music game.

“I’ve always dealt with my music in an improvisational way and I think the way that I mix in the club is how I mix in the studio,” Craig explained in a November 2005 interview with XLR8R. “I’m able to put enough of myself into it to where it feels more human than just being a cold set of just track after track after track.”

The two discs will feature classic Carl Craig tunes and remixes, from the famous club banger “Throw” to his recent, Grammy nominated reworking of the Junior Boys’ “Like a Child,” as well as some unreleased edits, and one brand new track. Let’s hope he stays this prolific for another two decades.

Blitzen Trapper Announces Headlining Tour

Headlining a tour might be new to the experimental folkies in Blitzen Trapper, but at least the six-piece band from Portland knows how to do it right. Rather than play a few forgettable dates here and there over the last year, the band has saved all its energy for a massive North American tour that kicks off in late February and will continue through the spring. Joining them on the road will be Fleet Foxes, a new band from Seattle, as well as Grand Archives, Beach House, Papercuts, and Mahjongg.

No date has been announced for the band’s fourth full-length, set for release on Sub Pop. In the meantime, you can head to one of these shows, where a six-song, tour-only EP will be exclusively available for sale.

Boogie Preps Limited-Edition Book, Paris Exhibitions

Simply known as Boogie to his fans, the Serbian-born photographer first garnered notice with stirring photographs of his war-torn homeland. One green card and a move to Brooklyn later, he now documents life on the fringe, from gangsters to junkies to some of New York’s most notorious neighborhoods.

Now, powerHouse Books–who released Boogie’s first monograph, It’s All Good–has gathered some of the self-taught photographer’s most striking and personal images for a new book, simply entitled Boogie. Limited to 500 copies, each signed and packaged with a numbered slipcase and accompanying print, this second monograph is a collection of images from Boogie’s travels around the world with camera in hand.

“Clean design and classic presentation allow for unfettered meditation of the world as Boogie sees it,” says powerHouse Books’ publicist Sara Rosen. “[It is] a stark, harsh reality humming with the poetry of empty lives, tired lives, chaos, and violence. There is nothing sentimental in his vision, yet it is an incredibly romantic portrait of ruin.”

If the book weren’t enough, two exhibitions in Paris have been scheduled to celebrate Boogie’s release. Style mecca Colette launched theirs yesterday, and will be displaying photographs through January 26. Then, the Galerie Olivier Robert will exhibit Boogie’s work from March 12 – April 12. Both exhibitions will feature photographs from Boogie.
