Aera Preps Album for Permanent Vacation

Ralf Schmidt (a.k.a Aera) will release his second LP via Munich’s Permanent Vacation, titled The Sound Path.

Born in the high north of Germany and now a Berlin resident, Aera first appeared on the electronic music map when he established his own Aleph Music label back in 2010 before releasing his debut album Offseason Traveller in 2013. He’s since gone on to release on Innervisions, Maeve, and John Talabot‘s Hivern Discs.

The Sound Path is said to see Aera “continue his musical travels” and is described as his “most coherent” and “most personal” work to date, featuring nuances from new age, kraut, and ambient.

Nils Frahm All Melody

Score: 8/10

Berlin’s Nils Frahm is best known for bridging the gap between the worlds of electronic and classical music. Famed composers such as Philip Glass, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Steve Reich may have hit upon this fusion first, but Frahm’s records go somewhere new, with their post-dance music touches of headphone techno, ambient, and minimalism.

Balancing avant-garde elements with haunting melodies, the German musician has helped clear a path for other like-minded artists working at the interface between these genres, from Hauschka to Jóhann Jóhannsson. As a result, Frahm and Robert Raths, boss of the influential label Erased Tapes, are at the forefront of a new classical movement. Their brand of melancholia and electronic experimentation is popular. Yet refusing to be typecast, on his latest solo album All Melody, Frahm has broadened his range, further exploring his love of electronics while folding in influences from jazz and choral music.

Made in the new Saal 3 studio in Berlin that Frahm has been constructing by increments for the last two years, All Melody is spacious, echoic, and possessed with a wintry majesty. It shimmers like the icy River Spree under a pale sun.

An instant standout is the heartbreaking “My Friend The Forest”: a simple, delicate piano piece reminiscent of “Ode” from 2015’s Solo album. You can hear the rustlings of the room, the hammers of the piano moving, Frahm’s feet pressing the pedals. But other songs are not so straightforward. “Sunson,” after its sweeping orchestral beginning, melts into a slow house beat, with bumping synth bass and sinuous pipe organ, doused in delay.

“A Place” is an ambient piece of melancholy chords, with little melodies buried deep in the hiss and dust of the song’s sound bed. Here, massed female choir voices add a natural touch, yet the feeling is still frosty: you’ll want to pull your coat closer as a chill creeps through your bones. “Human Range” adds subtle smears of smoky trumpet for an artful hint of jazz similar to Call Super’s recent album Arpo, yet, again, the voices return, taking the song somewhere novel.

The title track is perhaps Frahm’s most techno moment yet, a deep dive into spectral machine textures with electric piano on top that veers from repetitive minimalist rhythm to complex playing, before disappearing entirely as the track intensifies its hypnotic and introspective spell. “Kaleidoscope,” with its rapidly oscillating pipe organ textures, is like its title: wheels of colour fold into each other, forming new patterns and sensations. It’s a close cousin to the classic “Says” from his 2013 breakthrough record Spaces, though its feeling is less brooding and more psychedelic. The way the choral voices merge with the strings and organ is something special indeed.

All Melody is a beautiful record, though a sad one. The ambient melodies of “#2” demonstrate not just Frahm’s masterful sense of restraint, but also the capacity of electronic music to vividly explore downbeat feelings. That bittersweet feeling pervades the record, but lovers of introspective sounds will adore it.

With All Melody, Nils Frahm has retained his unique approach and emotional sensitivity. He’s also expanded his sound, and shown more of his soul than ever before. It’s a record to be treasured.

Premiere: Hear an Acid-Drenched Cut From Lou Karsh’s New EP

Melbourne artist Lou Karsh—a new project from Reptant—is up next for London label X-Kalay.

The EP, titled Ataraxia, follows releases from Kask, Diego Tierres, and Coastdream with four acid-drenched tracks of varying intensity. From the title track’s stripped-back breakbeats to the melancholic atmospheres of “Infrared” and the closing cut’s rolling acid lines, Ataraxia‘s collection of dancefloor cuts are sure to find their way onto the turntables of DJs the world over, while whipping dancers into a frenzy in the process.

Ahead of the release on February 2, you can pr-order Ataraxiahere, with “Infrared” streaming in full via the player below.

Watch a Gritty Video From Reindeer

James Reindeer is set to release his full-length debut on March 30 via Berlin-based experimental outpost Anette Records.

Field Reports From The Western Lands is a conceptual sequel to the fbcabric & reindeer LP It’s Not Who You Know, It’s Whom You Know, presenting a 16-track collection that utilizes various field recordings collected around Europe and North America, as well as dialogue samples of President Truman and Robert Oppenheimer, to take you on a sonic journey “through the fallen Western World of murky dreams and alluring weightlessness.”

The first single from the LP, “Description of a Struggle,” borrows its title from the first published story by Franz Kafka, and is a perfect introduction to the cold, murky atmospheres present across the album. The track, like the album itself, touches on elements of post-rock, downtempo, and gritty trip-hop, with its accompanying film following suit with images shot in abandoned structures throughout the Plagwitz district of Leipzig, Germany.

