Podcast 458: Dengue Dengue Dengue

Peruvian duo Dengue Dengue Dengue have become central figures of a rising South American scene that places traditional rhythms at the forefront of a dubby, bass-heavy sound. More so than many of their contemporaries, however, the duo use psychedelia as a major touchstone in not only their sound, but every aspect of the project. Their appearance—both artists wear custom-made technicolor masks that interpret mythological creatures—the music videos, and the rolling beats they produce and play out are all steeped in history; but it’s history put through a modern, hallucinogenic filter.

What started as a side project for Rafael Pereira and Felipe Salmon has now morphed into a fully realized production that has seen the two artists tour their warped vision across the globe, not to the mention their ever-growing discography that already includes two albums and a handful of EPs, singles, videos, and collaborations.

Their latest album, Siete Raíces—released back in June on label home Enchufada—follows this psychedelic trend and earned its name from a traditional Peruvian liquor brewed from several jungle plants with aphrodisiac properties. It’s also their most accomplished and complete piece of work to date, with nine smoke-filled jams that reference their South American heritage, as well as juke, footwork, dub, and dancehall.

Although it has been available digitally since June, Siete Raíces will be available on vinyl for the first time at the Enchufada label showcase at Amsterdam’s ADE—a show the duo are also headlining—followed by a Bandcamp release a week later. In the lead up to the show and the vinyl release, Dengue Dengue Dengue have put together an engrossing hour-long mix full of transcendental grooves.

When and where was this mix recorded?
This was recorded in August while we were in Berlin, where we stay while we are touring.

What equipment did you record the mix on?
This mix was recorded in Ableton live, a rare Sixty-Four Mixer, and NI Machine as a midi controller.

Did you have a specific mood/idea that you wanted to express?
Yes, this is an afro-oriented music selection. It is also very 4/4 unlike other mixtapes we’ve done before. This mix reflects the sound we are adding to our DJ sets lately.

How did you select the specific tracks that you wanted to include?
We want to showcase a different side of our project in each mixtape we do, so for this one we wanted to go more afro oriented. We’ve been experimenting a lot with afro-Peruvian music, you can hear that in our latest album “Siete Raices.”

How did you approach this mix in comparison to a regular DJ set?
Well, we usually mix in a club environment, so the music is dance oriented, in the sense that we are focused on creating a danceable trip. In a mixtape like this one, we focus on creating a mood, something you can listen at home while relaxing or in the car.

Dengue Dengue Dengue is very visually-focused in its presentation. Do you have plans to take this further in regards to live shows and releases?
Yes, definitely, we usually change the masks and the visuals every time we release a new record. But we are also in the process of incorporating new techniques for the live show plus some live instrumentation. But this is for next summer…

What else do you have coming up this year?
We are doing the second part of the Siete Raices tour in Europe, including the Enchufada Ticket to the Tropics Showcase at ADE in Amsterdam, this gig is gonna be awesome. After this tour which ends in December, we will play at Sonar festival in Colombia and Argentina. Oh yes, and we are also running a new party in Lima named Afronoise, We will do the next one in December with a very special guest.

Dengue Dengue Dengue will also be performing at January’s Comunite 2017 party in Mexico.

XLR8R Podcast 458 – Dengue Dengue Dengue

Indian Wells ‘Racquets’

Indian Wells will be no stranger to avid readers of XLR8R. The Italian producer first appeared in our downloads section in 2012 with “Deuce,” a cut from his debut album, Night Drops, and has since been a regular fixture on the site—his track “Alcantara” also made it into our top 10 downloads of January last year.

In the four years since the release of Night Drops, Indian Wells has released a sophomore LP, Pause,—which in turn was remixed by Ital Tek, Vaghe Stelle, Pixelord, and Elektro Guzzi—and a remix on Ghostly International. His latest single, “Racquets,” was debuted by Boiler Room back in August and is now being presented as today’s XLR8R download. Like much of his previous work, the track is fitted with a stylish swagger and an irresistible groove. It’s a club-based track, but one with a certain smoothness that makes it perfect for home listening as well.

You can download “Racquets” via WeTransfer” below and keep an eye out for a rumoured third LP.

Douglas Dare Readies New Erased Tapes LP

Douglas Dare will release his sophomore LP via Erased Tapes, entitled Aforger.

The follow-up to Dare’s debut Whelm LP of 2014, Aforger is a “deeply personal and intimate portrait of the artist at his most vulnerable, scarred from the pain of mistrust as well as open honesty,” according to the press release.

