CutOff!CutOff! ‘Recursion’

CutOff!CutOff!‘s new EP, Décollage, is set to land on February 22.

Décollage will be the inaugural release on CutOff!CutOff!’s RSNTR Rec. imprint, which will serve as a platform for darker shades of techno and electronic music. Keeping in tune with these ideals, the new EP features three trippy tracks that run the gamut from glitchy modular synth work to relentless brutalist techno and sinister ambient.

In support of the EP, CutOff!CutOff! has offered up the EP’s mind-bending closing cut “Recursion” as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.

Rising London-Based Collective Franc Moody Share Animated Video for ‘Pheromones’

Rising London-based collective Franc Moody have shared a new animated video for “Pheromones,” directed by fashion photographer Crack Stevens and ex Boiler Room art director Mason London.

Franc Moody is a collective of like-minded musicians led by Ned Franc and Jon Moody who last year unleashed “Dopamine” and “Super Star Struck,” bringing them to the attention of underground party and festival goers. The guys explained of the tracks: “We set out to combine the epic intergalactic funk sounds á la George Clinton with stellar bass n’ drum grooves of Sly Stone with some of our disco and electronic idols thrown in.” The collective’s DIY approach and background running infamous warehouse parties in Tottenham inspired them to combine that raw, raucous party feel, with the slick and groove-based musicianship of their heroes.

“Pheromones” is about “attraction and reaction” and unmasks a disco-funk lineage conversing head-on with more recent like-minded musical contemporaries.

They detail the video: “We were so into what Crack and Mason had done for “Super Star Struck” we were determined for them to work on “Pheromones.” We love the themes they have explored on both videos, it feels really inclusive and original, plus the pace and colours and the edit itself really enhanced the groove on the track. On this one, the idea of our heroine finding Atlantis, this mythical city, in a slump and magically bringing the good vibes and smiles to its citizens is what Franc Moody is all about. We pretty much left Akin and Joe to the work after seeing the initial idea. It’s a rare thing to feel totally at ease with someone working on your project and also to be blown away every time you get sent an edit! The cohesion between their styles and our music creates something special that it’s been an honour to explore again—and surely there will be more :)”

Pheromones is available now digitally.

Hear an Experimental Synth Exploration From ’80s Pioneers The Nightcrawlers

Anthology Recordings is set to issue a collection of recordings from Philadelphia / New Jersey experimental synth group The Nightcrawlers—a trio comprised of brothers Tom and Peter Gulch and Dave Lunt.

Titled The Biophonic Boombox Recordings, the release will be the group’s first ever retrospective and features cuts pulled from over 40 cassette tapes that the trio released from 1979 to the early ’90s under their Synkronos Music label imprint. These early electronic explorations drew influence from the cosmic minimalism of the Berlin School (Klaus Schulze / Tangerine Dream) and other European pioneers (Cluster / Popul Vuh) and were recorded straight into the mic of a JVC Biphonic Boombox as fully improvised performances.

In support of the release, Anthology has offered up a full stream of “Geistesblitz,” available to hear via the player below.

Gwenno Announces New Album, Le Kov

Gwenno Saunders (a.k.a Gwenno) has shared plans for her new album, titled Le Kov (The Place of Memory)

Le Kov (The Place of Memory) is the Welsh singer-songwriter’s second album, created alongside long-term collaborator and producer, Rhys Edwards, with additional drum engineering by Gorwel Owen (Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, Super Furry Animals)—and mixing and additional programming by David Wrench.

Written entirely in Cornish, Le Kov is an exploration of the individual and collective subconscious, the myths and drolls of Cornwall, and the survival of Britain’s lesser-known Brythonic language. As one of the language’s few fluent speakers, Gwenno felt a duty to make her second album entirely in Cornish: to create a document of a living language, explore her identity and the endless creative possibilities of a tongue that has a very small surviving artistic output, despite having been around for at least 15 centuries. She dove deep into research, learning about attempts to protect and progress the language and the role of women throughout Cornish history.

Y Dydd Olaf (The Final Day), Gwenno’s debut was a concept album based on Welsh writer Owain Owain’s 1976 sci-fi novel of the same name in which robots take over the human race—bar a single Welsh speaker, the protagonist, who hasn’t relinquished his identity. Originally released on Welsh label Peski and reissued by Heavenly Recordings in 2015, it won that year’s Welsh Music Prize and Best Welsh Album at the National Eisteddfod, along with much widespread acclaim.