You can watch the video in full via the player above, with the track also streaming via SoundCloud below.

Barking Shares Haunting Cut From New EP

Early next month, Sydney’s Deep Seeded Records will return with the debut release from Barking, a new project from Gareth Psaltis, Deep Seeded co-founder and one half of phile.

The EP, titled Prone, will be the label’s third release, following on from phile’s self-titled outing and ptwiggs‘ Purge EP. The four tracks on the EP draw on Psaltis’ affinity for techno, electro, and ambient, although, none of the cuts fit comfortably into any genre confines. From the unhinged energy of opening cut, “Singularity,” to the understated melancholic beauty of “Pathos,” Prone delivers a stunning collection of dancefloor weapons that beg to be played a good soundsystem—or a nice set of headphones.

Prone will be available on February 5 and can be pre-ordered here, with “Pathos” streaming in full via the player below.

dOP ‘The Dying Night’

dOP are said to be entering a new era. From their roots in the Parisian hip-hop scene, the world of unconventional house and techno beckoned in a whirlwind of releases on labels such as Eklo, Supplement Facts, and Watergate, while their debut album Greatest Hits surfaced on Circus Company in 2010.

Now they welcome a new artist to the group, with Fabien Leseure joining JAW and Damien as they move to a new studio space in Berlin. This fresh era for the group will also see them launching their own label, dOP Only, exclusively focused on their own music, with a minimum of a new track being released every month. Meanwhile, a new release for their spiritual home Circus Company is arriving in early 2018.

In support of the label, the duo have offered up “The Dying Night,” the label’s first release, for download. Grab it now via the WeTransfer button below.

Nils Frahm Shares Full Album Stream

Nils Frahm has shared a full stream of All Melody, his seventh LP, scheduled for release via Erased Tapes later this week.

All Melody was recorded in Frahm’s new Berlin studio, situated in Saal 3, part of the historical 1950s East German Funkhaus building beside the River Spree. It is here where he has spent most of his time deconstructing and reconstructing the entire space, from the cabling and electricity to the woodwork, before moving on to the finer elements: building a pipe organ and creating a mixing desk all from scratch with the help of his friends.

His previous albums have often been accompanied by a story, such as Felt (2011), where he placed felt upon the hammers of the piano out of courtesy to his neighbors when recording late at night in his old bedroom studio; and the following album Screws (2012), when injuring his thumb forced him to play with only nine fingers. His new album is born out of the freedom that his new environment provided, allowing Frahm to explore without any restrictions and to “keep it all about the melody.”

Throwing Snow Launches Four-Part EP Series via Houndstooth

Throwing Snow, real name Ross Tones, has returned to Houndstooth with Trébucher, a two-track release that landed last week.

Tones, a London-based artist, has previously released two albums on the fabric-affiliated label, in addition to numerous EPs. He’s now set to release four more EPs, the first of which is Trébucher, all designed to “showcase a collection of dancefloor releases” that will culminate in a special extended vinyl release this summer.

The EP opens with “Trébucher,” featuring a stark repeated arpeggio line which guides you into the warped soundscape. As it twists and changes it draws you in further, working through various levels that stumble and fall over themselves (“Trebucher” is French for stumble). “Tantrum” is an industrial track—intimate, moody, and constructed with a cleanness and precision that’s become synonymous with the producer’s work.

VvvvV ‘Linguistics’ (Hashback Hashish Remix)

Purveyors of the experimental electronica scene in New Delhi, Circuit Records have presented the latest VvvvV remix courtesy of the dark techno specialist Hashback Hashish.

With over 10 years musical experience under his belt as both a producer and performer, Hashback Hashish (a.k.a Ashish Sachan) has released a plethora of critically acclaimed albums, EPs, and remixes while touring extensively across South East Asia and the UK.

Taking VvvvV’s ambient, ’80s-inspired,synth-driven single “Linguistics,” Hashback Hashish completely flips the track to produce an absorbing and menacing remix. A pumping bassline and kick drum stand strong in unison, unwavering through the nine-minute piece, developing steadily with rhythmic nuances backed by sophisticated synth melodies.

Discussing the remix, Sachan explains, “Diligent sequencing that leaves you deeply satisfied is VvvvV’s hallmark and “Linguistics” treads those same footsteps but with renewed energy. It was a thrill to remix this, and it is an immersive extension of that same thrill I have hoped to recreate for the listener. The elements for this remix are MFB Tanzbar, Roland TB03, Roland Space Echo, Arturia Minibrute, and hypnotic dub chords parts from the original.”

Circuit Records was founded in 2015 and is “on a mission to introduce the burgeoning, electronic music scene in New Delhi to the masses. From the glitchy rhythms of Toymob to the dark techno atmospherics of Perc, the label shines a light on the rich and diverse nature of Indian music.
