Whether we’re conducting interviews, putting together features, or prepping some other piece of content we here at XLR8R try to keep in mind that many members of our audience come to the site not only for music, but also to learn. Over the past few years, we’ve attempted to build our Gear section into a useful resource for aspiring DJs and beatmakers, but we also realize that it’s not quite enough. No matter how thorough XLR8R attempts to be, there are surely readers out there who are left disappointed when a certain question goes unanswered or a specific piece of information isn’t revealed. In an effort to remedy this situation, we’ve decided to launch a new feature series, Ask the Experts, which will give our audience the chance to pepper a new artist with questions each and every month. And to kick off the new feature, we’ve enlisted the smarts of none other than veteran German duo Modeselektor.

Modeselektor has not only been releasing music for more than a decade, but the Berlin-based duo also heads up the excellent Monkeytown and 50Weapons labels. It’s safe to say that the pair knows a lot about music—and the music industry—so the inaugural edition of Ask the Experts offers an opportunity to ask about production, touring, remixing, traveling, or pretty much any aspect of being an artist. The first installment of Ask the Experts will arrive later this month, and will be followed each and every month thereafter with another round featuring a new artist. Start sending in those questions now.

Just before the weekend launches into full swing, a pair of new mixes have surfaced from Dutch production veteran Gerd (pictured above) and NYC trio Archie Pelago. First, 4Lux label head Gerd—who will soon release a new 12″ under his NY Stomp alias—was tapped for the Defected label’s In Their House mix series, delivering an hour-long mix full of deep and sturdy house tunes. In addition, Archie Pelago has been picked to drop off a set for Pitchfork‘s ongoing mix series highlighting performers at this summer’s MoMA PS1 Warm Up events. With the trio on the bill for this weekend, Archie Pelago has shared an hour-long mix full of the group’s own productions and remixes.

Bristol-based label Don’t Be Afraid has never been shy about showcasing new talent, from Detroit native MGUN to Finnish producer Halvtrak. The imprint’s next release is no exception, as Glasgow duo CEOL will be making its proper debut following an earlier remix for cult outfit Seventh Sign. Comprising Domenic Cappello and Lee Duncan (a.k.a. Leeon), CEOL seems firmly entrenched in Glasgow’s electronic music scene; in addition to his releases on local imprint Soma as Hutton Drive, Cappello also serves as a resident at famed underground institution Sub Club. The duo’s forthcoming 12″ reportedly falls in line with a Glaswegian deep techno tradition, distinguished by “trademark pads and strings, the deep sub-bass, and the strong sense of rhythm.” The Light lands on July 23, but until then, all three tracks on the EP can be streamed in full below.

Back in May, Four Tet (who yesterday announced plans to release an upcoming remix 12″ featuring Jay Daniel, Seven Davis Jr., and PhOtOmachine) and Atlanta MC Rome Fortune shared “One Time For,” a collaborative track produced by the prolific London artist. Now, the pair have returned with “Lights Low,” another collaborative effort which is available to download for free.

Led by a thick synth sequence, Four Tet’s production here is simple but effective, with grainy percussion and bulbous kicks providing the rhythmic structure for Rome Fortune to lay down his relaxed flow. Though no indications have been made as to whether or not Four Tet and Rome Fortune intend to collaborate on a proper release, the second effort to result from their partnership can be streamed and download in full below.

Over the past few years, UK-born, Paris-based producer Doc Daneeka has gradually reinvented himself. While the Ten Thousand Yen label head was once known for crafting bass-heavy, rhythmic club tools, these days he’s turning out melodic, hook-driven house, as seen on his anthemic “Walk On In” single from last year. More recently, his Hi-Five feature for XLR8R and hammering “Treptow” single for Numbers showcased the Welsh beatmaker’s newfound affinity for infectious piano lines, a love which is also evident in his new remix for Manchester-born producer TCTS. In his rework of “Games,” Daneeka shores up the leading vocals of K Stewart with a simple drum-machine rhythm and pop-influenced piano motif. TCTS’ new EP is due out via MTA on August 10, with Daneeka’s remix, which can be heard in full below, included in the package.

Over the past several months, track streams from Anthony Naples‘ second EP for The Trilogy Tapes have been quietly surfacing on SoundCloud along with speculative release dates, starting with “More Problem” (which we posted back in May) and followed by “Perro” and title track “Zipacón” (available here and here, respectively). Today, the final cut from the Brooklyn-turned-West Coast producer’s four-track effort has materialized, along with a fresh release date. “Crazy Spirit,” which is built around a vaguely psychedelic, modulating loop, can be heard in full below, and the Zipacón 12″ will reportedly land on July 20.

Aside from serving as a leading producer and the head of the esteemed Hyperdub label, Steve Goodman (a.k.a. Kode9, pictured above) has also dedicated much of his time to audio research, having served as a lecturer at the University of East London and authored the book Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and The Ecology of Fear in 2009. Now, alongside Toby Heys (a research fellow at Manchester University), Goodman will release Martial Hauntology, an audio research box set which “investigates the properties of newly emergent super-directional speakers when coupled with infrasonic devices.”

Said to be four years in the making, the triple-gatefold package will include a 112-page book, 180g clear vinyl record, and six 12″ x 12″ “Dead Record Archive cards” which together offer “a tortuous, hyperstitional account of frequency-based phenomenon in military and civilian spheres over the preceding 70 years.” Furthermore, the project will find Goodman and Heys operating under the name AUDiNT, which will also serve as the name of the newly launched “sonic research cell” and record label releasing the box set.

A few shots of Martial Hauntology‘s packaging have been included below, while a more in-depth description of the project can be found over on Boomkat, where the box set is now available to purchase. AUDiNT’s ambitious first project is limited to 256 copies and is “never to be re-pressed.”
