Brainwaltzera Preps Debut Album for FILM

Brainwaltzera’s debut LP, Poly-ana, will drop next month via FILM.

The album follows April’s Aescoba EP, which was also released via FILM, with thirteen tracks of both previously released material and new outings. Poly-ana is a perfect introduction for those unfamiliar with Brainwaltzera’s sound, taking the listener through warped downtempo grooves, experimental IDM, and more gritty numbers that bring to mind the work of Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Squarepusher, and Luke Vibert.

Poly-ana will be out on September 29.

Love Deluxe ‘Spice of Life’

The latest release to drop on Soothsayer is Silk Mirage, the new EP from Sydney producer Love Deluxe.

The full EP release follows his smooth-as-silk debut single, “Cool Breeze Over The Mountains”—which dropped alongside a stylish video rendition by Lost-Art—with a collection of groove-led house cuts. In support of the EP, which dropped on Friday on Soothsayer, Love Deluxe has offered up “Spice of Life” as today’s XLR8R download. Like “Cool Breeze Over The Mountains,” “Spice of Life” is a timeless track that transcends genre trends and eras. With its swinging percussion and loose, soulful samples, it would feel home on a myriad of dancefloors the world over.

You can grab “Spice of Life” below, with the full EP here.

Splice Give Tips on Mixing 808 Sounds in Your Productions

Over the weekend, Splice continued their 8 Days of 808 content with tips on mixing 808 sounds and a wrap up of the 808 beat breakdowns.

Splice launched 8 Days of 808 last Tuesday, dropping content each day since that has included history of the 808, an interview with producer and mixing engineer Bob Powers, mixing tips for 808 sounds, and insightful beat breakdowns of popular tracks built on the 808 (Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing,” Afrika Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock,” and Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown”).

For the mixing tips, Splice enlisted Reuben Raman, their in-house audio specialist and the founder of Singapore-based studio SoundFarm, to offer his knowledge on navigating the mixing challenges across the 808’s frequency extremes, from the notoriously booming bass drum to the harshness of the hi-hats.

You can check out the first tip below, with the full tips feature available here.

1. Tackle The Low End With a Gate

We all know how subby 808 bass drums can be. That sound is iconic and helped define early hip hop and solidify the 808’s place in music history. But that sound is also pesky for mixing engineers. Sub frequencies take up a lot of—often, an unnecessary amount of—headroom in a mix. One way around this? Use a gate to control the sustain of the bass drum. With a gate controlling the low end, you free up extra headroom and can push the 808 bass drum louder in the mix. But don’t set the attack and the release of the gate to be too fast, or you’ll risk getting unpleasant ‘gate-clicking’ noises.

Premiere: Stream a Deep New Cut From Doc Martin

Under No Illusion will drop their latest release, Freddy Be & Savi Leon‘s Benevolence, on August 21.

The EP will be the label’s 91st release, following on from recent appearances from Yousef, De La Swing, and Leftwing & Kody, among others. Benevolence features the sun-soaked title cut by Freddy Be & Savi Leon, alongside a cast of remixes that include outings from Joeski, Ki Creighton, and Doc Martin.

In support of the release, the label have offered up a full stream of Doc Martin’s remix. For his interpretation, Doc takes the balearic-tinged house of the original into deeper terrain, melding cascading synth lines with chunky percussion and a fierce low-end. On the remix, Doc said:

“I approach every remix differently. With everyone focusing on prime-time bangers, I wanted to make something that DJ’s could play when building a set, one that could be played in the morning or in a more relaxed atmosphere like a daytime party. This has been going down extremely well in all these situations, and even at peak time.”

You can stream Doc’s remix via the player below, with the EP available for pre-order here.

Theo Kottis ‘Drift’ (IDQ Remix)

Emerging talent Theo Kottis has already chalked up an impressive following via his take on the cinematic sound of electronic techno. His latest EP will land on Carioca with two elegant and emotive cuts that are “to be thoroughly listened to as well as danced to,” the label explains.

Ahead of the EP’s August 21 release, a remix of the title track by IDQ is exclusively available to stream and download below.

The nine-track release features collaborations with Julliard trained classical pianist Julien Quentin, No Regular Play’s Greg Paulus on trumpet, Wareika’s Henrik Raabe on guitar, Yonathan Levi on double bass, Moritz Baumgartner for additional drum work, and Berlin’s Signum Saxophone Quartet.

Helena Hauff, Lory D, Karenn, and More Play DVS1’s Wall Of Sound at ADE

Helena Hauff, Lory D, Karenn (Live), and more will play DVS1‘s Wall Of Sound Event at this year’s Amsterdam Dance Event.

Since its first setup in 2015, DVS1 continues to bring the concept of the Wall Of Sound to European clubs and crowds once a year. With each new event, the US producer and DJ presents a different speaker setup working with varying sound companies providing an unparalleled sonic dance floor experience. The wall of sound is closely linked to DVS1’s past as these massive sound systems of the 90s US-Midwest rave scene molded his vision of techno which is based on the physical power of music:

“To have the opportunity to set this up and give this experience to the people in the crowd is very special for me because it’s how I first experienced this music and what made me see everything so differently. Music became a physical energy instead of just something I listened to. DJs are now front and center and always on stages becoming the star of the show, but when you have the wall of sound idea executed correctly, the star of the show is the sound system.” –– DVS1

This event takes place on October 19, with more information below, including the lineup and speaker setups.