Ahead of the new release, Gwenno has shared a video for “Tir Ha Mor,” the first single to be released from the LP.

Deep’a & Biri Explore the Relationship Between Man and Machine on Sophomore Album

Israeli duo Deep’a & Biri have a new album on the way.

Central to the Israeli club scene, Deep’a & Biri have long been defying expectations even within a community they helped construct. Serving as resident DJs, activists and bookers for Tel Aviv’s Barzilay Club, the pair helped build a transcendent club scene. Hugely influential artists such as Robert Hood, Derrick May, Rødhad, Ben Klock, and Moritz Von Oswald have all passed through the club. As the duo held down dozens of parties with dozens of DJs, there was no “eureka” moment for their emerging sound; just a steady stream of inspiring electronic music, much of which left an indelible imprint on the pair.

Now based in Berlin, for Deep’a & Biri, things are much the same even if the landscape and the city are different. Always rooted in the fertile ground between machines and emotion, on their second full-length LP, Dominance—a follow up to 2013’s Emotions, Visions, Changes—the duo “demonstrate a unique grasp of the sensitive, unfolding relationship between man and machine.” We’re told that Dominance “flawlessly segues between forcefulness and weightlessness.”

The album’s distinctive artwork comes from the studio of Jewish orthodox artist Avraham Guy Barchil, who forged a powerful connection with Deep’a, and was immediately drawn to the “weird atmosphere, amazing technique and emotions involved with his work.” Perhaps one of the most interesting painters from Israel, Avraham is known for his unique perspective, taking his inspiration from the Zohar—the foundational work in the literature of Jewish mystical thought known as Kabbalah. The ambiguous figures represent mystical aspects of the Torah (the five books of Moses), as well as material on mysticism and mythical cosmogony.

Sonnymoon Drop New Single, ‘Ideas’

Sonnymoon have today released a new single, “Ideas,” via their Sonnymoon Music imprint—a follow up to last year’s “Role.”

Sonnymoon’s vision expands on the roles pop and experimental music share together and “Ideas” gives birth out of this trajectory. As Jon Hoard explains, “A great deal of the vision for “Ideas” was gained from an existing drum loop by one member of Sonnymoon, Dane. We all resonated with the loop and began exploring harmonies and melodies. Subsequently, lyrics reminiscent of mantras began to flow such as the lines “start right here” and “it’s already don””. From there, the song fully took form and by the time we recorded the song, all we could do was decide to tell listeners to “run run run,” “done done done.” Just go with it; that’s “Ideas” in essence.”

Sonnymoon’s dynamic journey commenced in 2009 when Anna Wise and Dane Orr began making music together after a chance first encounter. As a duo, they’ve recorded and released three albums (Golden Age, Sonnymoon, The Courage of Present Times) and one EP (2012). Since 2014, the duo have been joined live by Jonathan Hoard. Last year, they recorded enough material for their next full-length. “Role” and “Ideas” are the first glimpse of this new body of work.

This latest music from the group was captured in Upstate New York.

Stimming and Lambert’s New Video Plays Like a Hallucinogenic Storybook

Stimming and Lambert have teamed up for a new album on Gomma sub-label Kryptox, set to drop on March 9.

The album, titled Exodus, will inaugurate Kryptox, a new label run by Mathias Munk Modica that will focus on neo-jazz, kraut, and classical music. The production of Exodus mostly took place in Osaka last year, as Stimming explains:

“I did most of the production last year while touring Asia. Shacked up in an eight square-meter hotel room in Osaka, and with my trusty Elektron devices in hand, I combined grooves reminiscent of my Liquorice album with Lambert’s stunning harmonies. It’s quite funny actually, before we started this project together, I was wondering what it would be like to be able to play piano on a higher level. I found myself daydreaming at times, thinking, I would love to make the kind of music that Lambert is making.”

Alongside the announcement, the duo have shared a stunning, hallucinogenic video for “Edelweiss,” which melds dream-like animations with the duo’s achingly beautiful music.

You can pre-order the LP here.