Central to Aforger are two major moments in Douglas’ life: coming out to his father for the first time, and learning that his partner was committing adultery behind his back.

Previous single “Doublethink” is a reference to the latter, using George Orwell’s famous 1984 concept to describe the pain, disillusionment, and coercion of learning that your partner has been cheating on you while living a double life. “Oh Father” tells the intimate story of Dare coming out to his father for the first time.

“New York” —the video for which is streamable in full below—is the latest single from the upcoming LP.

Tracklisting

01. Doublethink
02. Greenhouse
03. Oh Father
04. New York
05. The Edge
06. Binary
07. Stranger
08. Venus
09. Thinking Of Him
10. Rex

To learn more about the inner workings of Aforger, here’s an excerpt of Dare from a conversation on July 11, 2016.

The album title plays with the idea of a forger—someone creating imitations or copies, and reimagines them as the creator of something that’s no longer real. Prior to writing the record, I came out to my father and came out of a long relationship, both were hugely challenging for me and questioned my idea of identity and reality. These thoughts leaked out into the record and formed the core of Aforger. I was determined not to write a breakup album or repeat what I’d done before..

I grew up on quite an isolated farm in Dorset, surrounded by fields and not much besides. My mother taught piano from home and we didn’t have a computer, or the internet or mobile phones. In fact, my family still chooses not to use these things. It’s worlds apart from my life now in London where technology seems to dominate everything I do.

After finding out my boyfriend had been leading this double-life, I became obsessed with the question of what is real and George Orwell’s 1984 felt appropriate for me to re-read. Orwell explains this idea of reality control and it struck a chord with me. The idea that truth can be steered or changed, and we might be able to believe two contradictory things at once. In my case, ignorance was my protection from the truth and ignorance really is bliss, until you’re no longer ignorant.

“Binary” talks about the idea that technology is allowing us to live on after we’re gone. A relative of mine whose parent passed away kept a picture of them on their phone as a background image. A friend saw this and asked, “How can you have that there to constantly remind you of your loss?’ They replied, “No I have to, it shows me that they’re still here.” This resonated with me and I thought, ‘”Okay, this is just an image to me but to them it’s more than a reminder or a reassurance, it’s a reality.” At the same time, I was finding myself haunted by the digital reminder of my ex-partner and wishing they would disappear. I had to realise that it’s all just pixels on a screen.

I think New York can be thought of as this fabricated, magical place. I was there with my boyfriend after touring the U.S., but when I came back to London I discovered all these lies and began questioning everything. I even questioned whether New York actually happened or not. “New York” is a song that’s literally describing that very real feeling of not knowing who or what to believe any more—scary and magical at the same time.

Lyrically I wanted to be as honest as possible. The album deals with so much dishonesty, so I felt the lyrics had to be the counterbalance. I was inspired by Björk’s album Vulnicura and how everything is almost awkward in its honesty. Like my first album, Aforger started as poetry, but I consciously tried to be less poetic. For instance, “Oh Father” is an example of complete unambiguity. It’s certainly the most personal song I’ve put out there, and the realisation that people may hear it makes me feel very vulnerable. That’s the most real feeling of all for me right now.

Aforger is scheduled for October 14 via Erased Tapes.

Hear a Track from Barnaby Carter’s Upcoming Album on Project: Mooncircle

Bristol-born multi-instrumentalist Barnaby Carter will release his debut LP, While It Still Blooms, on October 28 via Project: Mooncircle.

In the short time Carter has been on the scene, he has supported the likes of Lapalux and Romare, as well as drawing praise from the likes of BBC Introducing and BBC Radio 3. Carter infuses his music with nostalgic emotion, creating slices of melancholic beauty that are both accessible and inventive and reflect the nature of life itself, as he explains:

“It is a fundamental part of life that in order for something new to emerge, something old has to pass and give up its space and resources. This circulation between life and death is the source of everything beautiful. It is omnipresent in the whole of nature and all cycles of reproduction we know. Life is finite yet cyclical. It’s beautiful. I am inspired by nature, and of the growth within it, albeit temporary. But for me, as I said before, the finiteness of life is part of its beauty. So enjoy the moment.”

The first taste of the forthcoming album arrives in lead single, “Cold Weather Warm Soul.” Filled with shimmering ambience, it’s a lush, pop-infused cut that focuses on atmosphere and intricately program beats to deliver its message.

You can hear the track in full via the player below, with the album available to order here.
